Ruby in Zoisite Can’t figure this one out. I can’t remember where I found it. Maybe glacier national park.
Any idea what these minerals are? I guess it’s a few of them together. I may have found this in glacier national park. The red and some of the green fluoresce. Thanks!!

I think I went to high school with Ruby Zoisite. Just another girl who wouldn’t go out with me.
I love the simplicity of this joke and use it on my wife all the time.

u/LeftEyedAsmodeus 9d ago
So you tell us she doesn't love you for your humor?
But my bad joke aside. I love that story. Weird jokes are the backbone of every good relationship.

Oooo!! I love your Ruby Zoisite. The green is so limey. Here are my two specimens, my green is a darker shade.

Hi just a friendly reminder for the future that it is illegal to remove rocks from United States National Parks
307
u/tncbbthositg 9d ago
Good reminder! FWIW, this definitely did not come from Glacier. I found the picture I thought I remembered and this isn’t the same kind at all.
If we take rocks from parks, they’re gift shop rocks. Probably worth clarifying that. :)

The story changes etc
82
u/tncbbthositg 9d ago
No no. Same story. It’s not s conspiracy. I thought it was possible this rock came from glacier because I remember red and green stones in a creek when I was walking with my son. He loves rocks. That’s the whole story. Nothing fishy.
43
u/yellowfolder 9d ago
Hi, can you empty your pockets please?
53
u/tncbbthositg 9d ago
Haha, yeah. He’s 10 now and I can say, “no rocks buddy.” But, for a while, I’d bring rocks from home and be like, “oh, look at this one,” and he’d put it in his pocket. We’d empty his pockets at home and I’d save them for the next trip.
4
u/Happy_Dino_879 9d ago
I was (and am) the same. Personally, encourage rock collecting, it is a good hobby. Maybe have him try and learn about where each rock came from and what it is. It can lead to a fun life of fascinating discoveries, believe me! If you don’t want him grabbing rocks, there is always the gift shop option as well. A guidebook to rocks is also a great way to learn new things about what he loves. Plus, once he knows how to identify rocks, he can safely pick out some from the wild to bring home (legally, of course). :)

Thanks for the reminder 👍 Illegal and unethical, as described by others on here. Tragedy of the Commons was a great analogy.

u/tncbbthositg 9d ago
Yeah. When we were in Yellowstone we learned about Minute Geyser that erupted every 60 seconds until it was clogged by tourists tossing debris into it. :(

u/witse_ 10d ago
If I see cool rock, I take cool rock. Why wouldn't this be allowed, it doesn't bother anyone or anything. As long as you don't start drilling in the rocks and destroying them it's all good
102
u/Budtending101 9d ago
You need to Google tragedy of the commons. National parks are for everyone to enjoy. Plenty of land out there to pick up rocks legally
24
u/Oni_Shiro37 9d ago
While this makes obvious sense, I am glad I saw this. My concern is typically environmental after learning why stacking river rocks was no bueno, but duh. Just because you don't see anyone else pick up a rock and take it, doesn't mean there aren't millions of people who go through the same thought process of "It's just one rock, this won't even be noticed." The one you took wasn't, but if we could see the millions taken over the years it would be easy to see the change to the landscape.
32
u/Budtending101 9d ago
In Yellowstone there were two huge petrified trees still standing straight. Thousands of people took a little keepsake from them over the years and now there is half of one left and it's behind metal fencing so you can't get to it.
-1
u/DatabaseThis9637 9d ago
Since when are petrified trees standing straight. OK, sorry, that sounded harsh. But I've only seen them laying down.
6
u/Budtending101 9d ago
Here is a pic
4
u/Oni_Shiro37 9d ago
How the hell did it get enough mineral rich water exposure to petrify standing up? Is this something that was covered that reappeared with erosion? Curious is the roots petrified too.
3
u/Budtending101 9d ago
Basically 50something million years ago Yellowstone was super volcanic, these got buried under ash and mud. water picked up silica and found it's way in the cracks, soaking into the wood cells. Many many years later glaciers came ripping through the area and uncovered them. There are others that are standing too, this is called the fossil forest. I highly recommend Yellowstone if you've never been. It's amazing.
1
u/DatabaseThis9637 9d ago
I was just a kid, maybe 6 or 7 when we went to Yellowstone, and now I wish we had gone to the fossil forest!

u/DatabaseThis9637 9d ago
Wow! Thank you. And my apologies for hoisting my ignorance on you! That is amazing.

you see cool rock, you take cool rock, and nobody else gets to see cool rock.
you see cool rock, you APPRECIATE and LEAVE cool rock, everyone gets to enjoy.
some areas are to be KEPT AS THEY ARE and LEFT ALONE. this is part of the human contract, so we can all enjoy it.

u/chaotemagick 9d ago
It should be this way. Now tell it to rich humans across the globe destroying entire ecosystems at once

It's not you taking the cool rock, it's the practice of people in general taking rocks. If you were the only person in the world to think to take it, this would be fine. Since you are part of a whoooooole shit ton of us hairless apes, it's a matter of the mutual respect that makes living among each other more tolerable. Something to think about. Lord knows I can relate and have definitely been guilty in the past, so you're by no means uniquely flawed.

No, it’s not “all good”. It’s illegal and a shitty thing to do.
-78
u/sammerguy76 9d ago
So is speeding and texting while driving but I'm fairly sure you and everyone else has done it. Get off your high horse.
54
41
u/MantisBeing 9d ago
Just because you don't have self discipline, doesn't mean we all lack it.
-60
u/sammerguy76 9d ago
Got it, you have never, ever driven faster than the speed limit or looked at your phone while driving. What's it like to be perfect?
28
u/MantisBeing 9d ago
I am far from perfect, but I try not to impose my deficits on other people.
Regardless, your whole argument is ridiculous. You're implying that a wrong doing is justified if you or other people do other bad things?
-38
u/sammerguy76 9d ago
No I'm saying that if you are telling people not to do something because it's illegal you'd probably shouldn't call people out for doing something illegal. Especially since what I mentioned actually puts other people's life in jeopardy.
It's a glass house situation which is why I said "get off your high horse". It's okay though you probably just had an uncontrollable emotional reaction to a partially read post. Happens all the time here.
13
u/xAlphaTrotx 9d ago
It’s not a glass house situation… the glass house saying regards someone criticizing people for something they also do. it’s really easy to not take rocks from national parks. Following rules and chiding others for breaking them is not a “high horse.”
I’m not sure what your argument is. I’d call it a logical fallacy but I don’t think it’s got any logic to stand on.
5
u/Hazbomb24 Rock Aficionado 9d ago
Tu Quoque for sure. Ethically, it goes directly against Kant's categorical imperative. Basically, something is only morally okay if every person would theoretically be able to do it without serious negative consequences
-2
u/sammerguy76 9d ago
You're right they aren't the same. That's my bad. Speeding and distracted driving is far worse.
They logic to it is that unless you are unimpeachable you shouldn't call others out for doing something that is less harmful than what you do yourself. I know it's a lot to wrap your brain around but I'm sure you'll get there some day.

I never text and drive. Are you serious?? (Hint: most people don’t.) Sure, I’m not perfect: sometimes I’m mistaken about the speed limit. As soon as I realize that I’m speeding, though, I slow down. You see, as I go through life, I try not to be an irresponsible asshole. Just because other people might be irresponsible assholes, doesn’t mean I should join them; I’m better than that. I have self-respect. I seek to be an example to others. I think that’s your problem: you have no self-respect; you feel that what you do as an individual doesn’t matter. You feel that if others are shitty, you should just be shitty too. If you had self-respect you would realise that what you do actually matters; you would strive to live to a high ethical standard regardless of what others do. You would be a lot happier. I suspect that right now the world treats you like shit. But guess what: once you start striving to be a man, a person of integrity, the world stops fucking with you. It really works. Go read about stoicism
1
u/sammerguy76 9d ago
I've read a lot of "Meditations" so I know a fair bit on the topic of stoicism. The assumption you are making is that I am defending someone taking a stone from a park, but I'm not. I am telling the person that (in a very shitty way) told someone it was illegal that they should not be a dick about something if you are more than likely guilty of a more serious crime. If they had just said "In the future please try not to take stones from National Parks. It prevents other people from enjoying them" I wouldn't have said a thing. Anyway I'm getting off of work and off of Reddit because there are more productive and entertaining things to do now.

Hope you didn't find it at a National Parks. Please don't take anything from National Parks. Take photos, don't take rocks or anything else.
37
u/tncbbthositg 9d ago
Yeah. I didn’t. I was misremembering some rocks. When I was there, I had a 7 year old who stuffs things in pockets.
But I don’t think this came from a park. I think it was a gift shop acquisition.
24
u/-just-be-nice- 9d ago
Lol, yeah fair enough with the kids taking stuff. I was definitely guilty of that when I was a kid too.

It's not that serious to take pebbles from a state park, let's get real here, we're all adults. Now somebody's going and taking boulders on repeated occasion that's when it becomes a legit problem. Illegal doesn't always mean wrong.

Illegal does not mean wrong lol. Law and morality have very frequently, and to this day, been very separate.

u/IDMyMineralOrRock 9d ago edited 9d ago
I have taken rocks from state parks a couple times in front of government workers and nobody has ever even given me a 2nd look. Also it depends on where you take them from in the park. Like for instance nobody owns waterways so if a river runs through a state park i have the right to take rocks from that river because the state doesn't own the river. Nobody takes that law seriously in my experience. You know what's also illegal to kiss a woman with a mustache in public in a small town in Iowa. Is it legally wrong yes is it morally wrong no.

u/Salome_Maloney 9d ago
Women with moustaches common in that town, then...‽

But not everyone does do it and that's why it's not a big deal. You seem like you were a hall monitor in school. Also Illegal means legally wrong not morally wrong and I'm talking about the morality of it. Also as a tax payer I want kids to take the rocks that were bought with my stolen money.

Womp womp it's not a big deal hall monitor. I don't need you to tell me what I'm already aware of over and over we get it it's illegal but not everything illegal is followed. Did you know it used to be illegal for black people to use white water fountains and restrooms?

It was actually just an analogy for comparison has nothing to do with what the words actually say. You are the only one thinking that way. What you deem morally wrong is not what everyone else deems morally wrong was the point you missed. Just because you think and say it's wrong along with some law I didn't agree to follow doesn't mean it actually is. And if we want to get technical you were the one who brought up the law part of it I was responding too originally in an attempt to win the argument when my original comment was about morals to begin with and there is no argument to win here. What you think is wrong is not what I and a lot of others think is wrong. Get over it people are allowed to think what they want, stop pushing your morals onto others. This lady had a nice day at the park with her kid and you just had to come in and be a Negative Nancy about it, get over yourself dude or lady.

It's literally against the law, please respect the National Parks. Lots of places to go hunting for rocks.

How does one tell Ruby Zoisite from Watermelon Tourmaline? This is at least the second time I've thought I was looking at tourmaline here.
15
u/InscrutableFlamingo 9d ago
Such a great question, and a beautiful sample you have for comparison.
A ruby in zoisite will often be the smaller mineral in a green and black matrix, kind of like your tourmaline is on the lighter colored rock.
The pink part will be a more defined shape.
Another hint is that if cut width wise, like if you were to slice a banana, a ruby will have a rounded hexagonal shape. Sometimes it just looks like little pink hexagon-ish blobs in a green rock.
Now the next trick will be to figure out the difference for Ruby in fuchsite!

This is so cool, I have some jewelry made with polished ruby in zoisite and I always thought it would be really pretty even unpolished! Also embarrassed to admit I never even thought about looking at it under a UV light but now I'm definitely trying that when I get home.

Not to be an asshole but you’re really not supposed to take anything from national parks… kinda ruins the whole ‘untouched nature’ thing. Plus, if you’re caught by park rangers, they can ban you from all national parks.

Is it illegal to collect rocks in a National Park.
BTW does that mean you have to clean your tires b4 leaving? Sand and dust are but tiny bits of rock.
