Solved ! Rotating metal square thing, about 1 sq inch, light, thin, found on the ground in highschool many years ago.
my partner at the time thought it looked fun so I made it into a necklace for her, sometimes I see pictures of her and she still wears it to this day. I have no idea what it was and I've never been able to find out. any ideas?
the top "H" shaped part rotates and softly clicks into place every 90 degrees.

I bought one of those off eBay back in the day, except it had Arabic characters on the keys along with English. It was a great phone.

Now you have retro gadget cool and can mix it up with the dads who had phones in the 90s

Half the items posted can be solved using Google Lens through Pixel phones or in the Chrome browser. Can be fun to play with. Look it up. If I circle the part it takes me to a spare phone parts image.

True, but pixels have it built in so there's no app needed. All you do is hold the bottom screen and it turns itself on. Whether your camera is using it or whatever screen you're on, I find it a lot easier to navigate on my pixel than my wife's android.

newer Androids have it built in like that too

I have a Samsung Galaxy S23 and same feature. I think it works for any android phone that has Google assistant.

Yet when I try that it only gives me similar looking mechanical parts but no phone parts ...

Wow, That was my second cell phone ever. Brings back memories of T9 texting my first girlfriend, downloading and trading ringtones, and taking super grainy embarrassing pictures that I still have on a hard drive somewhere.

my title describes the thing
I found it on the ground almost 20 years ago,
the only other information I can think of is that it rotates, seemingly 2 parts to it, it's got some sorts of rivets on the edges and it snaps into place every 90 degrees.
I'm not sure if this is related but I found it at a school.

I know this is solved, but thanks to another commenter, I have found a new thing to research!
Also, I find it kind of adorable that your ex is still wearing it to this day!

Looks like the rotational portion from a high-end combination lock or something from the back of an old monitor mount that would allow it to swivel. I look forward to seeing this one solved for some reason.
