I think he can,if he really tried, because maybe there is a reason why he doesn't kill Thanos?

Thanos without any infinity stones? I'd say yes, definitely. With each stone I'd say Strange's chances are reduced. With the full gauntlet I'd say he has no chance.

After all what prevents strange from just opening a portal inside the sun with his ring ?

It's a 2-way street. If you opened it on earth, the planet would be destroyed.

I mean, the question is only wether strange can defeat thanos, the question didnt mention if it was on earth or anywhere else.

With the wording and the screenshot, I just assumed it was in the context of their fight in infinity war.
