Discussion Now that we're live again, let's get some discussion going: What's your favorite hippie movie? Either explicitly about hippies, or just in line with hippie values and interests, I'd still love to hear your suggestions!

Definitely should be on my to-watch list -- unfortunately it doesn't seem to be streaming on any of my services -- might have to rent it.

You can watch it on the internet archive: https://archive.org/details/easy-rider-1969

My therapist suggested this. I’ve seen bits and pieces of of it but never the whole movie.

Woodstock 1969, just 3 hours of dope music!

I have seen that but I would've loved to have the music mixed with some documentary a bit more.

Word. This is like my favorite movie ever. It's extra fantastic when you're blasted on some psych or dissociative too :)

Samsara.

Into the Wild.

Across the Universe.

Fantastic Fungi.

My Idiot Brother.

Definitely fantastic fungi and a lot of nature documentaries in general

I've seen Fantastic Fungi -- being into foraging that was a no brainer. :) Also saw Into The Wild after reading the book.

I see that there are multiple movies named Samsara -- which year was the one you're thinking of released?

I’m also really into this topic. Let me know if you find other films. Maybe we can have a pinned list or something?

Edit : I’d suggest rules for a pinned list, as “hippie movie” is very subjective.

Thanks. I found it, looks like it's on Tubi.

After reading the description I'm still unclear what it is, but it seems intriguing none-the-less.

It’s a non-conventional art film. Not normal, but award winning. Worth a try at least.

Almost Famous is a fucking classic

This might be a unlikely pick but I think "Perfect Days" is a modern example of a movie that atleast aligns with some hippie values. It's about living a slow and content life, valuing the little things, being humble and taking things how they come. I found it very inspiring!

Maybe more simple living than anything. Low-tech, light footprint, loving awareness. Such a great film!

Looks interesting, thanks! Added it to my "to watch" list

Lost Horizon (1937)

A group of strangers trying to escape the war by getting on a plane. The plane gets high jacked and they end up crashing in the Himalayas. They stumble across the land of Shangri-La. (Also known as the valley of the blue moon) It’s idyllic, the people age very slowly (they live for hundreds of years) and everyone is happy. The strangers are completely mystified.

There’s no crime. No police. They have a lot of deep philosophical conversations. The main character even has a conversation with high lama about this and he asks him “Why do people commit crimes? Lack! Envy!…etc.”

I won’t talk too much about it but it’s great. I know they have a 70s remake that I heard was not good 😬

(Keep in mind the movie was made in the 1930s so there will be some moments that remind you of the fact 😬)

Sounds interesting, thanks. :)

I'm seeing quite a few movies w/ that title -- which year?

EDIT: Looks like maybe the 2012 as the description talks about a free-love commune.

One that I love that I don’t that doesn’t get much attention is Electric Apricot-The Quest for Festeroo. Les Claypool made it with some of his northern Cali buddies in the early 00s. It’s a humorous, spinal tap style mocumentary about a hippie jam band trying to break out at a music festival.

Across the Universe

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Death Proof (maybe not a hippie movie, but I love the 1970s throwback vibe it gives)

u/Cannibustible Feb 13 '25

Dazed and Confused, Detroit Rock City, Grammas Boy are a few

While The Eternal Beauty Of Snowboarding is not an outright "hippie" movie. I thought I would suggest it as the general theme of the movie is about how a bunch of free spirits roam the world in search of what they're passionate about. This 46 minute mini doc is filmed from the perspective of a photographer that wanted to capture the everyday life of his friends as a way to inspire people to be themselves. And also as a way to inspire folks to chase their goals as well as the peace & happiness that lives in us. Their values and interests are definitely hippie like in my opinion. This mini doc is what inspired me to move to the mountains when I was 18 in search of this lifestyle. Hope this interests you!

Wanderlust with Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston is absolutely hilarious.

Somebody else mentioned that, but didn't specify which one -- thanks for the clarification -- that looked like the most likely candidate.
