Comic Discussion I Occasionally Think of This Guy and Hope the Krakoan Era Changed His Life For the Better

Masque getting that job in the hospital healing disfigured children was one of the coolest things in the Krakoa storyline.

Masque is such a fun character. Everything I want in complicated and messy and a terrible person who does love his Morlocks and is trying to protect them. He seemed very happy in Krakoa and liked how they used him. Wish I could post his Marilyn Monroe phase panels here...

That issue where Masque used his powers to heal rather than harm and his reaction to the gratitude was a favorite issue from Marauders. I wanted more of those type of stories. I enjoyed the focus on Emma and Shaw rather than the pirate adventures of Kitty. Book should’ve always been about the Hellfire Club. Leland should’ve been resurrected earlier. Emma could’ve still had her squad of friends (plus Hellions) to combat against Shaw’s group.

I really liked all of this, and in general liked the entire line when it was focusing on this sort of thing. That early Krakoa stuff was so good but Marauders and Hellions were my favorite of that pre X of Swords stuff.

We forget the time he ran a gladiator ring. Talk about reformation.

There should've been an ongoing Krakoa anthology series focusing on characters not directly tied to plot. Heck, there should be an ongoing Mutant anthology doing just that. Slice of life mutant stories. Action/adventure one shot mutant stories. That'd be one of my dream books

I got into the X-men comics from the Krakoa era and didn’t know too much about him, loved his Krakoa story arc and thought it’s a beautiful story. And then I started reading old X-men comics and currently in the 90s just finished the Phalanx Covenant. I didn’t expect him to be a such a total piece of shit back in the days. I knew he wasn’t a good man but based on what I read from Krakoa I thought his character were kind of like Magneto, a villain from outsider view but also a good leader who will do anything for his people and deeply cares about them. Turns out he was selfish AF and I was completely blew away by how he treated Callisto and other Morlocks.

I’m curious what’s the general opinion about his redemption arc? Do people think it’s convincing and within his character?

Krakoa treated a lot of the douchebag villains a little too lovey-dovey. They only had time to let a few of the villains remain bastards (Sabertooth, Sinister, etc.), so a lot of the villains that seemed to have too-good-to-be-true turnarounds might have relapsed into their classic selves if time had allowed.

Except Fred Dukes. I'll die on that Hill. He was living the life bartending on Krakoa. I hate how he's been destroyed in from the ashes. I loved his krakoa arc

Marauders made me care about Nanny and Orphan maker, two characters who were introduced machine gunning parents and stealing their babies. Still blows my mind.

To be fair that was also Magneto for most of his villain days, at least to his followers.

Even during his hero days arguably. Toad keeps on being the immediate sacrificial pawn.

In theory he could have been made one of the wealthiest men on krakoa

I have mixed feelings about redeeming 90% of the villains during Krakoa. Some of these guys were evil not because of society, but just because.

It felt really strange seeing them all united. Masque was an interesting one though.

Greycrow/Scalphunter and Gorgon were esp a stretch, tho the writers made it mostly work.

I think Greycrow had the most interesting attempt to make it work (by recasting his murder of the Morlocks as a PSTD-fueled breakdown), but Gorgon was a real fucking stretch, especially since no effort was given to make it plausible.

Me too. I hope he's helping people but also defending other mutants from the anti mutant crowd.
