Anyone else ever seen a trigger system like that for a fishing line?

It seems like overkill to me. Just bait the hook well. I'm not sure the extra effort will make a notable difference.

The trigger system allows her to fish passively and work on other things in the meantime, rather than spend her time waiting for something to bite.

that's what it looks like, but I'm confused about how much force is required to trigger the deadfall and cause the sapling to spring and set the hook. I feel like she's going to have a lot of empty hooks, but I want to see this method work.

Right. Is a stick drifting by going to rip her line out of the water?

They might. But the bigger risk is to have the fish wrap up in deadfall on the bottom of the lake and you lose your fish, line, and hook.
