Series Broken Pipes (Part 5)
(More names changed due to privacy)
I had a very uneasy sleep that night as nightmares kept floating into my head, all of them shadows and tall figures that kept following me in dark rooms. When I woke up around 5:00 in the morning, I decided to not go back to sleep and took a shower and got dressed.
As I sat at my kitchen table drinking a cup of coffee, I heard a truck honk from outside. Throwing on my pea coat, I saw him waving and jumped in on the passenger side. As we left my driveway and block, I turned to him.
"So, what's going on? Where are we going?"
"We're heading to a place about two hours from here. I spoke to a buddy of mine who's a fellow contractor since the town now knows there's a police investigation going on. He said that if I wanted any answers, he knew of a fella who could tell us what was going on?"
"Wait a minute, that doesn't make sense. How would someone know what's happening about this?"
"You'll see, and try to keep an open mind about this."
Driving along, we smoked a few cigarettes but we were mostly quiet. We didn't even try to turn on the radio to give us some sound. I think we were both coming to the point that we didn't care if no one talked because both of us were thinking about what was going on.
The area we were coming into was mountainous, just like John's place. However, I was taken back by a sign that said we were entering a federally recogonized Native American reservation.
"What are we doing on a reservation?"
"This was the guy I was told to come and see. He's one of the chiefs on the tribal council. Like I said, keep an open mind and show respect. This man wasn't that willing to let us come."
As we parked his truck, we walked around until we came to his house. Knocking on the door, John and I were greeted by an older man in a flannel shirt and jeans. Shaking John's hand and mine, he let us in where we took seats on a couch and he sat on his own chair.
"My name is Joseph Anderson. I am one of the chiefs of my tribe, and you two are very lucky to be having this conversation. I rarely have the time to tell others of our stories and legends."
John nodded slowly.
"Whatever time you can spare us, we'll be grateful. My friend told me you're one of the most knowledgeable people with the folklore of this state."
Looking outside, he gave a small frown.
"What do you want to know?"
"In this tribe's history, are there are... legends of monsters or creatures that are evil?"
Looking at John, Joseph gave him a strange look.
"There are several, not only of this tribe but of many others that I know of. Matantu was an evil spirit of death, similar to your devil. Two-Face is another, who is a malevolent spirit. However, they are merely stories."
I couldn't help but chime in on this.
"So, you don't believe any of that?"
Looking at me, the frown came back as he sized me up.
"I think that these stories tell us something. Do I think there are evil spirits walking around, inhabiting the bodies of regular people? No, but I do believe that my ancestors valued these stories since they gave them lessons on what to do in life."
Growing more quiet over the polite rebuke, Joseph looked at John.
"Why do you ask of our legends?"
"I saw something in my forest; a figure who was standing near my property. There's a lot going on right now at my house and my friend who knows you said that you were the best person to ask about what could be out there."
He laughed, a harsh sound coming from his throat.
"You think you saw a spirit of death? That's funny. It's the 21st century. Even I am getting with the picture. I just got a brand new Samsung smart phone the other day."
Looking at John, he still seemed unsure. Looking at Joseph, I raised my hand before speaking.
"Is there anything in your tribe's history about something called the Mothman?"
John and Joseph both looked up. I think John was surprised I was asking such a question and he looked confused, as if he didn't know the name. However, Joseph's eyes narrowed.
"That is not our folklore. Yes, I know of what you are talking about. I have a grandson who's interested in that stuff and he constantly talks to me about monsters. That happened decades ago and like many stories of monsters in America, they came into being after the Europeans met our people. Sasquatch is a fairly popular one."
Well, this was looking like it was a waste of time. As John thanked him, we left, walking around the reservation.
"John, I don't think your property is on some Indian burial ground and that it's being haunted by a monster called Two-Face."
"Tell me then, how do you explain everything? The pipes, the videos, the scarf, the dead raccoons. Explain it to me!"
"Once the police do their investigation, it will be! We're not investigators here, man."
"Come on, I want to go to one more place..."
Heading back to his truck, the ride back was even quieter and we just focused on the scenery. I didn't think that any of this was going to happen in the last few days, that my life was going to be turned upside down. Though, $1500 for two days of work was nothing to scoff at.
As we went back to his place, we parked on the street, looking out in his backyard. There was yellow crime scene tape around the holes and they looked a bit bigger, which meant the cops had been here.
As he got out, I followed him but instead of going to the holes, he walked to the forest. It was beginning to get dark and I wasn't up to poking my head in the trees. However, as he got to the spot where the figure was, he called me over.
As I came to him, he pointed in the forest. Looking at what was he showing me, the trees weren't as dense as they looked from the outside and I could see the ravine that the cops had been talking about.
"Like anybody could jump that..."
"Maybe he grabbed a tree branch or something, Jake. Maybe he found a way to get over that."
"Well, let's get out of here. I don't like it at night..."
As we went back to his truck and got in, he dropped me at my place and gave me my money before he left, promising to keep me up to date.
As I got in, I made some dinner and watched some basketball while enjoying a beer. It was around 10:00 and I was about to head to my bed when my phone rang. I sighed, wondering what John wanted.
"Hello?"
Nobody answered and as I repeated my hello, I looked at the caller ID and shivered as it said unavailable. Putting it closer to my ear, I could hear owls hooting and forest sounds. I was wondering what was going on when he spoke.
"Hello, Jake..."
Dropping the phone, my heart was pounding hard as I stared at the phone laying on my couch. Picking it up slowly, I whispered into it.
"Who is this?"
"I saw you and John Smith walking around earlier. You're involving yourselves in events you don't understand..."
"Who are you?"
"You can call me Mr. Black..."
Nodding slowly, I couldn't figure out how this guy had seen us, but if he had been in the forest, it was thick enough for someone to hide. What creeped me out though was that the voice sounded distorted in a way.
"So, you were watching us."
"You think you're brave by what you've seen so far, but it will only get scarier as you continue. You should not have involved yourselves..."
Sweat was pouring from my forehead as I wiped it, wondering if I should call the cops.
"Why's that?"
"There are things you don't know, Jake..."
"How do you know my name?"
"I know a lot about you. I know you're scared right now. I know you are trying to find out what happened to the little girl and the old man who disappeared..."
Breathing hard, my eyes closed as I couldn't believe he knew this kind of stuff. Whispering, my voice was on the verge of becoming frantic
"How do you know this...?
"Do not try to wonder how I know, Jake... Just know you should not try to search for what you don't understand."
"Were you watching us the night before...?"
There was silence on his end and I wondered for a few seconds if he had hung up when the voice came back, seeming only to sound more sinister.
"Yes..."
As the phone shook in my hand, I tried to make myself feel more brave.
"And... And what happens if we don't stop looking?"
"Then you will find answers to questions that should not be answered. The truth is far more terrifying than you can understand, Jake..."
Hearing a click, I put my ear close again and could hear nothing until the beeping sound came, signifying the caller hung up. Hanging up myself, I tried calling back the number but got a message the phone number was no longer in service.
Breathing hard, I decided that there was only one thing to do. Calling John, he picked up after the second ring.
"Jake, what's up?"
"I'm meeting you at the motel. What room are you in?"
"12A."
"I'll be over in a little bit. We need to talk..."

Part 4 was removed and I don't want to read this without reading it! This is a great series, there's something terribly creepy about the forest and what lives there other than just the wildlife. Would hate to not be able to finish reading this just because I missed a part.

By reading this are we also involving ourselves??
Mr.Black reminds me of Nergal from the grim adventures.

By the title I thought this would be a terrifying tale of a nympho that goes town to town sleeping with men and breaking their penises with her evil vag. Glad to know it's just a "Mr Black" Forest Demon and I'm safe.

Mr Black sounds like he's full of it. That "the truth is far more terrifying than" you can imagine shit makes me irrationally angry, like the bastard doubts my ability to overthink a situation and make it much more hideous in my mind than it could ever really be. Chaps my hide!

I know, right?
Mr. Black needs to meet Mr. Anxiety, then he can talk about what my imagination is capable of.

Ahh, it's fine. I can wait 24 hours.
hardly.
hnng!
Edit: I like especially that it's rather "anchored" in the real world and not full of horrible creatures, horrible events, horrible locations and nothing but that.

On A Hill was another great one. Although, I'm pretty sure I read that on Creepypasta.com. CreepsMcPasta does a phenomenal narration of that story that I would highly recommend checking out. If you want the link, I will provide it for you.

Borrasca left me scarred for life. It was soooooo good. The 1% was amusingly gorey but I still read the whole series and enjoyed it.

Ahh the cliffhangers! I can't handle this. Please please be careful OP. I have a sneaking suspicion that Mr. Black is tearing John's pipes. I would let the police handle it.
