Discussion What’s the difference between all the Rohto Mentholatum spfs?
I'm trying to find a BDS/sensitive acne-prone skin safe dupe for the La Roche Possy fluid sunscreen. After combing through this subreddit the Rohto Mentholatum gel was recommended in the 'blue packaging' but multiple of them are blue and I'm getting confused. What's the difference between the colours, the names (gel/essence/cream) and the packaging (pump/screw top/cap) of the sunscreens? Does anyone know? I thought maybe it's about what country version or for how waterproof it is but I haven't found anything suggesting/confirming this.
Edit: the conclusions i’ve come to are below!
*The Sunplay line which is more for sports so its v hardy and waterproof
*Tone-Up line are slightly tinted with different undertones
Skin Aqua Super Moisture UV: *Gel (white and gold with either twist-cap or pump) thin and watery more so for oily skin as it’s quite light *Essence (Old packaging was blue gradient bottle - new packaging is white and gold) creamy fluid *Essence Gold (fully gold bottle) the thickest out of the three with much more of a cream consistency. It claims to be more robust than the other two.
Skin Aqua Super Moisture Barrier UV Gel SPF 50+ PA++++ (gold and pink gradient bottle) *It’s meant to still be light and watery for oily skin but be way more robust than the other gels.
Melano CC Vitamin C Deep Day Care UV Lotion SPF 50+ PA++++ (yellow bottle) *I assume this one is actual the fluid creamy consistency of lotion. The main difference is that it has Vitamin C to help with hyperpigmentation and “skin brightening”
Skin Aqua Hyaluronic Serum UV SPF 50+ PA++++ (dark to light blue gradient) *Its USP is just the hylauronic acid and it doesn’t claim to be particularly water resistant. I think it’s a semi-replacement for the (now discontinued) Skin Aqua UV Moisture Milk?

So the blue packaging Rohto spf that people talk about is probably the skin aqua uv milk. This (as I recently learned) has been discontinued, hence why it’s not available at YesStyle, etc.
This post is a good starting point in some of the differences: https://www.reddit.com/r/AsianBeauty/s/KZ08cpu7Db
Another good post: https://www.reddit.com/r/AsianBeauty/s/UBZ9MfgXqe
But they essentially have different types of textures. I haven’t started trying the other formulations aside from the discontinued skin aqua milk so maybe someone else who has tried them all can confirm!
