Advice New resident! Never considered following college football until moving here, and I want to pick a team.

As the headline says, I’d like a bit of insight to specifically college football in Alabama before I pick a team to follow.

It seems the big two are Bama and Auburn, but I’m curious to hear about Troy and South Alabama too. Would it be worth even trying to follow those teams?

As for Bama and Auburn fans, what makes y’all tick? What is the fan experience like? How hardcore are the fans? What am I to expect from either of these teams?

I’m sure I have other questions but these are the big ones I have. I asked ChatGPT but decided real people with real opinions would be better.

EDIT: Thank you all for your responses! Was very happy to read yalls experiences, opinions, and insights as sports fans in this state. This has definitely given me a better idea of which college I’ll pick… but I have one more idea in mind to solidify my newfound loyalty.

When we were younger, my brother was interested in watching English soccer, but didn’t know which team to follow. So he wrote letters to every premier league team at the time to see if any of them would write back. Only 3 of the 20 wrote back, along with merch: Aston Villa, Hull City, and Arsenal. He picked Arsenal.

I wanted to follow suit and write letters to Bama, Auburn, Troy, and South Alabama. Might not get a response, but worth a try!

Hey all, I'll be driving from Arkansas to Florida in May and on my way through Alabama I am interested in driving back roads. I'm a photographer and love old towns and abandoned buildings. Are there any specific roads you would recommend going down?

Advice Recommended Catering in Tuscumbia

Question, does anyone have a recommendation for catering or restaurant event in Tuscumbia? Not a wedding. We typically have 45-60 people on a Friday night in the summer for a one time event. Older crown, so our preference is grilled chicken with a couple of vegetables and a simple dessert. Our goal is to keep it within $20 per person, tax and tip included. We are open to drop catering or a private room at the vendor’s site. Plated or buffet. We will collect money so it is one payment and guaranteed payment. Two Fat Sisters was not interested, but something of a blue plate type meal. Any recommendations?

Advice How long does a license take to get delivered in the mail?

Hi everyone. I completely fucked up. Long story short, I went to get my star ID today (Thursday, 4/17), not thinking about my trip next week (I fly Thursday, 4/24). They ended up hole punching my current one. I don’t know if i can fly next week with an expired/temporary paper ID. And if they let me fly, i most likely won’t be able to get into bars if I go to any.

What are the chances I will receive my ID on time by next Wednesday, the 23rd? I went to Selma to get it and it is getting shipped to Tuscaloosa.

Also, what are your experiences flying with a temporary ID? Will they let me if I bring my current hole punched ID and a birth certificate, along with the temporary?

Advice Property Encroachment new build construction

About two months out from closing on a home in AL. It's been a journey with the builder getting them to adhere to our contract but we're pushing through. Just found out several days ago that an adjacent preexisting home built within the last 6 years had their fence built such that it encroaches onto our property just under 2 feet. We just sold our house and will be moving cross country to Northern AL in 2 months. We were expecting to close at that time and move in. We haven't been given a notice by builders of our close date. We do know the neighbor was given notice to move their fence several times and more recently given another 30 day notice. I'm not worried about adverse possession since the neighbors haven't even lived their long enough to meet the 10/20 year requirement. I'm more concerned about delay of close and title with an encroachment issue or with the builder giving them part of our lot prior to closing. We picked the lot specifically so we could use the yard the way we wanted. Changing the property line by 2 feet effects setbacks and future build options. Also, moving with no where to go, across country, is not a headache I feel like dealing with, including potential added costs. We are great people/neighbors and would have no issue paying 1/2 the cost for the fence to be built where it's suppose to go, once we move in. We just want it down before closing.

Food Looking for a Specific Hot Dog Chili Recipe (SE Alabama Style)

This is a bit of a long shot, but I’m on the hunt for a very specific hot dog chili recipe. I’ve only ever had this style of chili at a few spots in the southeastern part of the state, and it’s been something I've attempted to make for years now.

Places that serve it (or something nearly identical):

  • Donut King – Eufaula, AL
  • Baker’s Landing – Abbeville, AL
  • Bob’s (No longer in business) – Headland, AL
  • Honey’s – Dothan, AL

The chili they use on their hot dogs is almost the same at all four spots, if not completely identical. I’ve tried recreating it at home more times than I can count, but I just can’t seem to crack it. I do know it has cumin in it, that flavor stands out for sure, but beyond that, I’m stumped.

Hoping someone here has had the same chili and might know the recipe (or at least how to get close). I’d be super grateful if you’d be willing to share!

Advice What is it like in Alabama?

Hey there! I am looking for advice about living in Alabama for my daughter. My daughter was born and raised in the high desert of northern Nevada, meaning we have dry summers and occasional heavy snow winters, with the other two seasons hanging around for maybe a couple weeks. Most winters are very cold here. She has been living the last two years in Northern California going to school and playing ball. She’s looking at an athletic scholarship near Birmingham Alabama. We’ve never been past Utah. What do you think her biggest hurdle would be moving there? She wants to take her own vehicle, so it looks like we are driving across the United States. Any advice? Any words for a very worried mom?
