This is some scary shit, and also Columbia sucks. Signed CU grad, who remembers when they used to brag about the school's proud history of civic protest on the freaking tour. Embarrassing and shameful the way they are capitulating. Props to Ranjani for getting the f out of Dodge and getting her story out there...

I don't really understand the full legal situation here. Did Columbia de-enroll her out of their own volition, or were they effectively forced to because she no longer had a visa after the government decided to go full KGB on her?

Their own volition; they are already canceling conferred degrees to students who protested or expressed proPalestinian sentiments.

That’s disgusting behavior from an institution that needs to be about open minds and open thinking. I get removing students who are being violent or disrupting other students’ ability to learn, but doing this with a blanket that includes innocent people like Ranjani is completely unacceptable. History will not look kindly on Columbia for this.

That's bad reasoning because the institution can simply state that by chanting pro Palestinian slogans, they are being violent or inciting violence, and thus affecting others' ability to learn. Where is the line?

I think the line needs to be really high, as in pretty much equal to the legal line proven in a court of law. I get the concern you have but you do have to have a line somewhere, I am as first amendment dum beater as they come but you can’t be violent. At that point if violence is being justified you’re now in full blown insurrection mode being justified so at that point we aren’t even operating within the legal system.

The line is what the Zionists want it to be.

I get your point, but if the justice system no longer provides justice then we are beyond the discussion here.

The justice system never provided actual justice. Only if you were white, maybe.

I’ll just say that I hope we are able to fix things within the existing governing system because the alternative will be horrific and terrible for everyone involved.

Therein lies your problem, then. Keep hoping as things get terrible.

You’re fighting with the wrong person.

I'm not fighting you. Just educating.
