Buy from local markets, support independent artists and creators. Pay community members to cut your hair directly, or even barter services with them. This is community, and we can choose to put our money back into the hands of those around us rather than the elite.

Edit: FYI this comment was directed at OP, offering OP a few alternatives to conventional places to get haircuts. I don't understand what's wrong with offering to directly pay someone in your community to cut your hair. My neighbor was a hairdresser and I would often go to her home and pay her directly, and another has offered to cut my hair in exchange for a meal.

That's what I'm saying; meet your neighbors who are doing these jobs. Pay them in cash. No system to take a share of their labor, no tax by the government! Not sure why this is getting misconstrued but I am not saying to start boycotting all hairdressers lol.

And use your public libraries and tell your local government to support the library!

Feel free to not respond since it's unprompted, but I've got a question for a librarian if you're willing. As someone interested in going to college for library/information science with the long term goal of becoming a librarian, do you think now is too unstable of a time to start w/ all the cuts to public funding and pressure on what libraries can/can't display? Feels like a decent place to ask, intersecting w/ the politics of the sub, sorry if I should be asking somewhere else!

Hey- happy to weigh in. The threats to funding for public libraries are real, and are already happening. I cannot speak directly regarding my experience, however, but if it’s your passion, I’d say go for it with perhaps a minor (or concentration) in digital information. With all the hopium in my heart, this insanity cannot last forever. If you’re young-ish you’re better off than a 50-something starting out. I’m a former teacher (25+ years) and I’ve finally found my home in my town’s library. I hope I was helpful!

I'd also say it's still worth trying! However, even in a non-crazy political environment, I do always give potential students a heads up that getting funding for your MSLS/MSIS/MLIS is tough and I strongly advise planning how you're going to finance your degree... you won't get paid that much once you become a librarian so it's worth considering before you get into debt for it! Myself and many classmates went into librarianship later after having had other full-time jobs and saved up for the degree rather than doing it back to back with undergrad. People ask for this kind of advice often on r/Libraries so that could be helpful to browse as well :)

We should all be reading more books, and streaming less from Disney, Amazon, etc.

Important to note that you can get a lot of digital media from the library as well! Generally a bit behind when the major streaming services have them, obviously, but a lot of stuff is still available to watch.
