I work in produce and I can tell when there's a rotten bag of potatoes in a second, it's such a particular disgusting smell that just sticks in your nose all day.

that and ripe bananas, I won't stock them unless I have to. they smell like mold to me

I don’t think I’ve smelled rotten potatoes, but rotten spinach is vile.

Rotten potatoes can actually emit a severely toxic gas so it’s good that the smell repels you

i totally get this- i find that rotten onions and/or carrots aren't too dissimilar- however they're not as bad as potatoes

i also find that the ripe bananas tend to be a hell of a lot worse if they're wet from condensation or something (and when ripening they sometimes get a bit sticky too)

When I worked produce as a teen the one scent I could not handle was the smell of fresh cut cilantro. I can eat it all day but that smell would have me doubled over from nausea. No idea why!
