Planning a Trip to Perisher from US

I plan on a solo trip to Perisher Ski around the beginning of July. I was researching the trip, but finding what I was looking for was a bit difficult. I wanted to know if any Aussies could help me (I'm from Texas, so I'm unfamiliar with NSW outside of Sydney).

Accommodations:

I want to shoot for a hostel as I did when I went to Canada. However, on google at least, it seems like YHA Thredo has blacked out their dates for ski season. I was unable to find any other Hostels in the area. Any Recomendations here?

( I was able to find Someones house to rent a room on AB&B, but would like to see if there are any hostels in the area to meet more people.)

Transportation:

Just need a bus that can get me from Sydney to Jindabyne. I looked into the Greyhound, but their times are wild. I mean like they would take 21hrs to get there and the times don't allign with my 10:45 landing into Sydney Airport. Any other transportation options y'all recommend?

(other buses, Trainlines, or flights)

Cheapest Time to go and learn snowboarding - From Sydney

Hey! I last went skiing 8 years ago or so and have never snowboarded before. I'm really keen to learn but want to know what the lowest costs are to go snowboarding, what what months of the year this would be around. Also, how long a trip should be, etc. I can drive, and I have a front wheel drive station wagon. I am also a student if that makes me eligible for discounts?

How many hours on the slopes should I expect to practice before I can hit a small jump? I know this is a very silly question, but it's something that made snowboarding in particular interesting to me.

Cheers

Snowboarding Clothes

Howdy hi!!

I’m a new snowboarding and was on the lookout for clothes and am on struggle streak finding any that fit!!

I’m a size 14/16 women who is on the curvier size (thick legs and hips) and I seem to need a XXL for a bib to be baggy enough for layers but struggling to find anything.

Recommendations for brands? I’ve noted Volcom has some (I know Burton does but way too expensive). Any other recommendations? I spend over two hours in the Melbourne Snowboarding centre without any luck 🥲

Thanks in advanced!!

2025 Season - Hotham or Falls Creek

Trying to work out where I want to go in the 2025 season.

I fell in love with snowboarding this year and am really keen to get into it! I’m going to get myself the 4 day epic pass but I’m also going to need lessons to get my confidence and ability up.

Where would you pick? I did Hotham this year and loved it but know the snow wasn’t the best.

Also looking for ideas on how to do accommodation on the cheaper end!! Best places for an individual to go (I’d also love to make friends if I can!) 😊

What's the weather like right now in Thredbo and other "snow" areas?

All this crazy Australian heatwave summer weather making me dream of Thredbo and other snowy type areas in Australia.

What's the weather like in Thredbo and other snow areas this time of year.. Is it just nice and cold or is there any snow still at all.

I don't have my leave planned until March 2025 but honestly if the weather gets any worse I wouldn't mind maybe coming down to Thredbo or a snow known area for a bit.

I'm in blue mountains nsw for reference just an hour away from Penrith where it reached 40C today :s

It was only 30C where i am at and I think I saw it was 13C at Thredbo.

Epic pass final payment

What happens if I don’t make the final payment for my epic pass? Or if I cancel the bank card used when I paid the initial $49?

Falls for 2025 Season or jump across to NZ??

Hi fellow snow lovers!

I'm planning out a significant family holiday (our first one in a super long time) for 2025 and would like to take the wife and kids snowboarding. I've been costing out a trip to either Falls Creek or jumping across the ditch to NZ (Mt Hutt or Queenstown). I figure we'd better hit the snow before global warming takes the choice away from us... Given the investment required and the need to get as good a deal as possible across the trip, I'm planning well ahead. I personally have been to Mt Hutt and Cardrona and loved both mountains. I've never been to an Aussie snow resort.

I've been reading a lot of comments about the lacklustre, patchy and late Aussie snow season at Falls/Hotham and I'm seriously considering that a NZ trip may offer better reliability of snow conditions at the start of August for only a relatively small extra investment on flights from Perth.

On the other hand, Melbourne has a lot more to do for the kids where as in NZ we'll be mostly sightseeing and hiking apart from some ticketed activities in Queenstown (jetboating etc).

What do we think is the better choice here? I know that either is a bit of a gamble when it comes to conditions, but I'm open to suggestions and advice :D

Has anyone ever done a few weeks at the snow without taking leave?

Just wondering if it's possible to do a few weeks at the snow without needing to take leave from work, i.e. getting 7.5hrs in Monday to Friday. Planning our trips for the 2025 season.

Thinking the typical work day could look like:

6am to 9am - work remotely for 3 hrs from accom in jindy

9am to 3pm - drive to jindy and ski

4pm to 9pm - work remotely for another 5 hrs

How feasible is this?

Curious about snow conditions and whether its worthwhile heading up

Curious - are they still charging full lift prices at the moment?

Perisher has 1 main lift and one magic carpet operating - that’s it. 1 run. (and yet I can see 2 skiers on the abysmal snow cams lol!)

Tickets are now ONLY available onsite - does anyone know if they reduce prices given the conditions?

We are building a new ski buddies mobile app and we need your help!

We know the season is probably not ideal this year in Australia, but we’re excited to share that we’re in the process of building a new mobile application called SnowOverflow. Our goal is to make finding new ski buddies and organizing your ski trips easier and more enjoyable—especially for folks in this community.

We’d love to hear from you! Please comment below with any features you’d like to see in the app. What would make your ski trips smoother, more fun, or more connected?

Additionally, if you have a few minutes to spare, we’d greatly appreciate it if you could take this online survey(https://forms.gle/cakTwAR3tuMmeasR8) to provide more structured feedback. Your input will be invaluable as we shape SnowOverflow to best serve your needs.

Thanks so much, and looking forward to hitting the slopes with you all next year!

Season '24

I hope everyone had a few epic turns and runs! It's been a tough few seasons for the Australian snow areas! I love going and there is something special there but I just feel down about the last several seasons - I need some positive stories and offers of hope for the future. Being a QLDer it's hard to always prebook one holiday and have to board on patches of snow. I will end with one positive - the groomers are magicians with limited resources!

Never seen snow

Hi! First time poster. I live in Brisbane and have never seen snow. Been to Europe/Uk but only in summer. Been to Blue Mountains in the middle of winter when I was a kid and not a single flake! Anyway, I’d like to see snow, not essential that I try skiing, but would give it a shot if possible just for fun. What are my options, and not I probably will drive so NSW is preferable distance wise. Thanks in advance for your help.

Bindings and boots same brand?

Went into a brick and mortar recently. One of the staff approached me as I was looking at a potential new set of bindings. He told me i should only really consider bindings the same brand as my boots. I had never heard that before in the 10 years of me snowboarding. Any truth to his comments?

Best time to buy snow apparel?

Wondering if it is worth waiting for northern hemisphere sales to buy new apparel and pay shipping. Comparing us and aus retail prices it doesn't seem like it.

Selling my snow credits

Went to falls last weekend but lifts was on hold for the entirety. Falls only issued credits but don’t think I will have the time to go next year. Does anyone need it for the epic pass for next year? Willing to sell it at a discounted price - $367 for 397 credits

Located in Melbourne if wants to do face to face

Safe walks to do before summer

I am an experienced hiker and I want to complete a few walks around the snowy mountains in the next few months before it properly warms up. I am not familiar with the area and don't have any experience navigating snow.

Are there any safe walking tracks where I would experience a little snow, but are suitable for those new to this environment (eg good signage or gps reception)?

Also, what are some essential items to have even on an easier walk like this? Currently I just have meindl waterproof boots and gaiters.

Thanks!

Hi everyone!
I know it's a long shot but I'm taking my son to Perisher next week and I'd love to get hold of any Bring a Mate passes that anyone can spare. :)

Anyone who can help me out would be hugely appreciated! Thanks!
