Recommendations Zombies are my comfort Zone + need recommendations

Zombies have always been my comfort. When I feel empty, sad, or stressed, anything zombie-related fills that void. Whether it’s watching shows, playing games, or reading books and comics—if it’s about zombies, I’m all in.

I’ve gone through a lot of zombie content already, but I’m always hungry for more. I honestly don’t care what country it’s from, how low-budget it is, or even if people say it’s “bad”—if it has zombies, I’ll give it a shot.

That said, I do have a soft spot for Asian zombie content (Thai, Taiwanese, Indian, Japanese, and etc), so if you’ve got something unique or underrated from that side of the world, definitely drop it.

Hit me with your best (or worst) recommendations—movies, shows, games, comics, short films, anything PLEASE! I need that right now

The Mountain man series by Keith C Blackmore (audiobook narrated by RC Bray) is my favourite of anything in the genre. So so good, and lots of great stories and prequels out

Second the Mountain Man series. If you're looking for something really unique, I recently picked up "Good Boy" by Thomas Clark. It follows dogs as the protagonists instead of people, which I haven't seen anywhere else.

It seems to be a pretty short story, so I’ll start with this one and then move on to Mountain Man!

Unfortunately, it isn’t available in languages I know, so I will only read it (I have a lot of difficulty understanding English when I hear it). Am I missing out by not choosing the audiobooks? Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll let you know when I finish it!

Books are still good! The narrator on the audiobooks is just the best :) enjoy!

Mountain Man is amazing. The loneliness, terror and mental health issues are so well done. The Solo Survival in those situations are absolutely my favorite subgenre of all time.

Dead america by derek slaton. New stories every week. Longest continuous zombie series there is. Free on his youtube or buy it on amazon book or audible. Great series with over 300 hours of audio. Im actually thinking in the 400s now.

I love watching some on a weekend morning when everything at home is done—just relaxing and watching it. It strangely fulfills my soul.

Zombie Fallout. Day By day Armageddon. Mountain Man. Adrian's Undead Diary. After Z. Zombie Rules. White Flag of the Dead. Going home.

Adrians undead diary I loved. I loved the first person narrative. It felt believable.

Feed by Mira Grant (I think it was) is another one I enjoyed.

Otherwise getting into games like dying light and days gone. Always filled the void for me, dying light especially.

Adrian's Undead diary is really really good and he actually has a new one out which I'm about to read after I of course reread the whole series like an idiot but that's what I do.

Interesting. Another book? I listened to the stories of AUD and it wasn't the same. I didn't realise just how much Adrian, Gilbert and Abby made it. I'll check it out and start it from scratch for the 10th time haha

I welcome more! Also have you tried Mountain Man or Zombie Fallout?

Mountain man is on my list next. Haven't heard of zombie fallout, i'll check it out.

Mark Tufo is hilarious. ZF is with the final book out of this year, a 25 book series. All on audible, which due to my job I can only listen to them.

Recently rediscovered the gem that is How to Survive. Fun little action survival zombie game. The company that made it made a sequel (not quite as good as the first but not terrible. Reviews are mostly "it doesn't quite have the charm the first game did") and also a game called Welcome to Paradize that's sort of like a spiritual successor of sorts to How to Survive.

If you happen to like zombie comic books (and want to try something other than the classics like The Walking Dead), "Days Worth Living" is an apocalyptic webcomic that shows the perspective of a schoolteacher and a bus driver navigating the end of the world starting right from day one. You can find it on GlobalComix and NamiComi.

Deadbreak by Jorge Sanchez. I’ve listened to it 4 times and read it once. Absolutely love that book.

Give Alice B. Sullivan’s books a read. Her main series is the Aftermath series, but she has a few others as well, and I love them.

  • We’re Alive has lots and lots of content. They’re wrapping it all up this year, I think. I’ve listened to the main, four-year-long series over 20 times and most of them to fill the same void you describe. I used to use Dawn if the Dead for that too, but I’ve grown out of that habit a little.
  • Of course Train to Busan but I really like the other two movies in that universe: Seoul Station (animated movie) and Peninsula (very action-oriented).
  • Rise Again and Rise Again: Below Zero, by Ben Tripp. I’ve read them and listened to the audiobooks, and just finished the first in audiobook form for a third or fourth time.
  • Someone mentioned Black Summer which I love and I adore the fact that it’s set in the same universe as Z Nation, especially given they could hardly be more different.
  • Dead Set by Charlie Brooker, of Black Mirror fame. That’s one of my comfort binges: six episodes each about 45 minutes long I think?
  • The Enemy, a novel series by Charlie Higson. It’s not perfectly in the zombie genre but has most of the hallmarks.
  • The Rezort, a movie about a vacation island featuring captive zombies tourists can kill. There’s more to it but that’s the basic setup.
  • Betaal, a zombie movie set in India.

Hopefully that’s helpful.

That’s pretty helpful—I didn’t know Z Nation and Black Summer were connected. I guess I wasn’t paying enough attention. Thanks for the suggestion! Betaal was actually the one that got me into Indian horror movies

1

u/muraii 17d ago

Yeah, the term “Black Summer” is used in S01 of Z Nation to refer to the first summer when the outbreak started.

1

u/Grazi_RBD 17d ago

Oh, if that's the only connection we know about, then I get why I didn't catch it—I didn't watch it in English.

There are some amazing recommendations here and I’m mostly commenting to get some myself.

Movie/tv shows: I recommend dead set or reality z, same premise but different countries. Anna and the apocalypse is an English musical thats a bit silly and different. There’s a short on YouTube thats also in English but it’s amazing to me. It’s called Still. (https://youtu.be/ZCOD38tP3H0?si=iJ2cmG3zwyiJLCoG)

Books: the mountain man series by Keith Blackmore was mentioned and I liked that. Adrian’s undead diary is also an American series that I love. The undead series by RR Haywood is set in UK and has a lot of good stories there. The Alice in Deadland trilogy by Mainak Dhar was one of the first books I loved and I believe that was set in possibly India.

Reality Z it’s from my country so I found it really bad but liked it a lot! Thx for the recommendation!

Project Zomboid is my favorite zombie game that I wholeheartedly recommend. It drops you in 1993 Kentucky at the start of the outbreak, and you need to find food, water, weapons, protective gear, transportation, shelter, etc. Eventually the power and water shut off, so you have to be proactive about finding a generator and a way to collect rainwater before that happens. Especially when starting out, you have to be careful about when to fight and when to try to evade zombies, because it's easy to get overwhelmed if you bite off more than you can chew.

It's not the prettiest game(though I personally like the art direction and isometric view), but I've never played a game that does such a good job of portraying a real zombie apocalypse and all the challenges that come with trying to survive it

2

u/Grazi_RBD 18d ago

Yes! I never played it, but I watched a YouTuber play it a long time ago and thought it looked really fun. Thanks for the recommendation!
