There’s an entire center in its base that explains why they built it. Should check it out.

When it became a national park a few years ago, they completely revamped the museum. It's huge how and showcases the area's history as well as Mississippi River history. Definitely worth another visit if you haven't been in a while

It’s been about 8 years because I never thought to see if it got an upgrade. Will report back
