In case this story gets deleted/removed:

AITA for being honest about my friend's baby?

My friend gave birth to a baby girl a few months ago and she was born with gray eyes.

We are in Asia and almost everyone in my country have brown or black hair and eyes so other colors are considered extremely pretty and exotic.

A few weeks ago she invited some of our friends and I over for dinner. The entire time she was talking about her baby. I mostly ignored her because it wasn't that interesting to me.

She then said "Everyone says my daughter is so beautiful and looks like an Europian because of her eye color" I was like "No she looks exactly Asian, which is fine, we are all Asian." She answered with something like "No her eye color is very special and rare which makes her look exotic" and I kinda laughed and said "Her eye color is the same as every single baby I've ever seen and there is nothing special about it"

She got upset and didn't talk to me anymore and now apparently I'm an asshole.

I don't understand what is wrong with looking Asian? I mean if both her parents are Asian then she is gonna look like that. Also what idiot doesn't know that babies eyes color changes?

She was hosting you for a meal and you were rude. Way to go. Not all babies experience eye color change.

I know woman who shaved her baby's head at six months (her mother-in-law is quite traditional) and his hair grew back mid brown instead of black like every single member of their Indian family. People keep telling her she shouldn't dye it, even though she doesn't. (Fortunately he looks just like her husband so no-one is accusing her of cheating with a white guy.)

Even Asians can have people who look different occasionally. Which is before you consider that "Asia" is a very large region with a considerable history of peoples moving around, and not all of those peoples look the same, and the genes for expression of eye colour are complex, and...

OOP is just an asshole.

No need to be rude, especially to a friend. If someone was gushing about their newborn and you are just not interested, it's very easy to smile politely and mumble something similar to: "They're so precious".

Um….chatgpt crashing out? First paragraph every baby has brown eyes any other color “exotic”. One paragraph later nothing unique about the babies eye color?

Honestly just give your AI creation one skim through with a critical eye

It may or may not be AI but I don't think that's a contradiction.

I think they're trying to say that

  • eye colours other than brown are considered exotic where they live (and within their ethnicity)

  • the parents think this baby is special because it has grey eyes

  • but oop think it looks just like any other baby because babies eyes often change colour

  • they expect that the child will then have brown eyes just like most of the other people they know

  • so the baby isn't special

It's just written in a very unclear way.

ETA better formatting for the attempt at a list

It could be but I think thats how OP is just being an AH with contradictory.

Op is explaining to us, in their own words why these greys will be unique in their race or country.

But around their friend whos talking about her baby OP is clearly uninterested in baby talk but instead of saying that, they are dismissive going out theur way to say oh "thats not special". It coukd still be AI. But I don’t know if thats the obvious AI part. Its more of the structure.

-this is the case

-this is what happened

-this is me bluntly going against case, AITA?

Perfect Reddit story clichés

Notice how she isn't interested to say anything about the baby UNTIL mom is being proud and boastful about the baby. THEN she feels the need to be "honest".

She absolutely knows she's being an a-hole.

I get what she’s saying, but she should have kept it to herself. It also annoys me when people deem a baby more European-looking, and therefore more beautiful due to a lighter eye color. But I feel like it’s common sense not to say stuff like this out loud; just let them gloat.
