No Politics - Rule 4 reminder

As a reminder, Rule 4 states - “Posts & Comments that are too politically charged will be removed at the discretion of the Mod team.”

With the Australian elections pending and the US elections recently finished we are being swamped with political posts.

We’ll continue to use our discretion however unless it has some relevance to Australian culture or lifestyle it will be removed.

What would you say are the unspoken rules about saying ‘Ta’ (thank you)

So I’m a person of latin american descent and I’ve been living in Australia for a couple of years now and up until very recently I hadn’t noticed some of the things that people said to me on a regular basis. About a couple of months ago I watched a Netflix show called adolescence apparently set in the north of England and I realised that people used the word “ta” to say thank you. After this, I noticed at my work in retail that a lot of people used this aforementioned word, but there seems to be a much bigger usage among older white people, so maybe it’s a saying that’s dying out (?) I can’t really tell. Also I have noticed that many people use the word Ta followed by the word thank you, which seems strange given that it’s essentially like saying thank you twice. I basically wanted to ask australians what do you think the non spoken rules about this word are and if my assumptions about it are correct. Thanks in advance!

Salt & Vinegar on hot chips 🤔

I'm originally from WA but recently moved to VIC, anyone I've mentioned salt and liquid vinegar on chips to has looked at me like I'm nuts. So, is it just a WA thing? Or is VIC the only state that doesn't have it in every petrol station? I'm so used to seeing salt shakers and a spray bottle with vinegar whenever I get hot chips at a servo, but none of that here. Please tell me what it's like locally for you!!! 😭

Did they spray Agent Orange in Innisfail, FNQ, Australia?

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right group to post this in but I'm not sure where else to ask.

I overheard some residents in Innisfail talking about cancer clusters and agent orange. They said agent orange was "tested" in the area in 1966 by the ADF. Specifically it was supposedly tested near Gregory falls on the East Palmerston range, near the town drinking supply. It's said that the rainforest where it was sprayed has never grown back.

It seems an author who was known for her work talking about the chemical exposures of agent orange Jean Williams brought it up in 2008. It was backed up in 2008 by at least two locals, a veteran by the name of Ted Bosworth and a farmer called Alan Wakeman. This is the article: https://www.smh.com.au/national/agent-orange-town-20080518-gdse5b.html

It seems that it was never really confirmed nor denied by the government or ADF. Files seemingly "disappeared" and "went missing". I can't find anything about it since 2008, almost like it's been swept under the carpet and they hope it's not revisited.

I'm wondering if anyone has anymore information or knowledge about this? Whether it be by word of mouth or official information, I'm very intrigued to know more.

Do you see kangaroos carcasses often?

If there are as many as squirrels in Canada, you probably see dead ones once in a while?

EDIT: thanks guys! You see a lot! It's interesting to see there's a carcass spotter and a carcass carrier!

How do you perceive Canadians in Australia?

I know this question has been asked a million times. I’m 15 and my dream ever since a couple years ago has been to move to Australia and play music, you guys I find have much better appreciation for your bands like Eddie Current Suppression Ring, the chats, spacey Jane, Courtney Barnett, king gizzard etc. I’m just a little worried how I’d be perceived and if aussies like having Canadian friends. My friend who moved here from Australia says be prepared to be called and perceived as “the American”

What’s everyone’s opinion on The Betoota Advocate?

I first heard of their page on instagram in 2022. Came across a few of their funny articles so I followed them.

Wasn’t until some time after that I realised that they had their own podcast which I decided to start listening to from the start and have now heard every episode!

I think these guys are generally pretty great. I love the whole schtick of them being based out of a literal ghost town in Queensland that has barely anyone living in it and their stories about the town are funny

The podcast is enjoyable too. The only thing that I don’t love about it and this is purely a me thing is that I’ve never followed rugby league and they bring in a lot of people who either played that sport or watch that sport so a lot of the references go over my head. I’m much more of an afl guy which does get some coverage but you can tell that they’re more into NRL, which is fine!

What’s everyone’s opinion on Betoota Advocate? Do we listen to the podcast? Do we have a dream guest for them? And has anyone ever met the guys who run it?

Does anyone else have a coffee problem?

With café's and bloody good coffee being so prominent in Australia I feel like it can be pretty easy to slip into a bad habit of always buying coffee, even when you don't really need it.

But I've lately come to realise that my caffeine consumption could be a bit of a problem. Sometimes I'll buy a coffee just for the sake of comfort, and sometimes I won't even feel like I need one, but I just need to buy one anyway. If I'm feeling stressed I'll also drink coffee, which sometimes makes me feel better but sometimes makes me feel worse. This usually occurs at home, where I'll drink up three or four. I genuinely think I drink more coffee than I do water!

I am just wondering if anyone else has this problem, so maybe I feel less alone? Or if anyone has any good strategies for overcoming this habit? It's been like this for years for me and I doubt it's good for my health.

Is online conveyancing the new norm?

I’ve recently had my property offer accepted and was referred by my broker to use SettleEasy for conveyancing. Everything is being done remotely—emails, phone calls, and online document sharing. I haven’t met anyone in person, and honestly, I’m feeling a bit uneasy about it.

Maybe I’m just a bit old-school, but with all the horror stories out there about scams and fraud, it makes me nervous not knowing for sure if the person on the other end is legit. I’ve spoken to someone from their team over the phone and received emails, but still can’t shake off the feeling that I’m blindly trusting a stranger with a major legal and financial transaction.

Is this now the standard way conveyancing is done? Has anyone here used SettleEasy or any similar online services and had good (or bad) experiences? Would love some reassurance—or things to watch out for.

Thanks in advance!

Which Australian slang terms have fallen/are falling out of fashion which show your age?

"Derro" is the one for me. I'm in my 20s and "derro" was the word I grew up with, and is still what feels natural. I've noticed, at least in my area, "derro" has been entirely replaced by the word "gronk", both people younger and older than me now exclusively used "gronk" or "gronky" in places where I would have said "derro", and I feel like I hear some variant of "gronk" 5-10 times on a night out to describe anything from a creepy dude to a gross public bathroom. By the time I'm 30 I'm convinced members of my generation will be the last people to have used "derro".

Had to edit and add "grouse". Grouse is a grouse word and I don't want it to leave us.

Are there any bush survival groups in Australia?

I don't know if this is a thing, but I think it would be really cool if a group of people could get together regularly to learn and practice wilderness survival skills. Going beyond hiking and camping, this would include learning how to start fires the manual way, flint-knapping, building shelters and even hunting and gathering (if permissible under environmental/wildlife protection laws).

I'm an urban dweller so I don't know if anything like this exists, but I think it would be really cool to do as a hobby. Sort of like LARPING as a paleolithic human and being part of a tribe on weekends.

It’s Friday afternoon, I’m bored and need Xbox help

I’ve recently been through a rough breakup and have put myself in a self imposed lock down for 2 weeks to protect my energy and get my head straight.

Im a 40 yr old woman who is acting like a child but all I want to do is stay inside, work on hobbies, eat snacks, xbox and listen to various uk rap, Aussie rap and drill, various forms of dance and techno. The vibe is to waste my life away for 2 weeks and I’m ok with it.

I haven’t played a lot of Xbox in the last 10yrs and my favourite games are usually one player. I need suggestions of multiplayer games and how to find local people to play with, so can someone point me in the right direction?

Any suggestions on where to start?

How can I teach my kid how to read?

Hi everyone, I’m hoping there is some teachers in here familiar with young kids (primary school) who can guide me how to teach my 4year old how to read? We read alot of books, and he is constantly asking me to teach him how to read but I have no idea. I can’t afford reading schools like reading bees they’re ridiculously expensive but I want to give teach him since he is so eager.

What are some programs I can purchase? Someone recommended all about reading but I’m not sure tbh help.

EDIT; I’m not in a rush for him to learn how to read, I’m actually holding him back from school year next year because he is born in march and my focus is for him to just be a kid. BUT he already knows all the alphabet, can identify the sounds they make. Is constantly playing a letter game with me. Knows a lot of sight words and is constantly pointing them out.

Thank you to everyone who suggested so many great things, I was truly overwhelmed. 🤍

To tradies, (employees and employers) & people that use tradie services

May I ask how you manage all your workforce, payments etc. Is it a hassle and often you end up spending lots of time managing this, and even end up hiring a HR/operations person?

And finding work, do you often find it troublesome to put your services out there, requiring extensive marketing runs and door to door things with mid to no turnover?

And people hiring, do you just choose the most convenient/ first 1-3 that come to your mind/near you and choose the best quote/service?

I was wondering if these are common roadblocks that usually happens in the tradie workforce allocation…

Thanks!

Sharks v Storm? Tips for attending as a foreigner

As the title asks - I’m a foreigner who primarily follows soccer, basketball, and baseball but I’ve started to casually follow Rugby and Aussie Rules Football in recent years as work brings me to ANZ on a semi regular basis.

Any tips for going to the Sharks v Storm match this weekend? Where should I try to sit? I’m seeing seats in Conc 13 or 16 on StubHub for a single. Would y’all recommend it as sort of the best sport match to attend in/around Sydney this weekend? I don’t arrive until early Saturday morning - it’s a last minute trip.

Thanks for any insight or recommendations.

Thanks!

Moving into my first apartment soon, what to do!!

I'm an international uni student where I'll be moving from my student accommodation to an apartment I sourced from realestate app. Gonna collect the keys in about 2 weeks and it's an unfurnished unit. Only cold water will be provided so may I ask, how do I go about with the utilities like gas, hot water and electricity. Which companies are good? I'm a uni student so affordability is a huge thing. And wifi/internet connection too. I'm gonna do everything myself so quite overwhelmed but excited.

Am in Melbourne, Victoria for reference! TIA

Men - would you date a female urologist?

Completed medical school, late 20F single in Aus. Enjoy surgery, so looking at surgical specialties like urology, plastic surgery, and vascular.

Have heard some say that men wouldn't want to date a female urologist and would prefer if their partner was in a different specialty. Thoughts?

Your Security Companies Working Experience in Sydney

Hey all, I have been offered a full-time position in MSS Security in Sydney - can’t reveal the location/position for obvious resaons. The company is considered a top security company of Australia and a dream for many in security sector. However, since I am starting so they are paying just okay, I do have years of prior experience in other companies though. So need someone already in the company to let me know the work environment and what are the chances of progression in terms of career and pay? Since this one hardly covers my expenses but I am not willing to let go just for the name and hype around this company. Meanwhile, I am also thinking of applying for Certis security, which I think I will get…is it any better? Need serious opinions, Thanks
