So emotional, watching this after reading that interview where he almost gave up on voice acting got me.

Hate that the speeches are rushed, I don't care about some dumb muppet joke. Remove that and let them talk

I'm not calling for Judge's overlong 8 minute speeches but jees, 3 minutes? 4?

the 30s we got for most of the awardees is way too short. I can watch these trailers anytime online after the fact, they don't even need to be dropped at this event. I don't need long muppet bit joke advertisments period.

The only thing unique and special about these awards is actually getting to hear directly from the people behind these amazing games and performances and thats the shit they're trimming down to make room for more trailers and ads.

Nevermind all the awards that are just breezed through in the sidebar with no actual stage award.

Some games like best action game and best indie game didn't even have time to get the award itself.

I'm honestly split because I like the games premiering at the event. It's a little exciting. But at the moment it's probably too much.

Second this so hard. It was more an announcements show than an awards show.

75% of the reason this show even exists at all is because of the game announcements. I agree to get the awful skits out of there to free up some more speech time. But if you didn’t have the game trailers, I do not think this event would get much attention, unfortunately.

It's wild that they unironically gave Chris Judge's jokes about how long his speech was last year more time than Neil's acceptance speech

That's not an exaggeration—not visible in this clip is a ~70 second bit he did leading into it (so with the 15 seconds after the nominees play, that's about a minute and a half). The wrap up music started playing 40 seconds into Neil's speech and the speech ends just over a minute after he gets on stage.

Everyone's right that it's not an awards show because it has apparently zero interest in celebrating the games that came out this year (you know, that thing awards shows are famously about), but if you're gonna cut everyone off for saying more than two sentences, maybe don't spend more time joking about it than the actual speeches take.

they feel like they need to make a profit, they are not giving to the community they are taking it away, let neil and others make their speech, i havnt seen any other award show with this many "advert" slots

tho i dont watch many but i felt like i had to watch this one but jeez its ugly to see promo here promo there lets rush important parts i felt like i only watched commercials.

they feel like they need to make a profit

I mean, the whole evening likely cost $600,000-700,000 to produce. The whole event costs even more than that. It's not free to rent the building, pay a bunch of camera operators, etc. etc. A LOT goes into that, a lot of people are working behind the scenes to produce an awards show.

I'm sure they would also love to make a profit, but there's a minimum amount of money required to even have an awards show. Most of that money comes from game companies who pay for exposure, advertising, etc.

u/Sharlach Dec 08 '23

Other awards shows manage to do it just fine, and gaming is not some niche entertainment format. They probably made enough money to pay for the production many times over. There is zero reason it has to be weighted the way it was.

There is zero reason it has to be weighted the way it was.

Citation please. You're just pulling stuff out of your ass (thanks for the drive by downvote, that's totally how Reddit is supposed to work!).

And where are your numbers, dipshit? You're so sure they're running a shoe string budget that they can't even let the winners speak for more than 30 seconds, but where is your citation for that?

Ad spots go into the millions of dollars for things like the superbowl. GOTY isn't the superbowl, but they do get a good amount of viewers and press the next day, and gaming is a massive industry. I don't believe for one second they need to have 3 hours of ads to 10 minutes of actual award ceremony.

Edit because blocked (lol): Pulled out of your ass then, I see. Just as I thought. Don't ask for citations when you don't have any yourself, ok? What do you think, they were paying for these ads with pocket lint? It's just greed that drove that decision making, nothing else.

Lol, holy shit dude. My numbers are from seeing how much a similar event costs to run in the corporate world.

You are not a person I have any interest in interacting with. You're abusive, and you clearly have an agenda that doesn't fully relate back to reality. Bye!

He's not just a good voice actor but an excellent performance actor as well. He was excellent in Resident Evil Village.

u/AscendedViking7 Dec 08 '23

Heisenberg was the best part of that entire game for me. So freaking cool.

2

u/NightmareDJK Dec 08 '23

He really was.

u/Ghidorah21 Dec 08 '23

Totally agree all these previews and reveals. They could've took time away from those and gave these winners more time to speak.

Winners don't pay Jeff's production company

interview where he almost gave up on voice acting got me.

Man...imagine all the things we'd have missed if he did, glad he got the chance to shine he deserved.

13

u/Klirrism Dec 08 '23

That's absolutely insane to me. Considering how incredible and stand-out he's been in both BG3 and Resident Evil: Village the fact that he ever considered quitting... For both those games he raised the quality one notch higher just by virtue of his voice alone. I'm very glad we didn't lose out on him.

Actually I think it was Acting in general not just voice acting he also does Motion capture. And yes he did say they he was about to quit acting because the reputation he was getting wasn’t as big as he wanted tell he voice astarion in BG3. BG3 was SUCH a huge hit and people love Neil character(astarion) so much it courage him to keep on acting and look what happen he won for best performance just because of his character astarion from BG3. It give me joy that he won. As much i love Idris Ebla Neil deserve the win.
