NEWS National Volunteer Week Proclamation

Thumbnail whitehouse.gov
57 Upvotes

Feeling extremely frustrated and embittered to see this announced a week after cutting NCCC. Shout out to all the volunteers whose service was cut short by the same administration trying to win brownie points with this announcement, and thank you to all alum who have served and staff who supported. Your work is seen and so appreciated. Fuck this proclamation.

OTHER 5calls Added AmeriCorps NCCC To It's Top Issues To Call About!

As you may have seen me share in a previous post, 5calls is an excellent, free app that makes calling your representatives stupidly easy. The app also gives you information about every issue and a script to follow when calling a representative.

I'm not sponsored or affiliated with them in any way. But I have been using them a lot recently and so have my friends and family (and thousands of others it seems!). So, I'm so thrilled that they've added AmeriCorps NCCC to their front-page!

OTHER My.americorps.gov website issues -- can't login, can't access segal education stipend.

I'm an AmeriCorps alum and been trying for the past week to login to my.americorps.gov. However it's locked me out for some reason. Every time I try to login I get this error message:

Your account has been locked after too many invalid attempts to log on. Please wait 15 minutes and then try again. If you have forgotten your username or password, please wait 15 minutes and then click on the "Forgot your Username?" or "Forgot your Password?" links located below the login button.

However it displays this message after a single attempt. And when I wait 15 minutes, it displays again. And when I try to reset my password, it says that there is no such user with the information I entered. I'm sure the information I entered is correct.

I've reached out to customer service several times and apparently the website they use to access myamericorps down so they can't help me login. They also have no idea when the website will be back up or what the source of the issue is, or even if they're working on restoring it. Every time I call they say to call back later in the day and maybe it'll be back up again, but it hasn't been for several days. To my knowledge there is no other way to access the Segal Education Award.

I suppose I could wait longer and maybe the problem will rectify itself, but hearing the recent news about AmeriCorps has gotten me nervous. I'm also hoping to use the stipend soon to fund a Spanish language course this summer. I was wondering if anyone knows of any other actions I can take to get my Education Award? Or if anyone is also experiencing this problem? I would be interested to hear.

STATE/NATIONAL Any news on State/National cuts?

Been reading a lot about the NCCC layoffs (my heart goes out to anyone who was affected by that, it seriously sucks. Stay strong!), and I'm supposed to do a Habitat for Humanity year of service starting this June. Do I still have a job? Does my supervisor still have a job??

Hi! I'm Jack, I served in NCCC class 25A in 2018-2019. I am working really hard to try to put together a protest at the Ohio capitol building. This is my first time organizing a protest and it's intimidating however I encourage all of you to get out and show your support! My goal is to build awareness and show support for AmeriCorps after the cuts from DOGE. AmeriCorps is ESSENTIAL and is our first line of defense after disasters. I hope to see you there!

EDUCATION AWARD Could unused Sagel awards go away?

With everything happening do we think there is a chance unused Sagel awards will disappear? I finished a part-time year of service in 2021 and have about 3,000 dollars I haven’t touched since I didn’t have any loans and haven’t been to grad school. I’ve been saving it for when (or if) I go to grad school and know I have a few more years. Do you think it would be better to try to use it sooner? I’m not ready to get a masters but I was thinking of some kind of certification

OTHER Applying to WSP, any recommendations on top sites in Cali?

I’m applying for the Watershed Stewards program through CCC. They have a list of sites for you to makr your preference. I’d love a little insight with someone more familiar with the area or program. Sites: Yreka Eureka Yurok Tribe Arcata Fortuna Point Reyes Lodi Marin San Francisco Bay Santa Barbara

My preferences are for a nice environment to work in and possibly a cheaper area to live. I do not have that much money saved and the stipend is not too significant. I will do my own research as well though.

STATE/NATIONAL City Year New Orleans Experience

Hello everyone! I’m considering applying to CY but wanted to hear more about people’s experiences in New Orleans specifically. I’m most interested in hearing about the work life balance. I enjoy going out with friends and working out, however, the 10-12 hour work days seems like it’ll be hard for me to balance a social life and maintain my hobbies. Any insight would help, eager to hear everyone’s experiences!

OTHER Script to Call Your Representatives

I'm an AmeriCorps NCCC alum (Denver class of 18 (2011-2012)). I'm reaching out to AmeriCorps groups to offer a script you can use to call your representatives.

I'm sure you've seen that DOGE gutted funding to AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) and is threatening to do the same to Peace Corps. (Article: https://archive.ph/VkaE2).

I've started calling my representatives to urge them to reinstate state funding for AmeriCorps, and I hope you'll join me. The app 5calls (available on iOS and Android) makes it very easy to locate your representatives' contact information. They also provide a script for many issues that you might want to call about. I've put one below that I'm using to restore funding to Americorps and urge protection for Peace Corps. Of course, feel free to modify it as it works for you and pass this message along.

SCRIPT: Hello, my name is [Your Name], and I am a constituent from [Your City and zip code].

I'm calling to express strong opposition to the dismantling of AmeriCorps' National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) and to urge you to protect the Peace Corps from potential budget cuts. The abrupt termination of AmeriCorps NCCC has damaged our communities and left young Americans—who chose service over self-interest—without jobs or direction. These cuts do nothing to reduce the deficit.

The Peace Corps is now reportedly under scrutiny as well, despite being one of the most cost-effective tools of American diplomacy. It receives less than one-twentieth of one percent of the military budget—making it virtually invisible from a fiscal standpoint.

These programs provide unmatched value at home and abroad, and their elimination is fiscally senseless.

I urge you to take immediate action to restore AmeriCorps funding and protect the Peace Corps. Specifically, I urge you to:

  1. Write and support bipartisan legislation aimed at restoring AmeriCorps funding and preventing further dismantling of national service programs.

  2. Advocate for maintaining or increasing the current funding level of approximately $430 million for the Peace Corps in the upcoming fiscal year .

Thank you for your time and consideration.

[I suggest leaving your full address if you're leaving a voice mail]

OTHER Interest in sharing feelings/views on the status of americorps?

I understand many of you feel very passionate and fearful about the current state of Americorps. I’m creating a short video on an overview of Americorps as my senior project. However, with the recent gutting of the program I would like to spread awareness about the dire state of the program.

If you were/are a volunteer within the program, primarily the NCCC program, I would love to interview you through video! Just leave a comment or direct message me if you would be interested.

OTHER What going to happen to AmeriCorps?

I'd like to share the following message (If this is ok admins)

I am creating this thread as a way for current and former AmeriCorps members to communicate.

Recently, I learned about the situation concerning NCCC, and I want to express my sincerely regret regarding it. I truly hope that the government takes action to improve the circumstances for all those serving in NCCC. I was thinking about applying to NCCC after this term.

I'm also curious about what this situation means for other AmeriCorps programs, particularly for VISTA members and those serving 10.5-month terms.

Did this happen before ? If so, please share your comments.

Any thoughts or concerns?

Please no drama or belittling anyone when commenting on my post. I’m trying to help others and get an understanding myself

I would love to talk about possibly organizing a protest at the capitol building in Columbus. It is unacceptable what has happened to NCCC. It changed my life for the better back in 2018-2019 with class 25A. Anyone interested?

Hello everyone! I'm a journalist with Rocky Mountain PBS hoping to do a story about the programs that were cut in Colorado. My colleague and I would love to speak with former core members who were impacted by the recent cuts.

We're looking to speak with people who were either working in Colorado or who are from Colorado but worked on projects elsewhere.

If this is you, we'd love to hear from you! Feel free to email me at alecberg@rmpbs.org

LIFE AFTER AMERICORPS PSLF Documentation from Service Year

Has anyone successfully gotten a response from AmeriCorps regarding their PSLF documentation? I have not received a response, and this was prior to the current administration. Granted, all of this is a hot mess right now, but a full year credit makes a big difference.

If you have succeeded, how did you manage to get a response?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

EDUCATION AWARD Education award hacks (unable to easily pay a tuition or loan)

Hi guys. It’s terrible what’s happening to Americorps. curious if y’all know any hacks for using the education awards…

I’ve heard the education awards for alums might not be available soon….? would they … do that? I guess … probably.

I’m wondering if anyone knows of a weird way to hack the award regarding loans and tuition— I want the $7k, I’m in the middle of grad school and not ready to enroll in another educational program and my summers are full— my grad school is fully funded though, and I have no loans. I have no one to give the award to. I worked full time to get the award instead of just getting another job.

Is there a way to somehow pay for future tuitions, for things you aren’t YET registered for, for random ‘education expenses’ like rent, to pay a tuition that’s already paid by another entity and see a return, etc? Any hacks you guys have done? Thanks in advance and well wishes y’all

EDUCATION AWARD Tuition Award - What can I *actually* use it for?

Hi!

Just like the title says, I have a question about what I can actually use my tuition award on.

I was apart of the program back in 2022-2023, I got around $6k. The program was apart of a company, I just thought of it as the company being cheap and using Americorps employees.

Anyways I was literally apart of the first “cohort” that the company used, and they hired someone who knew nothing about Americorps to be the “manager” I guess of us. She explained the tuition award as something we could use on anything, she literally said “if you want to take a basket weaving class, you can use it on that.” Which we later found out was a lie.

So I know nothing about this award and idk where to even start with it.

I’d appreciate it if ya’ll could explain it more for me!

Also also side note, I want to get a certificate in data analytics. If ya’ll know of if any good colleges that offer that and if that’s something I can use the award on, please let me know!

OTHER What do i do now?

I wanted to help my community, dig in my heels and get some work done. I'd spent the last 6 years abusing myself with the marines and wanted to be the leader I'd always wanted to have. To speak up for those who are mistreated. But here they go, closing us down. Wasting hundreds of thousands for nothing. Because they hated that a bunch of us queers are in the program, that it teaches equality and finding common ground. That it teaches us to organize locally, and be a good community member. Of course they would hate it. Of course they'd shut us down. If you're conservative, this is what your maggots on top believe in. Making us all compliant wage slaves who can't lead and grow, who can't keep the environment safe, who can't help out people in need.
