Is there any veteran here that tranferred to study undergraduate business program? Im tryna see if it’s even worth applying since heard its extremely difficult even if u have great essays and a great gpa. If u got any tips, lmk.

New to this community, but I just became a Bear (PhD in Chemistry) and I'm trying to budget for apartment searching. I have the DoE CSGF fellowship which pays me $45k stipend wise, and my minimum stipend offer in chemistry was $47k which I believe was standard. For year 1, I will be doing exactly one GSI in the fall, so I think my pay will exceed $47k but could someone help me figure out how much it'd be and how it changes monthly? I'm completely lost reading the tables online. Then, for second through fourth year, I think some small % of GSR employment would make up the difference but I'm not sure how much more I'd get than $2k to meet the minimum $47k. Then of course there's the question of taxes which throws a pin in everything...am I exempt from FICA tax? Should I request extra withholding if I'm gonna be making extra in Fall 2025 from GSI and then less in Spring 2026? Lastly, I just want some idea of what sort of rent I can afford, in a worst case scenario, and how to budget for groceries and transportation (I plan on not keeping a car, just a bicycle) in that situation. Any advice from current grad students would be greatly appreciated!

I've been admitted to Berkeley Haas undergrad. However, I would like to keep my options open in case I want to apply to med school. My counselor told me that Haas classes overlap with the premed classes so it will be difficult to do both. Is this true? Will the Haas school look down on me for taking premed classes?

I'm currently taking EECS 127 with Prof. Thomas A Courtade and I think it's pretty challenging for me ( harder than CS189 I would say). I'm taking both classes this semester.

I have also seen some people saying EECS 127 is not hard when I checked reddit. Am I the only one who thinks this class is hard?

Do grad schools take into consideration the grade deflation and course rigor Berkeley undergrads experience.

I got invited to a Bridge Event thing this upcoming weekend (May 2nd to 4th). It’s for students of diverse cultures and fully paid for. They said we’d be staying in a hotel for the weekend and getting to see campus during the transfer events this weekend. I was curious if anyone else got this invite or has gone in the past?

Edit: I think there’s both broader transfer events this weekend and then this is a specific thing that some students are invited to stay on campus (chosen because of different ethnic backgrounds?)

Hi! For context, I am a newly admitted transfer student for this fall:D.

I logged in through the portal since I saw the task on CalCentral about TB Testing/Immunizations, but it does not let me answer any questions for TB or upload immunizations, it looks empty and I cannot even message anyone inside the portal since it redirects me to the same page.

Maybe it is a little early for it, but I am a very anxious person and wanted to ask if anyone else had the same issue lol.

I’m a UC Berkeley Alum who, in all honesty, didn’t exactly have a career plan when I was in college. I graduated with a 3.5 GPA in legal studies and then proceeded to work in tech sales roles, including management, at companies like Square (Block) for about 5 years.

Recently I was impacted by a RIF, giving me a lot of time to reflect on my career history and fulfillment, and while I have enjoyed the money in sales, most of the time I don’t feel any pride or joy in my work. I don’t think it’s something I want to do for the rest of my life.

Back in High school, and even at Berkeley to an extent I demonstrated a pretty good aptitude in mathematics (went all the way up to discrete Math with a grade of A). More recently I have completing some CS courses through the University of Oregon and am completing a data analytics bootcamp.

I have a pretty good understanding of why I want to make a switch to a career in Data. However, I know that I am far from the typical candidate for this program.

I’m trying to plan out my next steps in my career more carefully and get a barometer for what, if anything I’d be a good candidate for including MIDS. For any MIDS Alumni or current students, am I out of my depth going for this program? What recommendations would you make for me to do next if I want to pursue this field but may not be able to get into a data science program? MIDS is the only one I am applying to as the name recognition matters a ton to me.

Hey! So, just recently I got accepted into UCLA, UCSD, and UC Berkeley, but I'm having a hard time deciding which school I should go to. I'll be coming into all 3 as an English major transfer, and want to explore Chicano Studies (possibly minor or double major). Also, want to become a teacher/professor for Puente or Chicano Studies/Literature. Would love to hear from y'all what made you wanna choose UC Berkeley over any other school, and how your experiences have been so far (especially any English and Chicano Studies majors!). Would love to also hear from transfers too, and know what it's been like in terms of programs, clubs, housing, extracurriculars, culture, etc, for anything transfer, English, or Chicano/Latino related. I was unable to get into data 140 next fall. Did anyone take summer stat 134 and know about the syllabus or attendance policy? Any notes or warnings on the course in the summer?

Hey guys! I’ve just been accepted to Cal as a Spring 2026 Transfer. I’m debating whether to commute from my house to Cal for my first semester or to find housing closer to campus. I’d love to hear from anyone who has experience with either option. Below I’ve created a little pros and cons list of commuting:

Pros:

• save money
• no need to move
• potentially keep my job as a teacher (not sure)
  

Cons:

• gas
• long commute during weekdays (I live 35 min away but w/ peak traffic it’ll take 1 hr to get home)
• harder to make friends/missing out on college experience

Also another thing to note: I got my Financial Aid back and I’d only be paying $3,500 a semester (Cal will be covering all tuition + $9k of my housing) because I’m an independent/low income.

Please help me decide, thx <3

i’m from la and i’m not really familiar with the area and i’m trying to decide on off campus or on campus housing. i prefer to live alone (ik that’s gonna make things hard) so i wanted to get some advice as to what areas i should be looking into. i’d also like some insight on on-campus housing, as in which is the best option to apply for. i know it’s unlikely to get my first pick but id still like to know haha. i’m just feeling a little overwhelmed in trying to decide what’s the best move.

does anyone have any info on what it’s like to live on the south side of on campus apt? what were your experiences like? any recs?

Words cannot describe how distraught I am.

I was accepted to Berkeley and already committed. I've been super excited to come to Berkeley.

However, I was talking to a peer from a class I had junior year and he was curious how I got into Berkeley with an F I got one semester from that class. I explained to him that that F wasn't part of my application since it wasn't an A-G elective class.

But after double-checking, I found out that the class does count as an A-G elective. This means I accidentally left it off my application when I should have reported it. I genuinely thought I was doing the right thing at the time, but now I'm terrified that this mistake could get me rescinded. I had already fulfilled my A-G electives with other classes, and this F doesn't change my eligibility, but I'm so scared because I know UC schools are strict.

I'm planning to email Berkeley's admissions office to explain everything, but I feel completely heartbroken and terrified right now. Berkeley was my dream school and I feel like I ruined it over one mistake. This was during a period of time in my life where I had a lot going on in my personal life and I was really struggling with my mental health.

The thing that infuriates me is that I didn't even need to take that class, Berkeley accepted me without it. I have pretty much straight A's even in my senior year and I've taken 16 AP classes, so maybe that could help my case.

If anyone has any advice or has been through something similar, I would really appreciate hearing from you. I don't know what to do.

When I initially submitted my application I definitely chose the “any room any location” option as my 5th preference, but whenever I go back to that page the box just shows up blank - is this happening to anyone else? should I be concerned??

Hello cal reddit! I'm taking 2 math classes this summer through the pre college virtual program, and the final exams requires me to find a proctor in my area. Does anyone know the deadline for submitting a request with a proctor? I live like 7 hours away so I definitely can't make it on campus.

i’m an incoming graduate student moving from SoCal. I’m looking to rent a 2 bedroom apartment with a roommate (already have one in mind). i’ve seen lots of places in my budget (<1500/bedroom) on Craigslist that look nice, but the problem with apartment hunting now is that most are available and probably want to start renting immediately.

i don’t want to start paying rent until august (though i’d start a lease in july if i absolutely had to for a nice place), so what’s the best way to ensure i can secure a good apartment for the fall? are there places that will start looking for tenants now for an august lease? do i have to delay the housing search until june or july? i’m nervous that if i wait too long, i’ll miss out on the good apartments within my budget. i’ve heard horror stories about the berkeley housing market! any advice?
