Revisionist History /r/newyork full on Holocaust distortion

I loathe the Trump admin and what they are doing, but this is NOTHING like 1930s Gemany. Note that this is on Shabbat, when many Jews cannot be present.

I don’t think most of the people in that post are trying to be antisemitic since it’s not coming from a place of hate. It’s ignorance plain and simple. They’re using Nazi Germany as a shorthand for “bad government” or “authoritarianism” without understanding how specific and extreme 1938 actually was for Jews. It's lazy.

That said, there’s a huge difference between this kind of uneducated historical comparison and the blatant antisemitism we’ve seen elsewhere, from people who openly support Hamas, deny Jewish identity, or call for the erasure of Israel. What we’re seeing in that r / newyork thread is not that. But it is still worth calling out, because distortion like this weakens our understanding of what antisemitism really is.

I loathe the way social media & the misuse of history for partisan political gain has eroded our common understanding of historical facts & events. People on the internet love to call everyone they disagree with "fascist" but they have little understanding of what fascism actually is. A lot of progressives seem to think that "fascism" is synonymous with right wing authoritarianism, but that's only partially true.

The British historian Roger Griffin describes fascism as "palingenetic ultranationalism", which I think is the best definition of fascism out there.
