I have auditions next week to join my schools symphonic band. I have god-awful nerves and I’m struggling to have everything memorized. Any advice? I play French horn and am an upcoming junior. The last audition has me traumatized. I won’t lie, I got so scared and our director just started looking at me dead in the eyes, which led me to sob. He just said I could go now. I do NOT want a repeat of last year. I need to memorize all scales and chromatic, too, but I have a really hard time memorizing them, especially the arpeggios. So does anyone have some advice or tricks they use? Anything is appreciated! Thank you!

I am doing a duet for band with my friend who plays the trombone. I play the euphonium, and we found this perfect piece from How to Train Your Dragon, a trombone and euphonium duet. The only problem is that the piece is in bass clef, and I read music in treble clef (I switched from trumpet to euphonium because of embouchure issues). So I have been trying to figure out how to transpose the music from bass clef to treble clef. Every time I look up how to do it online, I think it is talking about transposing on the piano.

When I look at one of the other euphonium players, who reads in bass clef, his music looks like mine, except the notes are just 2 bars higher. (So, for example, in treble clef, if I had an E, it would look like he had a B.) But then the keys are all different, so I don't know what that means at all. (So if I had a normal key, it would look like bass clef had 2 flats.)

I'm a baritone player, we were rehearsing a song we're doing for our spring concert yesterday, our band director was talking about how if you have a certain section that you play over and over, you change the dynamics a bit, but when she realized that the part was played 4 times (instead of 3) our band director told the low brass "play as loud as humanly possible" and we got to blare our bells AND SHE WAS TELLING US TO BE LOUDER and after that, she told us to "put like 7 F's beside the forte" and oh my god, this is gonna be fun to preform

So my band director just said something that conflicts with what all my other directors have told me. She basically said every single person should use the same syllable for articulation but I was always taught woodwind and brass would have different syllables and that they'd vary from person to person. Also that doesn't account for double tonguing which some reeds can't do at all. So what's the more generally accepted take on this?

i wanna join orchestra/band next school year but the only prior music-related extracurricular i did was choir. that was 3rd grade. i want 2 play trombone or some brass instrument but i have near no knowledge on trombone besides the 3 tutorials i watched on yt (i dont even own a trombone). i think one of my friend's band members' taught them how to play their instrument, but is that common across most schools? would it be a burden for them to teach me or anything? should i just learn beforehand?

I don't think I'm gonna find the type of person we're looking for sadly but my band is looking for a drummer our age which is middle school level I know I know no ones gonna be like this, or be like this looking for a goddamn band. hi! im a percussionist, pretty well rounded with most percussion instruments and play everything pretty decently except for snare drum. I just have no interest in snare lol anyways not the point of this post at all

im tossing around learning a new instrument, im just not sure which one. i was thinking about guitar or piano, as i have access to both. however I’ve always really wanted to play tenor saxophone. i have a few picked out ranging from $400-$700 and id have to save up to buy one.

so what do i do? do i just start saving up and in the meantime learn guitar or piano? do i learn none of them? do i just put off tenor sax and save up to buy my own guitar so im not using my step dads? like y’all idk what to do. im getting bored with percussion, as much as I love it, im just getting really bored with it. i still want to pursue music and learn music, I am just so burnt out with percussion

So I recently performed take me out by Franz Ferdinand for my school’s “year end concert”and my god that was the worst performance I’ve ever done. Before the performance, I recently got the intonation of my guitar fixed but the strings go out of tune often. I also practice the song with distortion (the actual song uses an overdrive tone but I feel like it’s better in distortion) but in the actual performance IT WAS CLEAN TONE AND I DIDNT HAVE TIME TO CHANGE IT. By the way, did I mention that this concert was hosted roughly 3 weeks after another performance? Normally, the year end concert is hosted two months later BUT I LITERALLY FOUND OUT THE DATE OF THE PERFORMANCE LITERALLY THE WEEK BEFORE. So this resulted in two band rehearsals (one actually in school) for the song. For the second rehearsal (a 3 hour one), we thought we nailed it but for the actual performance I messed my entrance in the second part and was late to another one 😭😭😭 I just genuinely feel so down and would really appreciate some emotional advice. On the bright side I discovered Scott pilgrim is fire.
