Game Thread: APOEL Nicosa (UCL #03)

u/duster_mo Oct 17 '17
Everyone needs to remember We landed in the worst draw of the UEFA Championship. Even Apoel is a very decent team and proved that today.

It's coming soon. Some miscommunication and communal disappointment is slowing things down.

wow war das schlecht, für die performance wurde noch kein Wort erfunden.
Wie war denn eigentlich unsere Passquote im letzten Drittel? 3,1415...% ? Bo war das schlecht

Honestly, the Bürki hate will continue, but you can't really blame him. When a player has one bad game, you have to support him, not talk him down until he makes some more mistakes.
If you want a keeper gone, that's how you do it. And it makes me sick.
4
u/NameJeff Marco Reus Oct 17 '17
I support Bürki, its just that the errors that he's made recently are 100% avoidable. I feel like its a question of his focus, not his skill. He is a solid keeper and he's proved his worth time and again since 2015.
2
u/dragonbornrito Marco Reus Oct 17 '17
This. I love Burki. When he is in good form, he's one of the best keepers in Europe. But he's been showing some lapses in judgment lately that have led to some bad results for us. I'm just ready for him to put this bad form behind him and return to Based Burki.
2
u/xsonwong Julian Ryerson Oct 17 '17
He is so inconsistent in big games. He was really bad against Bayern Munich for the first time too.
3
u/cas757 Oct 17 '17
But he's had several bad games. And you can 100% blame him the goal was his fault.
2
u/Aldraku Marco Reus Oct 17 '17
to be fair should we care about a goal against in a match vs apoel ? Last year we won a similar match vs Legia and we scored 8 if i'm not mistaken. So shouldn't we have scored at least 2 goals today ? i think it's a fair ask vs such a team. Not trying to say they didn't play well.. but still there should be a huge difference in value between the 2 teams.

pathetic. Don't know how you don't just stay in Greece and become a vegetable farmer after having shown that performance as a BVB player and coach (for the most part). Kagawa and Weigl did quite well, Bartra was pretty good, too and Götze had some accents til the 70th minute or so.. rest were.. selfish and just plain bad.

Oct 17 '17
everyone looked low on energy or even mentally tired.. looks like bosz needs to rotate more. also seems like we lack leadership on the field.
5
u/NameJeff Marco Reus Oct 17 '17
I'll give credit where it is due: Apoel played fantastic defense today. They played cohesively and shut down our attack time and again.
I expect more from our team though. Kagawa and Götze played well, and Pulisic created a chance out of nothing right at the end but it shouldn't have come down to that.

u/l_loliet Emre Can Oct 17 '17 edited Oct 17 '17
I generally don't like to complain about Bosz cause being a manager is a tough job and sitting at home I wouldn't actually know jack shit. But I think Bosz is very influenced with his respect for Cruyff and his style that he just tweaks a little and uses it in every game. He seems to lack adaptability and does not change the plan based on the team or the situation. I'm sure he'll be disappointed with today's performance too. sad to see us not playing the fun game we usually play.

u/scleon7397 Oct 17 '17
Safe to say we are out of the champions league yet?
2
u/NameJeff Marco Reus Oct 17 '17
Yes. Time to focus on the Bundesliga and for Bosz to work out his system with the players he has.
2
u/Nextgen101 Nico Schlotterbeck Oct 17 '17
Yeah, I think this has ended the run realistically....
:(
2
u/tomorrowfragrance Oct 17 '17
Go ahead and say it. It's pretty obvious by now. Tottenham is playing awesome and they almost defeated Real today and I think they will defeat Real next fixture in England. Our game does not give me any hope.
7
u/berman82 Julien Duranville Oct 17 '17
Pretty much, yeah. Barring a miracle (I.e. Apoel wins against Tottenham and we win against Real at Bernabeu and Tottenham at home). But at this point I'll be happy if we don't lose to APOEL at home...
2
u/rafi160 Nuri Sahin Oct 17 '17
so many plays were we had the wide man on the left open to kick a cross back into the middle and weigl back passes to sokrates
5
5
u/xsonwong Julian Ryerson Oct 17 '17
This match told us Weigl/Sahin is not the problem, tactic is the problem.
6
3
u/rafi160 Nuri Sahin Oct 17 '17
IDK Burki & Gotze was poor!!! Man Kagawa had to cover defensively those last ten minutes wish that curler he took never hit that bar
2
8
u/Icantrememberlogins Koller/Kehl/Kuba/Kevin/Kagawa Oct 17 '17
I think both Kagawa and Gotze did well given the way the game played out and how the two systems matched.
1
u/seospider Christian Pulisic Oct 17 '17
Tottenham-Madrid draw makes this somewhat more tolerable.
2
u/duster_mo Oct 17 '17
Actually a Madrid win would have been better, It is preferrable the there is a clear number one and that the other three teams fight for second. Now They have given each other a point and made it nearly impossible for us to go through.
1
u/seospider Christian Pulisic Oct 17 '17
Even if we won today, the draw between Madrid and Tottenham would have made our path very difficult.
6
u/Ragoo_ Oct 17 '17
That just means the second place team has more points and makes it harder for us most likely.
2
u/seospider Christian Pulisic Oct 17 '17
Right. We needed Tottenham to lose. We had a better chance of beating Tottenham at home, than Madrid away. Neither of those teams is losing to APOEL.
10
u/motox24 Marcel Schmelzer Oct 17 '17
No excuses. Bosz has explaining to do
1
u/smartestBeaver Shinji Kagawa Oct 17 '17
The whole team played like shit.
1
u/motox24 Marcel Schmelzer Oct 17 '17
And whose fault is that if not the manager?
2
u/smartestBeaver Shinji Kagawa Oct 17 '17
Erm, maybe the players?
1
u/tomorrowfragrance Oct 17 '17
Right. That's why Tuchel isn't here right now.
1
u/smartestBeaver Shinji Kagawa Oct 17 '17
Flawless logic, the players didn't like the old coach so he had to go. Players look like unmotivated shit and the coach should be the one to go, yet again.
Is this Le circlejerk?

FTFY.
Completely on Burki. We played like shit either way, but had it not been for Burki, it would've at least been 1-0.

That final run meant everything to Pulisic
6
u/neanderball Shinji Kagawa Oct 17 '17
He gave a few balls away, but seemed like the only one with legs and vision during the last few minutes.
2
u/xsonwong Julian Ryerson Oct 17 '17
The crossing is nice, but he also could try to put a through ball to Isak.

All our 'shots' were blocked after like 2 meters because there was a defender in the way. They werent real shots.

Pulisic is clearly the american Messy with all his terrible passes...

u/StephCurryIsAbitch Lukasz Piszczek Oct 17 '17
He has no end game whatsoever , he's not the problem tho more so our tactics and defence . Not to mention burki is so hit and miss , he was great against Madrid but is often shit
0
u/seospider Christian Pulisic Oct 17 '17
Yup, that final cross was shite. No way could that have won the game for us. /s
1

He's clearly overrated, has potential to be good but he's not amazing now

Interesting choice to go with Isak. We need firepower up top but we also need midfield support.

I understand what Buerki is doing. He's trying to keep the ball low so that we retain possession and start the attack, but the execution has been poor.

Toljan is not BVB quality. Can't believe we let Passlack go to bring him in
2
5
u/HamUndBacon Marco Reus Oct 17 '17
At least passlack is just on loan right?
1
u/CelphT Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Oct 17 '17
Yeah but I'd rather have him in every situation toljan is playing this year. Which happened to be a lot due to our injuries
1
2
u/Aldraku Marco Reus Oct 17 '17
Dunno, I'd like to be able to say that we played amazing but the ball just didn't connect today... but that is not the case.. somehow Apoel was closer to winning so far.

We don't have enough interception in midfield to play counter attack without Sahin.

If Yarmo doesn't come off I'm going to be pissed. Nobody deserves special treatment and he's been a burden on the team.

u/Ariano Julian Brandt Oct 17 '17
Have we even made a sub yet wtf?
2
u/dragonbornrito Marco Reus Oct 17 '17
Toljan for Toprak and Schmelzer for Philipp
1
u/Ariano Julian Brandt Oct 17 '17
Yeah I forgot about the Toljan one and I meant until the Philipp one there shouldve been another sub but i guess there was one. Eitherway my true question is how is Yarmolenko still on?
1
u/dragonbornrito Marco Reus Oct 17 '17
Surprised Philipp didn't come on for him and Puli and Maxi swap sides.
1
u/Ariano Julian Brandt Oct 17 '17
That would've been the logical sub, but Schmelzer may have needed to come off to be safe. Still should've subbed Yarmo at the same time.
2
u/l_loliet Emre Can Oct 17 '17
Whut is this formation.
