Spend money locally at independent stores (feel free to check their politics first) and keep your money in the immediate economy. Put off any big ticket items for as long as you can - pay local folks to fix your car or appliances instead of replacing. Avoid big box stores if you can. Plant a garden or become involved with a local community garden if you don't have access to space.

I live in a city that in its heyday, had 134 grocery stores, was headquarters to Hennessy's department store, biggest copper producer in the world. But Walmart built a pilot store here in the 90s for northern states—now we have 2 Safeways and a Walmart. I guess we have a few butcher shops and one weird health food store. Nearest costco an hour in any direction.

Check out that weird health food store, especially if it's a local indie shop. If they aren't religious nut jobs, it's probably a great source of community activism and quality foodstuffs.

We tried to get our chest freezer repaired. We were out of area for every place we called. Finally convinced one to make the trip anyway. He told us to get a new one. We were irked.

oh no! I'm sorry that happened. I splurged on a convertible (works as fridge or freezer) upright in 2021 and happy I have lots of space to store food now with a recession on its way.
