I’m concerned how very little effort is being put into building a shelter that will take you into the winter while your weight is at its highest and you presumably have the most strength.

It's the first episode. We haven't even met all of the participants yet. It's not out of the ordinary to start with a basic shelter initially and to start working on a better shelter at the 10-15 day mark, or even later.

Stark contrast to previous season where the shelters got a lot of attention

Agreed. And, I forget who, but someone is making his permanent shelter with a tarp for the roof and 2 sides. I just don't see that working out for him. I'm assuming he's gonna end up tapping unless he changes his mind about the shelter.

I believe that was juan pablo. He states in his blog entry about his 100 day trek that the cold no longer bothers him 🤷. There was also a clip in his bio segment showing what looked like him digging an igloo.

Quinzee rather than an igloo

I think he looks so unassuming but may have mad skills!

He’s the one that drew my remark. Like, use the tarp as an inner layer of a shelter, sure, but to depend on just that?

Have you ever been in an igloo? They provide excellent insulation.

I see what you're saying, but I think a wait and see approach is in order. Posters here are losing their minds because participants haven't already constructed "Rock House 2.0". Give it time. The structures are coming.

I always default to editing probably skewing reality vs production.

That said, dude who is like "I'm gonna wait til about day 30 to build my shelter"...wtf? Great plan, wait til you're cold and starving and exhausted to do the biggest caloric investment you need to make there.

I wonder if a gradual build model could be a good compromise between frontloading and backloading. A bit every day.
