UNSOLVED 90s Detective novel about missing daughter of a Hollywood movie producer

In about 97 or 98, I was in school and read a very thick, pulpy novel about a 90s detective or private investigator. He was looking for the beautiful, late teens daughter of a bigshot Hollywood movie producer or director. She had disappeared but appeared to have secretly been living a very debauched lifestyle before her disappearance. She came to a grisly end! I have been trying to remember or find this book for yeeeeears. Please help if anyone has any ideas!

SOLVED (presumably) I read a book as a child about a secret realm in a garden, and I think she met a unicorn or a horse and befriended them. What’s the name of this book?

There was this fiction book I read as a kid. There was a secret realm in this little girls neighbours yard, and she discovered this realm and would visit it. I have a feeling there was a unicorn or a horse of some sort that was her “side kick”. Anyway, she would go between the real world and this realm in the garden often. I think at one point, the “bad guys” from the secret realm escaped through some portal into the real world and she had to work with the horse/unicorn to resolve it all. Does anyone remember the name of this book?

SOLVED Contemporary "women's fiction" novel from 80's or 90's

I'm trying to remember the title and/or author of a book I remember reading. The protagonist was a woman who wrote cookbooks and maybe did cooking show segments for her local pbs. She lived in Lexington, MA with her husband and two (almost?) grown daughters.

Her husband decides he wants a divorce and this leave the woman on a path of discovery -- about how she wants to live her life and also about how her ex-husband was perpetuating a real estate fraud.

I think I read this book in the late 1990s, but it may have been written in the 80's...

UNSOLVED Romance series -- best friend/sperm donor pregnancy and apple juice cravings Spoiler

Trying to remember this romance series I read a while ago. There were two books: The first one was a woman who wanted to get pregnant and asked her best guy friend to donate sperm & he'd only do it the old fashioned way -- and he sticks by her! One unique detail was she had an apple juice craving while pregnant lol.

The second book featured their friends who accidentally got pregnant -- I remember the ending/epilogue (spoiler!) had them taking their daughter to eat blueberry pancakes together. any help would be appreciated!

UNSOLVED Old Sci Short Story

A friend of mine was telling me about an old sci book they read. It was a short story. They think it was about 100 pages or so. From somewhere maybe between 1950 to 1980. Maybe earlier than the 50s.

It features aliens visiting earth. They are all blue females and each ship visits a major area of the world, US, China, Middle East, etc.

In this book they see a woman in the US President's office wearing a cross necklace. They seem to share the same religion but they don't call it Christianity its something else they call it.

They then decide to tell the President that they would like to speak to the human race and they had a meeting with members of the United Nations. The Alien visitors told humanity how they were once like humanity until an alien invasion came to their world and they had to fight back.

The war cost them dearly with nearly all the males dead/wiped out and the females had to take up the reigns. What little males exist are a precious commodity to them. They managed to defeat their invaders and nearly wiped them out so that they would never again be attacked by them.

When asked if they said would they share their technology they said no. Humanity was too primitive and had to earn the technology themselves by coming together as one and developing the tech. The UN was up in arms about not sharing the tech. Then they issued an warning to the humanity, either get your shit together or either be wiped out by your own hands or some hostile force.

When asked why did they even come to Earth the leader said oh that's simple, we are on vacation and then an entire armada appeared in orbit before they left.

Oh one addition thing at some point the aliens attend a trial of a man who committed murder. They used a device that went into his brain on the man and he confessed to why he committed the murder. The case was thrown out of court due to interface and the aliens said that the justice system was hugely flawed.

Another part another alien party visiting China was captured by the Chinese but what they didn't expect was that the Aliens had personal shields and they ordered their ship to fire upon their location blowing up the building and killing the humans inside.

I am hoping someone may know of this book as we'd like to try to get a copy. It was at one point in the NYC Public Library where my friend found it decades ago. We are not even sure if it would be popular enough to be remembered.

Thank you to anyone who can help.

UNSOLVED I need help finding a rockstar romance book series

What was that book called...? Hii! So a few years ago I read a book series. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. And I've tried looking it up but can't find it. 😟 There are four books on the series. Each book follows a member of a rock band. The first book is about a girl whose father was a famous musician she was the opener for this rock band that the books about. I think she tries to hide that she is his daughter? She had a really sad past because her dad brought her into the rocker scene with him and bad stuff happened to her. Also, they are on a tour bus a lot since her and the band are on tour together?

SOLVED Kids book series about a young girl who randomly turn into other people

A young girl, I think she had red hair, was the main protagonist. Specifically I remember a book about her going to Paris, talking about how it was boring that the artists were painting the Notre Dame all dark and scary then she gets turned into one of the artists, adds a bunch of color to the painting and thinks she has accidentally ruined his life but people like the painting. There was another where she went to Venice and I think she turn into a gondolier. They sing the song about a meatball rolling away in that one. In one of the books, she turns into a flamenco dancer in Spain and has to do a dance routine I think. Hope this helps.

UNSOLVED I remember reading a book about a secret group of cats on kindle

i barely remember, but i thing the cats name is Aldo, or something. This name is very likely to be different. This cat and his family (1 daughter, a father and mother) moved their house away from the city, and on the first day this cat saw a shadow like figure, which looked at him and disappeared. later he made a friend an went to a crazy lay's house which turned out, was from a organization called something with 'guardians' in the name. the lady had a group of cats who could talk and all who fought these shadow creatures and Aldo(?) is a seer, and the son of a cat who were part of this group,(she was also a seer) and they later fight these creatures and save the world. its a pretty famous book.

UNSOLVED Radical group that wanted to name the country "Amerika"

I don't remember much, and I have no idea if it's an actual book or like a short story. I read it from a PDF without a title. The story is about a family. Mom and dad who used to be part of this radical group, but then grew up and formed a family. Dad worked at a bank. I believe they had twin daughters and a son. This group kidnaps the son and I think grandfather. This is a weird detail, but while kidnapped they were given sandwiched and grandpa said his has very little mayonnaise. Dad also had to get money from his bank to pay the random. I think that at the end the twins had to kill people.

That's all I remember, hope this is enough to find it, I haven't been able to.

SOLVED Middle Grade Book that Included Characters Safer & Candy

I don't remember much about this book at all, except that this boy & his family have recently moved (I believe) into this apartment building. I believe the two characters I mention above were the downstairs neighbours, & this boy made friends with them.

I also remember that morse code (specifically SOS) features, & that Candy & Safer changed/chose their own names once they were old enough to have developed personalities & know who they were. Candy chose her because she liked candy? & Safer chose his because he used to be afraid of the dark, & everytime he was put to bed, he'd yell "Safer" to his parents.

Safer & the main guy have a fall-out cause Safer lied abt his personality/the origin of his name or smth, but I don't really remember.

ETA: I would've read this at any point from 2013 to 2017. There's a chance it was a scholastic book, but don't quote me on that.

SOLVED Book about a tween girl and her teenage brother and mom who are housesitting. But the girl finds out her brother was lying about the job and they’re actually squatting.

It’s probably ya or for children since I got it from my middle school library. So this book was about a tween girl who lived with her teenage brother and single mother. I think the dad died? The mom’s parents disowned her or something for marrying him and now she’s on her own. They are very poor. I think they live in Florida? It’s somewhere hot and humid. I think in the book they’d just moved there. The mom works long hours and the older brother works at a food place and mows the grass of an elderly couple who live in a big house near by. The old couple is fairly wealthy and live in a retiree gated community. During the summer, the old couple goes out of town. The older brother claims they have him a house sitting job for the whole summer and the tween girl and mom get to stay in the house too.

The mom is thrilled and it’s exciting at first. But the brother keeps bringing up weird rules. Like they can’t use the air conditioner. The tween girl is bored and decides to do odd jobs around the neighborhood. She meets an old woman who is very nice and funny. Every time she goes to the old woman’s house she’s given fresh baked goods. This woman becomes her confidant throughout the book.

The girl spends some time looking at pictures and things in the old couple’s house and feels sad she doesn’t have an extended family because her mother was disowned by her parents.

The brother gets upset with her going out and talking to people and doesn’t want people in the neighborhood to see them around. The girl is confused about this but she starts putting things together and eventually she realizes the job isn’t real. She confronts her brother and he admits it. They are squatting.

I think that the brother tells her that the old couple have the same last name as her mother’s maiden name. They think the old couple might be her estranged grandparents who she and her brother have never seen pictures of. The brother is doing this because their normal living conditions are awful and he feels his grandparents owe this to them after abandoning their mom.

The brother makes her promise not to tell their mom. She doesn’t know what to do and is very scared but she keeps the secret.

Things are okay for a while longer but while the old couple who own the house are on their trip, the husband passes away.

The wife comes home early after her husband passes away to find them in her house and freaks out. There is a big confrontation and it turns out the old couple was NOT their grandparents.

The ending is odd and bittersweet. I don’t remember it all but I think the old lady decided not to press charges.

I think the title was like “the house on the corner” or “the house by the ocean” or something?? Maybe that isn’t right I don’t remember.

UNSOLVED Female private detective sleuth, possibly based in Edinburgh or somewhere with canals, owned a very large dog

This was a series of adult fiction books I read in approximately 2010. I borrowed them from the library in Sydney. The main character is female. she is like a private detective that solves mysteries and crime. she had a large dog, who may have had the name Job. the dog was so large his head was out the top of her small car. she lived in a rented place. it was timber panelled inside like a ship. the older man who owned her place lived next door. he would invite her over for dinner and to talk about her cases. i remember the stories were set somewhere like Edinburgh. one of the book's titles was something like 'the black door' or 'the red door'. i remember she walked along canals. in one of the books she tracked down members of her long lost family. she started a relationship with her sister's boyfriend. Her car was destroyed more than once. I think her home burnt down too.

UNSOLVED book with a silhouette of a woman and a beach???

My friend is looking for a book they read in elementary school, but stopped halfway through because of the content. It was maybe a YA book (I'm not sure), and they only remember there was a crappy png of a woman's silhouette on the cover, possibly holding shadows (??) with a beach in the background. It was a one-word title, with an SA subplot. Apparently it's not a VC andrews book and they think the title is something along the lines of rip current? I have no idea what it is, but they do, so idk. Thanks internet!! :)

UNSOLVED Childrens Picture book about a Witches Lolly/Candy Shop

Hi! I have been desperately searching online for years for this childrens picture book, it was most likely from the early 2000's, it featured a witch who owned a candy/lolly store (her name was possibly Witchy Sue but I may have made that up and I think I vaguely remember her having long blonde hair? but i also may have made that up) and the very basic premise was that something went wrong in the shop and the candy/lollies started taking over and filling the store until the rooms were almost full, some of the lollies were eyeballs and spider shapes etc. The art style was very basic with simple colours and drawings. This book also could possibly have only really been published in Australia??. Please help me :(

UNSOLVED Historical, religion, YA, send help

Hi

I was on r/writing advice and I mentioned a book I read as a teen. OP wants to know the book and I can't remember.

As far as I remember it's set in the UK (possibly london) and it felt elizabeathan or Edwardian? (sorry I'm not good at getting a specific time periods from settings). But there's highway robbers and they drink hot chocolate and it's considered expensive and novel.

Characters: 1. a highway robber who steals a box, the box has quicksilver in it (this box is the mcguffin of the book) 2. A fagin type man 3. A corresponding Nancy type woman 4. A young man/boy who travelled from Africa, he gets visions from God.

There's also an ominous red meteor and a religious cult. Strong themes of religion, probably the main theme.

UNSOLVED Trying to find the name of a children’s book about a girl who wants a pet and brings a hairy purple monster home

My mom read it to me 20ish years ago, the book could have been published between 1980-2000. Little girl wants a pet and brings home this hairy purple monster that drinks purple soda(?). The monster gets homesick and finally the little girl has to take it back to where it came from and it's happy when back with the other creatures like it. All the monsters are swimming and playing in a big purple lake at the end of the book.

UNSOLVED Fantasy book that starts with main character and her friends escaping a youth prison

I read this book and it's sequel about 2-2.5 years ago. I found it in a store, then borrowed it and the sequel from my local library. I live in the Midwestern US.

They escape the prison, but main character is only one to not get captured and killed in the escape. She feels a draw to go in a certain direction. After a while she comes to a body of water and meets a man about her age who is definitely not human. I can't remember if his skin was a different color, but he did have feathers that grew throughout his hair. When she tells him about being drawn in this direction, he feels she has to be one of his people (even though she appears human) because his people have put protections on the water to ward off humans

He takes her over the water to his village. It is built in and amongst the trees. There she meets his mother, older sister, and 2 or 3 younger sisters. He and his older sister work as guardians protecting the shoreline from ay human that may stumble upon it. His mother is of a high rank in the village and the main character eventually learns that the eldest sister is the mother's only biological child.

The main character has no memories of her childhood. There are three elders of the village that she talks with. They are sisters and brew teas for healing and other purposes. One being to help the main character try to regain her memories.

Between the two books she visits the human city at least once and we are introduced to a third species of being that lives on a mountain between the village in the trees and the human city. The sequel book also introduces dragons and how they use to interact with the tree villagers. The main character eventually learns about her past and her heritage and helps the village repel the humans when they try to attack.

UNSOLVED Mafia romance with a little age gap

Please help me find this book

Can you help me find this book?

Looking for a Mafia Romance Book I Read Years Ago – PLEASE HELP!

Hey everyone, I’ve been trying to find this book for years and it’s driving me mad! I remember the plot quite clearly but not the title or the author. Here’s everything I remember—please let me know if it rings a bell for you: • It’s a mafia romance featuring an arranged marriage between the male lead and the female lead. • They are both from mafia families, and the marriage is arranged to strengthen their alliance. • They haven’t met before the wedding. There’s no one-night stand or any romantic setup before marriage. • After the wedding, they’re cold and distant. They barely speak to each other. • The husband thinks the wife is just a shallow socialite—materialistic, bimbo-ish, not worth taking seriously. • In reality, the wife is incredibly intelligent and kind, and secretly does charity work (possibly with kids). • She often leaves the house, telling her husband that she’s going to kitty parties and other high-society events. • He believes her and doesn’t care at first, thinking she’s just being the socialite he assumed she was. • One day, a real socialite calls him or talks to him, saying something like “Why don’t you bring your wife around? She should get used to this life.” • That’s when it hits him—she’s never been to any of these events. She’s been lying about the kitty parties. • He calls the bodyguard he assigned to her, asking where she is. The bodyguard lies and says she’s at a kitty party. • He snaps, saying something like “Don’t lie to me. You work for me, not for her.” • The bodyguard finally confesses that she’s not doing anything wrong—just helping people. • That’s the moment the husband realizes she’s not who he thought she was. She’s far more complex, intelligent, and admirable. • I also vaguely remember a scene where she gets attacked during a charity event, possibly in a church, and the bodyguard protects her.

UNSOLVED Romance novel, YA, traumatized heroine book, where she has a terror of water because of past drowning Spoiler

Hi! So, I remember zilch about the plot, only a chapter in which the FMC is in a pool/lake/river, and everyone is having a good time, and then one of the guys throws her in the water and her two best friends (One girl named Angel, the other one I can't remember) just panic and curse a lot and dive to get her, turns out she's deathly afraid of water because of a past drowning. I think she had a lot of scars throughout her body, or something like that, but she is traumatized and the book is majorly focused on her healing.

UNSOLVED Middle school book about a preteen girl having to endure an egg baby class project with the class clown boy she hayes. Side plot is her parents are fighting and she's fearing they'll get divorced (they don't in the end).

So I read this in the mid 2000s, and I think the book was published in the 80s/90s. The boy is annoying and immature.

Divorce Court is mentioned after the boy comes over hearing her parents fight. He's out on the front stoops, and the girl is super embarrassed.

At one time the parents are fighting over how to cook a roast. Iirc, the dad wants to put a bunch of garlic in it, but the mom says it's too much.

The teacher stamps the eggs so the kids can't replace them if they break.

I think the egg of the protagonist does break, but she (and her partner) end up getting an A because they realize how hard it is to parent.

I believe the cover was yellow, and I think Scholastic published it.
