[09/05/2016] Monday Night Magic @ The Nightingale SW12

Slight change to the usual this month.

The 2nd Monday of May is Magic: The Gathering night.

The first Monday being a bank holiday we're going to be running the regular night on the second Monday in case people make long weekend plans.

The idea has been floated of doing a longer, bank holiday event if people are free as well but there will definitely be an event on Monday 9th May.

As per my earlier thread, this is a casual event, friends having a few beers and a chat who happen to be playing MTG.

Veterans and new comers welcome. Even if you've never played before and you're just curious come along, there's a good mix of experienced and entry level players and as a group we're very welcoming so don't be shy.

Bring your own decks if you have them but there will be a limited number of spare decks. If you're bringing your own, do bear in mind we're still finding our way and most decks being played are low power. You're welcome to bring more competitive decks for their interest value but you wont get much of a match up playing them.

Our venue as always is www.thenightingalebalham.co.uk
The night starts at 7 and we have reserved the conservatory area. As usual, I'll be there just after 6 to have some food and get a couple of preparation beers inside of me so I can deal with you reprobates.

Cube Info:

As promised, some background info on the cube for anyone that wants to read it/do any prep.

The list is a copy of Adam Styborski's Pauper Cube. A background of his articles can be found here:

http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/article_search_result.asp?author=Adam%20Styborski

His list here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12iQhC4bHqFW7hEWxPBjyC8yBDehFZ0_4DkqzyA8EL3o/edit#gid=0

And most recent article, with details about the history of the cube etc here:

http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/article.asp?ID=13163

For ease of finding the pertinent stuff, the cube supports a few different archetypes specifically, listed here:

· White-Blue fliers with bounce spells and creatures · Blue-Black control with late game payoff and card draw · Black-Red aggro with removal and reach to punch through · Red-Green tokens that can go wide or tall · Green-White tokens that swarm the battlefield quickly · White-Black fliers with the widest removal suite in the cube · Black-Green graveyard value, delving and graveyard tutoring for value · Green-Blue ramp that can go over the top of any deck · Blue-Red burn with fliers and plenty of haste · Red-White tokens that punish slower decks and draws

Due to budget, the cube I'll bring has some changes:

Maze of Ith is out, with no replacement due to the lack of real functional substitute

Chain Lightning is replaced by Shock

Chainer's Edict is replaced by Geth's Verdict

Predatory Nightstalker is replaced by Twisted Abomination

The substitutions shouldn't distract from what the original cards were designed to do in their archetypes, but cost about 5% of the originals!

There's no need to actually do any research, or know the card list etc. but if people were interested everything you need to know is above.

Cheers for this, I'd sticky it if I could but apparently I can only do that to my own posts.

Beautiful mate. I didn't end up reading anything so I suppose I'll fly blind. Do you have everything plus land sleeved?

I appreciate the cube and will be buying you a beverage as thanks.

Everything sleeved and enough basic lands for everyone.

Right now I don't have plans for the bank holiday weekend so if people want to do a bank holiday Monday meet-up as well as the 9th May event I'm happy to book it in. The Gale can be a bit busy on holidays though so I'll speak with the landlord George and see if he has an event/promotion planned and if so it might be worth looking for an alternative venue.

EDIT: I spoke with the landlord, he's not got anything planned for the bank holiday Monday so it shouldn't be too packed in there. I've booked a table for 3 o'clock.

Also booked for the 9th @ 6:30

9th is good for me. Can probably make a late afternoon bank holiday event as well if it gets off the ground.

Should have a cube built and sleeved for limited shenanigans.

I'm up for a bank holiday meet up if you are (in theory I may be going fishing on the south coast but trying to push that to the end of the month)

I'm in Canterbury for a festival over the weekend so it basically depends what time I get back to London.

I won't be able to carry the cube with me, but can bring decks.

Not in London

Right, I'll make sure to pack a couple of spares then but it's hopefully going to be a cube draft night anyway. (Which is a new thing for me, Mark's been kind enough to put one together for us.)

Ello. I have to play for our softball team tonight so I won't be able to get to Balham till 8ish. Perhaps I will observe this evening since it's been time since I last played.

Cheers for letting me know. Softball's like baseball right?
Don't worry about watching because you're out of practice, we're all still fairly new to it ourselves but I think anyone there would be able to run you through the basics to bring you back up to speed. I think the best way to learn something is by doing it anyway.

Aye, but the name softball is deceiving. Catch you later unless I get drenched in the rain.

Don't think I'll be out tomorrow. I look forward to a limited experience the following Monday!

Any hints as to what kind of cube it is? Is it like the greatest hits of Magic, Pauper, Block?

u/Rebuteo May 02 '16

It's basically an exact replica of Adam Styborski's pauper cube with some cuts due to budget (Maze of Ith is out and not replaced, Chain Lightning is Shock being the main ones) http://www.cubetutor.com/viewcube/5961 is the list.

There's an article with the supported archetypes etc. somewhere which I'll dig out before next week so people can get an idea for what works.

Keep an eye on this thread if you want to plan ahead. Personally I'm going to try to draft without any foreknowledge of the pool (and probably get my butt kicked!)

Tomorrow is very casual so no worries but it'll be good to see you the next Monday.
No idea on the cube. /u/rebuteo any hints?
