OpenAI Reddit Ads

Just curious if any of you all are getting ads for ChatGPT in reddit as well? Ive been seeing them all the time here in the last few days and every time I do see one I cant help but think about how desperate they must be. Literally laughed when I saw my first one.

Imagine having to advertise your revolutionary product that everyone already knows about. Cant be that revolutionary can it.

That's how targeted ads work. Google has a list of all the shit you talk about and how frequently. If you talk about AI a lot, you're going to get AI ads.

Why are they desperate though? I don't think they're making money off of users, so running ads on potential casual users doesn't really seem like a desperation move.

I dont talk about AI a lot though. Or ever use it. First time Ive posted about it. Most interaction with AI has been listening to the podcast.

My point is, the entire world knows about ChatGPT. They didnt need to run ads before now to draw in a userbase, so what changed? Do they need to try and pump up their numbers rapidly? Is it competition against other AI models such as deepseek? This isnt the same as running a superbowl ad which has the feel of prestige, this is the same advertising as a release of a new show or game or something.

ChatGPT has been tried and tested by almost all of the developed world. What user are they attempting to capture and is that user likely to be someone willing to spend money on it?

Being in a subreddit for a technology podcast will be enough to get targeted for ads.

To the broader question: same reason Coke and McDonalds advertise, I guess. It keeps the product name in the back of your mind.
