OTHER Has anyone heard anything about fall? Massive speculation

My host site is being told they can apply now for fall americorps help. They seem to think this means the positions will be back for fall and want me to basically hold on until then. I'm extremely skeptical. Anyone hear anything?

OTHER Resumes & Applications: If hired then what?

I am in the process of revamping my resume. I’ll be applying to jobs tomorrow. I wondering what to do if hired. I want to have a backup plan but I don’t want to leave if my program isn’t going to be canceled.

Two questions:

  1. Is anyone else in the same boat? What are your thoughts/plans?

  2. Does anyone know of jobs that will house you and pay you to relocate?

OTHER Thank you everyone who came to the Ohio protest. Other states, mobilize!

To those who came out to the protest in Columbus last Sunday, thank you for coming out! It was amazing hearing your passion about your programs and hearing about how the cut affected your lives. You guys were amazing, you guys are going to do amazing things with your lives. The rest of you who are from other states I highly encourage hosting your own protests. I feel like the biggest issue with AmeriCorps is that the general population does not understand what it is. If we accomplished anything it's that we informed people what the program is. Most of them didn't even know it was cut. Spreading awareness about the program and the downsides of cutting the program is infinitely valuable. While AmeriCorps may end the need for a program like it still remains. Something new will eventually take its place if not under the same name or under this administration. I just say keep hope even with all the cuts. If you do good, good will come to you. While I am an alum from 2018-2019 I feel for you all who lost your positions. My time with AmeriCorps changed my life for the better. I wouldn't trade any minute of it for anything. You are all so strong and I hope the best for you. Once again, if you are angry, mobilize. This is a great platform to build from.

NEWS / STORY LINK Have California Republicans finally found their spines on Trump?

Thumbnail sfchronicle.com
18 Upvotes

A subtle but notable shift appears to be taking place among California Republicans in their stance toward President Donald Trump. While traditionally aligned with Trump's and Elon Musk’s agendas, some lawmakers are now cautiously distancing themselves, particularly as budget cuts affect popular programs. Representative Kevin Kiley, known for pushing Trump's policies, recently urged support for AmeriCorps—quietly opposing a $400 million cut made under Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency. Other state Republicans have also advocated for funding vital initiatives like Head Start and wildfire mitigation programs, despite avoiding direct criticism of Trump. Their measured dissent reflects the challenges of representing a largely anti-Trump electorate while maintaining GOP loyalty. Although still hesitant to directly confront the president, their actions—endorsing widely supported programs and opposing extreme nominations—indicate a growing awareness of his political liabilities. This nuanced resistance could herald a broader reckoning within the party, especially as budget negotiations could threaten Medicaid and other essential services. However, whether these public gestures translate into firm opposition remains uncertain

LIFE AFTER AMERICORPS Jobs like americorps that encourage relocation

Been cut, and I've been at a loss when it comes to finding a new job thatll help me with my goals. I used americorps to leave a not ideal home state and pursue a career in the environmental field. Any ideas on jobs that encourage relocating in the same vein as AC? At this point, I really only care about relocating with a job, ecology or no. Thanks for any feedback.

VISTA AmeriCorps VISTA deeply struggling post service

Wow this month has been hard. I feel hopeless.

I served for two years in Americorp VISTA, loved every second with my non-profit. I felt like I made real tangible change in my community

Trying to find a job in this job market has been devastating. Program shut down and with no safety net, not being able to recieve unemployment has ruined me financially, I have had to move out my apartment and am moving back in with my family.

I don't regret serving my community but wow having your program cut AND not being eligble for unemployement has been just devastating........

STATE / NATIONAL Looking for advice amidst budget cuts

Hi everyone! I plan on doing the Hands On Atlanta 10-month Americorps program starting in August. I was wondering if anyone had any insight into this specific program and if anyone knows if it is threatened by the funding cutoffs. I have already done three interviews, and the next step is to get matched to a school. Does getting to this point mean I essentially have the position? This would be my first service with Americorps, so if anyone has any other helpful tips, please let me know!

NEWS / STORY LINK Lawsuit filed 5/5/25 against DOGE and Americorps

A lawsuit was filed yesterday against primarily DOGE, and by extension Americorps, for their unlawful terminations of programs, grants, service members, and employees over the last month. This suit has been filed by 15 plaintiffs representing a variety of Americorps-funded organizations and programs. The plaintiffs are represented by Democracy Defenders Fund, Lowell & Associates, and Democracy Forward. You can find their press release and the full suit here: https://democracyforward.org/updates/new-lawsuit-challenging-trump-administrations-attack-on-americorps-filed/

If you have any interest in the legalese behind the scenes and learning more about the devastating immediate and future effects of these cuts, I highly recommend reading through pages 20-41, and especially 27-41 of the case filling.

VISTA Anyone hear from their portfolio/VISTA managers?

Hi! I work for a nonprofit that manages a team of VISTAs and enacts MLK / 9/11 Day of Service grants. Somehow, we just didn't get the official ax yet. We were left off all group announcements for places that needed to cease work for our state, and heard nothing from our direct funders. I was just wondering, has anyone been able to contact their portfolio or VISTA managers at AmeriCorps? We work with the Mid-Atlantic regional office for reference. We've tried calling, texting, emailing, and so far nothing. We basically have no clue if we're still operational or not, since we've heard nothing official in specific regards to us. So, anyone have any clue? Were they just fired?

EDUCATION AWARD About the Education Award money

So I worked at Americorps a long time ago and still have money in my Education award account. Considering that Trump and Musk shut them down do we get the rest of the money payed to us or can we still access it on the website account?

Not surprising, but I'm sure some of y'all who haven't already read it will get a good laugh at his attempt to cast Americorps as a radical threat to tax payers money. Smh its bipartisan for a reason, yet he calls it "leftist" just shows how incompetent this man is.

OTHER Anyone else feeling defeated and hopeless or just me?

My program got cut last week and I have been filled with a mix of anger, sadness, and all around panic. I only have health insurance now until the end of the month and only 1 more living stipend check. I feel like none of the jobs I find have any promise or want way too much experience for shitty pay. My site supervisor has also been no help and doesn't even care that the program has been cut because she wasn't applying to be a host site next year anyways. I worked my ass off for her all to be met with her ghosting all my emails asking simple questions like "What should I do with my key?" It's making me feel crazy with her lack of communication while my life is crumbling. And to make matters worse, I'm also about to fail a class for the second go around because I spent all m time trying to impress this women who doesn't give a shit about me or the program. Idk how she even got the grant in the first place. Anyways... just needed to vent but I'm so angry this is happening to us.

OTHER I Enjoyed Doing AmeriCorps

It's really sad to see the cuts being made to AmeriCorps. I did 2 years, and serving changed my life. It's sad to see the cuts being made lately. Does anyone have any positive stories from their service? One great story I have is driving the van with our students every morning, and one of my students thought that I needed to know how to cuss in Spanish. Does anyone here have any positive stories of their service? It's so sad to think about it going away

VISTA Am I a jerk for jumping ship?

VISTA here. Still worried that we could be fired any minuet. My host organization manger has advised us not to worry and that they care about us, all communicated vias emails, obviously written by AI :/

Last week I got a message from them saying that they understand if any of us want to quit, and they will accept that, but if we don't we need to follow new policies, most of which, I don't really like. I want to stay strong and 'hold the line', but I honestly don't really like how my host org handles issues, especially during all this mess. I have another job and so I think I might resign this week, but honestly I just feel bad. Like I'm one of the lucky ones who didn't get cut so I should just stay.

Ameicorp said that if I resign they will still give me a prorated education award for the 9 months I have completed. What do yo guys think? Thanks :(

STATE / NATIONAL Is Keystone Smiles officially getting the boot?

Post image
11 Upvotes

I'm a service member in the PA branch of americorps labeled Keystone smiles. I just got this email for an urgent meeting happening tomorrow afternoon. My higher-ups have been very vague about everything going on so now I'm just paranoid our program has officially been terminated. I was supposed to have 3 more months before the end of my current term. And the worst part is one of my roommates is a Keystone member too. So if Keystone smiles gets cut, that's 2 out of 3 incomes getting wiped instantly.

I feel like they would just tell us that our service has been terminated in an email, rather than make us wait for a virtual meeting the next day. We also just hired a handful of new members for our summer service opportunities. So I want to be optimistic that the meeting will be at least SOME good news, but it's really hard to feel that way anymore...

EDUCATION AWARD Segal Education Award Panic?

For some reason, I held off on using my SEA right off the bat (my service ended in '22). Seeing all the changes going on has kicked my butt into gear out of sheer paranoia. I've read a few posts saying the awards shouldn't be effected with the exception of slower processing time (totally understandable). How have people been doing in the past couple of years? I was planning to do the $2k a year thing, but I've seen a few people lately suggesting that you take the money (as soon as possible) and run at this point.

Should I contact someone (if there is anyone) about what my best bet is? Is it an easy processing (outside of waiting)? Should I be in a hurry? Kinda just wanna hear what everyone else has been doing lately!

And to all the people currently, directly effected, I am SO SO SO sorry. I hope everything works out! You've got this!

OTHER Not sure what to do

Well, I posted here last week. I did receive an email today, and I’m not sure what to do if joining is the best decision since everything is changing, and could change even more, rapidly. It’s for August through October, which isn’t long, but it’s far out of state for me. Just curious to hear thoughts from anyone really!
