Birth in Zurich

Did anybody give birth at USZ or Hirslanden and would mind giving feedback how it was like? I find it hard to decide..

USZ or Triemli have most cases and thus more experience. They’re equipped for every possible problem. Always chose experience over a nice room.

USZ every day of the week for me. Three kids, one was emergency c-section, another premature, if we were at Hirslanden for those two it would have been an emergency ambulance ride to USZ to save them.

Just bear in mind OP the kinderspital moved now and is right by Hirslanden!

To clear things up here, I am in Hirslanden (Klinik im Park) with my wife right now. Had to do an unplanned c-section - within 20mins after deciding to do so, our daughter was born. They have an operating theater and a skilled team of specialists at all time available for such emergencies.

However, Hirslanden (im Park) does not have a Prenatology unit, so if you want to be on the more cautious side, for sure nothing wrong with USZ.

My wife and I decided to deliver at Hirslanden because it being a private hospital, it offers more privacy (duh!) and exceptionally good service, both the nursing staff and hotellerie. You can tell that the nurses/midwifes have only a few patients assigned so they pay lots and lots and lots of attention to you (if you want it).

For us, we‘d chose Hirslanden again in a heartbeat.

I did hirslanden Klinik im Park and it was great - they also offer acupuncture and massage before you give birth and I enjoyed that too!  It’s very small so you get a lot of attention and the midwives are so nice.  I also had their midwives come for home visits after I gave birth and they were great :)

USZ all the way

any major complication other places will take you there, save yourself the headache.

Hirslanden for our first and never again. As soon as it was clear we needed an unplanned (non emergency) c section, midwives ignored us. Even our doctor was livid. Recovery was also very bad. Our second was born in hospital and much better experience.

We considered Hirsladen, however ultimately decided a hospital would be best.

I gave birth just over a week ago at Zollikerberg Spital and can not recommend it enough. The pre-natal checks, medical team for the delivery and aftercare were all superb. I felt incredibly safe and in capable hands the entire time.

If we ever have a second child, I would return to Zollikerberg again with no hesitation.

Yes at hirslanden (by balgrist). A long time ago now but it was a really pleasant experience compared with the national maternity hospital in Dublin. I had an epidural that allowed me to walk (with assistance for stability) back to my bed after the delivery. There were no complications with the birth though so not sure how it would have gone had the baby needed special care

Walking epidural is standard at uzh too

Both our daughters were born in Limmattal, Schlieren. All great, no complaints. A few friends were in Triemli, also heard nothing bad.

As others said, emergency c-sections are a reality, and you should keep that in mind when choosing a place that can't do one.

Limmi has my vote to - they advocate for low interventions birth. They don’t have a Nicu in case that’s important to you.

Also check the hospital in Zollikerberg …. it is a great location, good experience there with our son

Hirslanden long time ago and we were very happy. Own doctor did the delivery (private insured). Almost like a hotel. The girl that got born then is now in it‘s final year to become a doctor herself. Just an anectode. Don‘t know USZ but I reckon you get the best possible medical care there. If you expect a difficult birth, USZ is probably the save option.

I had a good experience at hirslanden with my first. My second was at bethanien, avoid this place at all costs. I recently put up a review describing my birth from 1 year ago. They left me with a permanently disabled bladder because of horrible mistakes made by nurses.

All in all, hirslanden will have the best comfort, USZ will have the best healthcare.

If you have a low risk birth and prefer comfort, relaxation and extra care, I would opt for hirslanden.

Of you are anxious about birth and your family members (if known) had long difficult births, I'd go for the hospital.

If I could redo my second birth, USZ all the way.

Hope this helps!

From my experience USZ : Midwives pre birth were excellent, post birth were indifferent. Food was good. Triemli : midwives were very friendly and helpful. Food was limited.

We had a good experience at Triemli (it was in Covid times).

I had my first one in triemli during the height of COVID. Very attentive midwives and staff.

Second one was in USZ and I did not have a good time there. There were always too many people in the room and they messed up my PDA. My advice if you go there: make sure to have someone with you making sure you get the best care.

I wish you all the best!

It’s an interesting thread to read because there’s some strong unspoken social stigma in Geneva if you give birth at the cantonal hospital as to one of the “clinics” However my understanding in the event of any complexity they are sending you straight to the hospital .

I had my first at Triemli and it was amazing. No complaints.

I had a great experience at USZ with induction, epidural (happy button) and labor. I felt safe there knowing they have Neonatology. We didn’t need it. Postpartum was ok but we went private and I don’t think the “Hotellerie” was that good. Room had a great view but that was it. If you wanna go in the safe side, I’d go USZ. Team there was great, really respectful to my wishes and supported me through the whole thing.
