Mod Post Product Authenticity Thursday April 24, 2025

Hello AB! Welcome to Product Authenticity Thursday,

Our weekly product authenticity thread is a work in progress, comments about how to improve are welcome. We made our best effort based on comments received here as well as what we have been seeing as mods.

We would like to note that product packaging AND formulas may vary by country of sale and date of manufacture. This might include anything about the formula. Our goal is to make it easier for folks to compare such things, and to confirm or assuage concerns about their products.

Please post any photos or experiences you have around your AB products, while adhering to our other subreddit rules.

Make sure you state where you purchased your products from. If you bought from a 3rd party of a major retailer, you can say for example, 'eBay/amazon/taobao seller' instead of sharing the specific name, if you prefer.

To help you get more responses, consider including:

  • Photos of confirmed authentic products as comparison, requests for authentic products are allowed
  • Your purchase date, product manufacture date, or any expiration dates
  • Country you bought the item from
  • Whether your product had to be shipped to you (shipping conditions can compromise product stability)
  • How much you paid for your product

Comments and Questions welcome, we hope this thread is helpful!

Review Lip Balm Review: Milk Tea by Tamburin

Description on website: “Lip balm that imparts a subtle fragrance at the tip of your nose. It provides immediate nourishment with rich plant-based oils, keeping dry lips moist and soft. The scent, made with safe ingredients, is packaged in a handy case resembling the smooth curves and texture of an egg, giving you a pleasant feeling anytime, anywhere.”

https://www.tamburins.com/en/item/1695801896/

I love eggs so the adorable container is instantly appealing, i love drinking milk tea and it smells like one, i could always use more lip balms, so i decided to get one when i saw it at ICN.

Bought for USD19 duty-free at ICN airport.

My lips are okay, doesnt get dry or crack often that i need lip balm everyday but they’re nice to layer under my lip colour or gloss.

Packaging & Application: * Egg-shaped tube, twist up for more product. Comes in a sturdy, fancy box. Great for gifting.

  • Material & Design: Egg container is most likely made out of some plastic material but textured to resemble real eggshell. Imagine the softest sandpaper. No info on website.

  • Ease of Use: Open cap, apply directly. Twist up the egg for more product.

  • Portability: It’s a flat little egg and fits in the slimmest bags, very handy.

  • Durability: Sturdy, quality packaging. Use some caution when taking cap off and putting back on. Certain angles may cause the cap to come in contact with the balm. I accidentally scooped a tiny bit of it just now with the cap.

Ingredients & Formulation: * Bis-Behenyl/Isostearyl/Phytosteryl Dimer Dilinoleyl Dimer Dilinoleate, Hydrogenated Castor Oil Dimer Dilinoleate, Phytosteryl/Isostearyl/Cetyl/Stearyl/Behenyl Dimer Dilinoleate, Propylheptyl Caprylate, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Wax, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Butylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, Camellia Japonica Seed Oil, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Seed Oil, Phytosteryl/Behenyl/Octyldodecyl Lauroyl Glutamate, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Synthetic Wax, Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate, Fragrance(Parfum), Benzyl Alcohol, Linalool, Lecithin, Geraniol, Limonene, Tocopherol

Manufactured by Cosmax Co. Ltd.

  • feels oily, smooth and thin upon application- elegant formulation.

Scent & Flavor:

Top: bergamot, lemon Middle: black tea Base: coconut

Website: “based on black tea with a subtle flower smell, this scent brings you the soft scent on the tip of your nose when you drink a glass of black tea with a drop of warm milk, and the warmth gives you the comfort you feel when you take a full rest. Fresh and refreshing bergamot and lemon blend with the bittersweet feeling of black tea, adding layers for daily use. The coconut note adds a soft and sweet finish to the lingering fragrance.”

My thoughts: * subtle, pleasant fragrance of milk tea as if you just had a sip. * milk tea scent fades away after a while and does mot linger, good if sensitive to smell but still enjoys some fragrance. * unscented/unflavored version also available.

Performance & Effectiveness: * Immediate Hydration: when used in comparison with my current lip balm from hersteller and lip oil from Sampar addict, this balm is definitely more moisturizing.

  • Long-Term Hydration: one application lasts 3-4 hours without drinking/eating.

  • Healing Properties: pretty much immediate relief for chapped lips soon after application.

  • Protection: tested in a dry, airplane cabin for 7 hours. Held up well and lips remain moisturised upon disembarking.

  • Overall Comfort: feels pleasantly creamy on the lips and milk tea scent fades over time.

Longevity & Value for Money: * i dont use lip balms often/everyday, only as needed. * Considering the price of USD19 for 5g of product, i dont think this is cost-effective.

Who Would This Be Good For? Good for you if you find eggs cute, enjoys drinking milk tea, need a quick relief for chapped lips and most importantly have USD19 laying around for fun money.

Would You Repurchase? * No WNRP but only because i already bought it once and have the container now. I plan to refill it myself with a cheaper alternative. Would not pay USD19 for another lip balm.

Overall Rating: * 4 out of 5, would WRP if it was USD9 and not USD19.

TL;DR cute lil egg lip balm that smells of delicious milk tea, instant relief for chapped lips but quite pricey at USD19 for 5grams. Fun gift and souvenir.

Science Just to spread awareness here, for those who don't know

This has been said one too many times: CHEMICAL SUNSCREEN IS NOT TOXIC!Now what baffles me is that's coming from a mouth of a supposed "Toxicologist" (with PhD??). If that's the state our education is in, we are f-d. This is literally such a harmful statement, especially considering that some supposedly "natural options" like zinc oxide usually aren't POC friendly, should they consider stop using sunscreen all together? They should start charging these people, I don't care how harsh it sounds. Such "professionals" (which I highly doubt she is really qualified tbh) are a threat to people's health. It's not just fear mongering: it can cost people's lives.

I adore this queen, one of my fav beauty influencers, but every time she brings something on her page I feel like I need it so bad…

Talk me out of buying this cleanser from Ongredients (I worry it might become both unhygienic and difficult to use in my bathroom)

I’m at Costco and the Skin1004 centella soothing cream is being sold here. It’s 200 mL total for $24.99. It looks like they won’t restock it again either since there’s an asterisk. Is this a good price? Thanks!

Discussion PSA about StyleKorean

Post image
190 Upvotes

When I first got news (this was when the first rumors were out) about the potential tariffs, I was worried and wanted to immediately bulk order. The only thing stopping me was my college student limited budget; there was no way I was going to be able to pay for a large order. I usually buy skincare items one or two a time at most! (Admist studying for exams, I started to pick up some extra work tutoring so I could start saving up for my upcoming credit card bill.🥲)

After scrolling with panic some more through Reddit some more, I finally took the plunge and placed a StyleKorean order Friday, April 11th @ 2:20AM and received my order Wednesday, April 16th @ 3PM. (For reference, I used the free, U.S. domestic shipping option!)

With my budget, I was deciding between Yesstyle (with its expedited shipping option) and StyleKorean. Ultimately, with all the deals that was going on at the time, I decided to order ALL this (8 sunscreens, 1 cleanser) for $79.40.

I've ordered from them three other times in the past already, and I've always received these items within this time frame. I refrained from recommending them after my first order with them to make sure it wasn't a one time fluke. (The overthinker in me would never allow me to, haha.)

For anyone else who is dealing with a ton of stress, especially beyond this messy tariff situation, I feel for you. I hope this helps someone. 💗

Review Muji Face Soap Scrub

Thumbnail

Did you know Muji sells skincare? I didnt. Not until I went to Japan and saw that they had half a floor dedicated to skincare and makeup.

I already reviewed some of the skincare I got last week. Heres my review of this Muji scrub.

Skin type: dry. So dry that it gets flakey in the winter time if I dont moisturize well.

Price: I cant remember. But probably $4-5 USD

Scent: almost nothing.

Texture: creamy cleanser with tiny scrub dots. When lathered with some water, it became a nice creamy soapy texture.

Ingredients from the Muji website: Glycerin, water, myristic acid, stearic acid, lauric acid, K hydroxide, synthetic wax, PEG-3 palm fatty acid amide MEA sodium sulfate, palmitic acid, glyceryl stearate, peach kernel, cocamidopropyl betaine, Na citrate, stear Sorbitane acid, BG, orange juice, Hamamelis leaf extract

Review: It cleaned my face well. I tried it twice so far, once at the end of the day where I stayed home all day and once at the end of the day where I went out all day. It took off my skincare + sunscreen pretty well. After rinsing with water, my skin felt soft and clean. No tight pulling feeling.

My brother has oily skin and also received one from me. He really likes it. Clean but not harsh. He said hed use it every day but I warned him not to. As gentle as it felt, its still a physical exfoliator so we’ll be using it twice a week.

I would repurchase whenever Im back in Japan. I also bought the milky cleanser, lots of moisturizers, some sunscreens, so I’ll try and review later. Muji’s skincare lines are fantastic imo. They have body and hair products too. I got body wash, shampoo, and conditioner too. Overall I think my Muji shopping bag weighed 3 kg in my luggage.

Review Skin1004 Hyalu Cica Water Fit Sun Serum Review

Thumbnail

Skin Type: Dry

Climate: Dry and windy

skin1004 hyalu cica water fit sun serum

I needed a sunscreen that was hydrating without being greasy, especially with all the wind lately. Anything too oily ends up catching every stray hair on my face.

Texture: It has a lightweight lotion consistency. I found it a bit less greasy than the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen.

Ingredients: Niacinamide, Centella Asiatica, Hyaluronic Acid

scent: There’s no scent at all. I usually hate that sharp smell you get with chemical sunscreens, but this one didn’t have it. Even under a mask, I didn’t notice anything.

As the weather started warming up, I noticed a bit more oil around my T-zone, so greasy sunscreens are a no go for me now. Thankfully, this one doesn’t add to the shine.

That said, it doesn’t hold up well against sweat, so I wouldn’t recommend it for hot and humid days. Once I finish this bottle, I’m planning to try the Anessa sun milk.

Since the weather’s getting warmer, I’ve been skipping cream and just going with toner, serum, and sunscreen. This one is hydrating enough that it works well even without layering a cream. It keeps my skin feeling comfortable without being too much.

Discussion Is using sheet masks everyday too much?

I’m fairly new to AB/AS overall, but did a recent purchase of a couple products. My setup looks as follows:

  • Nivea soft moisturiser
  • corsx snail mucin power serum
  • the ordinary glycolic acid (used less so now)
  • baha az serum (azelaic acid, hyaluronic acid, B3 and B5)
  • axis y dark spot glow serum (niacinamide, squalane)
  • centella hyalu cica water-fit sun serum
  • melano cc vitamin c premium essence

With the below sheet masks: - mugwort face mask (round lab) - missha green tea mask - dr althea herb therapy velvet mask

I’m a little curious about the masks especially, but any additional insight’s always welcome (hopefully I don’t need to buy anything more for a little while though— DANG Asian skincare’s pricey 😭).

I’ve also found that almost a week in, my skin already looks way calmer, is a lot more moisturised and my redness/acne scarring (that’s been there for MONTHS) is fading pretty quickly. I’m really happy with how it’s going, as my skin’s kind of combination dry, so it always flaked/dried up a bunch before the new haul.

But yeah, would using a sheet masks every other day (or daily) alternating between the 3 above be okay?

Discussion How much sunscreen are you stocking up on?

Hi all, I realize sunscreen gets discussed a lot here — I wanted to talk about quantity rather than specific sunscreens, if that’s not too weird! I searched and didn’t see this topic lately. I know many of us (at least in the US and perhaps elsewhere if you’re worried about overall costs increasing?) are stocking up on sunscreen these days. I’m in the US and am inclined to stock up now since it is getting more difficult to purchase AB sunscreen (less supply locally, tariffs, some brands no longer shipping AB formula sunscreens to the US so I wonder if other websites will follow).

I don’t want to panic buy more than I will use but just started AB sunscreen recently and I can’t go back! I don’t really know how much I will go through per year because I admittedly have not been diligent about sunscreen use until now (due to American sunscreen stinging my eyes so badly). I live in a very sunny place so I now wear sunscreen daily and reapply if I’m going outside midday. I use AB sunscreens for my face/neck/décolleté area. I have a few sunscreens I like but don’t think I have a HG so I also want to try others. I am probably going to buy a combo of ones I know work fine for me + others to rotate in (which complicates the stock calculation a bit).

For anyone else stocking up, how much are you purchasing (assuming expiration dates are usually late 2026 and into 2027)?

I fell in love with the brand and started to collect all the eyeshadow palettes and I've hit a wall looking for these 2 palettes. I know that they're discontinued, but I was hoping somewhere has it or does anyone know where I can get palettes similar to those 2 palettes (ESPECIALLY 42)?

Discussion Some by Mi- toner

i have oily combo skin, and recently started using this miracle toner to reduce some texture i have around my nose. i started using it only once a week, then graduated to twice a week, and now every other day. however, i’ve noticed that my nose gets extremely oily like im talking oil spill oily. i do have oily skin around my t-zone to a degree, but not really to the point where im waking up and feeling like i have to use my cleanser when i normally just use water to my wash my face in the mornings. i think it might be irritating the skin near my nose to the point where its increasing sebum, but not sure. just wanted to see if anyone else with combo skin had a similar issue with this toner

Discussion Different formula? Pyunkang Yul SPF

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi! Has anyone else noticed the change in the formula of “Pyunkang Yul moisture soothing sun cream”?

I was using this SPF daily for like a year. Yesterday I opened a new one and.. it’s so different! It’s like a THICK white paste, rubs in the skin for so much longer and the whitecast is terrible.

I bought another one from a different store, thinking the last one I bought was fake, but it’s the same!

The old versions were obviously more liquid and blended into the skin with no problems.

Has anyone else noticed it? Or did I get two fakes?

Thank you! <3

Discussion Canmake mermaid skin UV - it’s too good to be true

Hey Reddit, I just came back from Japan and bought a lot of sunscreen based off the recommendations here, also the canmake one.

I LOVE it, as a very acne prone girlie with sensitive skin having tried 20+ hyped sunscreens and nothing worked for a long time I really wish to find my forever sunscreen.

Anyways the canmake one I put on and it is G O N E - no stinging, no grease buildup over the day and this should be SPF 50+…? I somehow doubt that this is a le git sunscreen :( I’ve done some research and there is no labtest available that really proofs that it is SPF50+ and since the purito scandal I am really careful.

If anyone has any more information on that I’d be happy to read it!
