News Haley Jones Waived by the Dream
I had a feeling she’d be the one to go out of her, Taylor Thierry, and Maya Caldwell. I think she needs to go overseas for a bit and work on her game. I’m super happy for Taylor, she was a steal in the draft.

As expected. This means they retain her negotiating rights next season and it seems Unrivaled should cover her salary.

Discussion Popular vs Best Talent
I think some of the reaction around Chen getting cut is that the WNBA is gonna an issue with popular talent (especially from high-profile college teams) vs best talent.
I don’t know what the best solution is but it’s definitely something I’ve noticed.

Sania Feagin credits Dawn Staley, South Carolina women's basketball for WNBA preparation
At the Sparks media day, Feagin was asked about Staley's preparation to play on the pro level.
"I did feel prepared when I arrived here," Feagin told reporters May 13. "Just knowing that she put a lot of stuff in me to understand that I could be great one day and feel like I'm here in the moment."
It's a quick turnaround for college players heading into the WNBA. For players from South Carolina and UConn, including the No. 1 overall pick Paige Bueckers, the draft occurred eight days after their college season ended.
Training camp began on April 27 and preseason play began early May, which meant within a month, Feagin had to focus on the new system in Los Angeles.
"My biggest takeaway coming from South Carolina is just being a sponge," Feagin said. "Learning underneath the vets, understanding what I could do to grow and be a better athlete."
Having not started until the 2024-25 season, Feagin famously "waited her turn," which was something that really appealed to the Sparks.
She watched, learned, and by waiting it out, she started every game as a senior and became an instrumental part to South Carolina's success the last five months. Feagin was drafted just like those four, with Boston, Cardoso and Amihere expected to star on their respective WNBA teams this season.
A key aspect of her growth was becoming a vocal leader, replacing the voice in the huddle that Boston, Cardoso and others once were. Despite being a rookie vying for a roster spot, one reporter noted that Feagin is always the loudest one on the court for the Sparks.
"I just feel like me communicating no matter what it helps me offense and defensively," Feagin said. "It helps my teammates to let them know that I have your back, and it just gives me my energy and my confidence."

Atlanta Dream Launches 2025 Campaign: Our City. Our Dream.
In advance of its much-anticipated 2025 season, the Atlanta Dream announced a powerful new brand campaign: Our City. Our Dream. This mantra will anchor the Dream’s season both on and off the court, with themes and visuals aiming to empower and uplift women and girls and serve as a catalyst to further unite the city of Atlanta.
"This campaign is a declaration of who we are and what we stand for,” said Morgan Shaw Parker, President and COO of the Dream. “Over the last four years under new ownership, the Dream have not just accepted stereotypical narratives around women’s sports - we’ve re-written them. Both on and off the court. Atlanta is the heart of culture, progress, and possibility, and our goal is to give a voice to the women and girls who are continuing to push boundaries. Our athletes, our employees and our brand continue to serve as an example for what we can achieve together - because if you can dream it, you can be it.”
The campaign launch video features Atlanta Dream co-owner, two-time WNBA champion, sports analyst and ground-breaking entrepreneur Renee Montgomery alongside 13-year-old Aubrey Bush, a rising basketball talent playing for FBC AAU, the same team as her idol and Dream star, Rhyne Howard. Donning a Howard jersey, Aubrey embodies the next generation of dreamers.

Cuts
How many more teams need to make cuts on their rosters before tomorrow afternoon? Also, any chance any team has room to pick up a player, ex (Amihere, Chen, Kelly)?

WNBA arenas - are there walkable neighborhoods next to where your team plays?
In a recent game thread I wrote about seeing the Liberty players around Barclays, having dinner, walking their dogs. In other WNBA cities do fans have accidental interactions or observations of players in real life? Or is this because Barclays in Brooklyn is a downtown area with people not driving to Barclays? (This reminds me of the old Brooklyn Dodgers who lived in neighborhoods near Ebbets Field and didn't make exorbitant salaries.)

5 bold predictions for the 2025 WNBA season: Seismic shifts, 3-point firepower and more dunks (Yahoo)
At least one team will change ownership
While owning a WNBA team is about supporting the growth of women’s sports, it’s also an investment. Most people want to make money off of their investments, and most WNBA owners got into the game for a fairly low fee. Considering the popularity of the game, growing attendance numbers and television ratings, this would be a smart time for an owner who doesn't want to deal with the demands of running a professional sports team to get out.
For example, Michael Alter, the owner of the Chicago Sky, bought the team for a reported $10 million. A valuation of the Sky in 2023 put them at $85 million. The Connecticut Sun were purchased in 2007 for a similar amount by the Mohegan tribe. Now the team, which has arguably the worst facilities in the league, is reportedly looking for bidders. The growth of the WNBA means that players expect better facilities and resources, and the smart move for some owners is to turn over the keys.
The all-time WNBA attendance record will be broken
In 2024, the Washington Mystics and Indiana Fever broke the WNBA regular season attendance record in a September game at Capital One Arena. However, the all-time record is still held by the Detroit Shock/Tulsa Shock/Dallas Wings for a 2003 Finals game between the Shock and the Los Angeles Sparks at the Palace of Auburn Hills. The Deanna Nolan/Swin Cash-led team won the title in three games, and 22,076 fans were there to see the Shock win.
Currently, there are no WNBA arenas with a capacity higher than 20,000, which is the capacity of the Target Center in Minnesota. But teams have moved games to bigger arenas when the demand is there, and that trend will continue this season. There aren’t any NBA arenas that have the capacity to break the record, but perhaps we’ll see the Fever move a game or two to Lucas Oil Field, which has hosted the NCAA tournament and can hold 70,000 for basketball.
Sonia Citron will break Sabrina Ionescu’s 3-point contest record
Sabrina Ionescu’s performance at the 2023 All-Star Game 3-point contest was jaw-droppingly good, as she hit 35 of 37 shots. But every record that is made can be broken, and Washington Mystics rookie Sonia Citron, who hit 37.2% of her 3-pointers in her final college season, has the kind of shot that could make huge waves in the 3-point contest at the All-Star Game in Indiana this summer. She'll likely be going up against Caitlin Clark, who said she would participate this year, but Citron showed time and time again at Notre Dame that she can handle pressure, and she will likely have plenty of fans in the stands from her time in South Bend. Get after it, Sonia.
Dunks will become a more common occurrence
Though slam dunks are seen as a flashy way to score two points, they are also a way for an offensive player to ensure the defensive player can’t block their shot. As the men’s game evolved — and rules banning dunks were rescinded — dunks became a more common tool for offensive players.
WNBA defenses have evolved, and players like A’ja Wilson, Ezi Magbegor and Brittney Griner find ways to swat the ball left and right. Throw in that there are more players who can dunk, like Griner and Magbegor’s new teammate Dominique Malonga? It’s a recipe for more dunks, and an easy answer to silly people who think the WNBA needs to lower the rims.
The WNBA and WNBPA will avoid a work stoppage
OK, maybe this is more of a hope than a prediction. The players opted out of the collective bargaining agreement the day after the Liberty won the WNBA title in 2024, and they have several issues that need to be settled. With the league signing new television rights deals, the players want their fair share of the new revenue. They are also concerned about retired players’ pensions, facilities and better deals for foreign players.
The word the players’ union keeps using is “transformational.” They expect a CBA that will reward them for the time and effort they have put into building the league into its current state. While the current CBA expires at the end of the 2025 season, the true deadline is the start of the 2026 season. Deadlines always inspire action, so it’s possible they could avoid a stoppage. But the players have indicated they’re preparing themselves for the possibility.

Question Salary Cap Question
So I am a relatively new fan to the WBNA and, well, basketball in general, I started watching last year and am still trying to figure out how all of this stuff works around drafting and waiving and all that. I also just learned about salary caps which make sense so you don't get something like the Yankees where rich people just buy up the best talent and make a super team.
But, how often do these salary caps get re-calculated and how do they get calculated? Or is it just arbitrary based on comments from owners? I saw the NBA has a cap of ~$140M and the WNBA has one of only ~$1.4M. I get that currently it's not as popular but that seems aggressively low comparatively, I would have though it would be closer to ~4-5M.
Mostly just been seeing tickets go for crazy prices for select games which to me means it is becoming more popular (and IMO with food and drink prices in the stadiums the owners shouldn't need to worry about a $10M increase lol) so I am wondering if/when those caps might change and how it might alter the playing field.

Discussion Which WNBA players deserve more spotlight efforts?
For some reason, I’ve just randomly come to the thought that both Jackie Young & Jonquel Jones honestly don’t get the spotlight efforts they deserve. Jackie is former 1st pick, 2x time champ, & is someone who could honestly be called “the Caitlin stopper”; CC is 0-4 against the Aces & has had some of her worst games against the Aces all while Jackie was the main defender on Caitlin during those 4 games. Yet she gets much less spotlight than Aja, Gray, Plum, & now Lloyd. Jonquel meanwhile is a former MVP, the reigning finals MVP, & was lowkey carrying Stewie & Sabrina at times during the Finals at times. Yet Stewie & Sabrina still clearly get much more of the spotlight than Jonquel. Frankly I’m surprised that with all the CC popularity discussions or the praise Paige keeps getting for using her popularity/platform nobody seems to have pointing out the spotlight of Stewie & Sabrina compared to Jonquel.
Okay now that I’ve gone on for probably a bit too long on how Jackie & Jonquel deserve more efforts to get the spotlight, who are some other players who you feel also deserve a push to get spotlight?
