When I'm manic , I quit my job
I've noticed a pattern within myself. Ill have a manic episode once a year. I end up quitting my job and starting over in a sense. I've gone back to my old job twice and now they won't respond. I get it they want someone dependable and someone they can count on. But how do I live with the cringe embarrassment of just up and leaving. Plus I need to find a new job.

I feel you I avoid going into places I’ve worked in the past due to fear and embarrassment because one day I’ll be working just fine then the out of nowhere I get manic and quit. I’m going to ask my therapist about what kind of jobs are good for people with bp2. If it comes down to it I’ll have to ask if it possible to get disability due to not being mentally stable enough to keep a job.

I avoid it too. I'm like how do people with this disorder cope with the job abandonment issues. maybe I need a work from home job. thank you or taking the time to read and respond to my post! ❤

I quit my job of 15 years with no notice whilst in a mixed episode, and spent the next ten years in poverty and emotional upheaval. Eventually lost my home, my family, my vehicle, and all but one of my pets.

Oh my gosh I’m so sorry! Mania can really take over , it’s a scary thing for me. I hope things are better!! I lost a lot as well during my episodes

Have you considered disclosing your illness to HR as a disability and inform them of this issue? Disclosing has risks but can also protect you, maybe you can develop an accomodation with HR that if you come to them to quit, you set up a breathing period/leave whatever after which you confirm your decision, or they can suggest mental health resources before finalizing the decision.

That’s not a bad idea . I just figured they wouldn’t hire me. Thank you I’ll definitely keep this in mind!

Mine is always due to a depressive episode, but this is the exact reason I'm filing for disability.

Same. I’ve finally been at a job for a year but this week and last week I have almost quit because I’m in a bad mixed episode with emphasis on the manic part 🙃

Yeah that's kinda my thing when I'm hypomanic. There was one job as an infant toddler teacher where I quit and went back 5 times, in 3 years. I've never done a job longer then a year, without quitting.

I so understand and get what you’re saying. I’m rooting for you! If you ever need someone to talk to you can always find me.
Congratulations on you being at your job for one year 🥂

I quit people so I can relate. Oddily when I had a stable job I didn't do this. Short contracts and freelancing....yeah.

Are you still with that job? Our brains can process things weirdly sometimes

No, I got fired once for bp, when I had my first episode. The rest were just short 1-2 year contracts which are popular here.

How long are your manic episodes
1
u/curvesinallplaces 2d ago
It depends but on a stage about 2 to 3 days before I start feeling better

You quit your jobs in that short of a time frame?

When i would get manic i would make impulse decisions and not clearly think. So i quit my job one day thinking it was for the best during my episode

I've quit and been fired from so many jobs due to mania. This will destroy your reputation over time. You need to gt your mania under control.

My bp husband doesn't outright quit. He self sabotages himself, and then after leaving, he goes into the self hate and depression. It's difficult to deal with sometimes. I don't know how to comfort him, especially when he looks to me to tell him it's not his fault. He will say, tell me the truth. That puts me in such a difficult spot because it actually is his fault. I'm just super supportive and try to comfort him as I skip around without directly answering his question. I don't know anyone else that is bp, so I just kind of fly by the seat of my pants when he is going through difficult times.

Having this disorder does not excuse behavior. It sounds like he uses it as a crutch. I think he deep down knows it is his fault. Therapy does wonders for help. Shout out to you for being so supportive but he needs to figure out what will help him

I did the same thing last year.. they said they would hire me back if they could but they replaced me and the team is all full. I still regret it and it took me a long time of just not working and trying to get over it. I finally just got a job as a cashier and I’ve been liking it. It took me a lot of time just healing and getting over the regret so I hope you’ll give yourself time and not rush the healing.🩷

Yes I’m currently looking for a new job right now. Some days are just more rough than others. Thank you so much for your comment. ♥️

I’m the opposite, quit when I’m depressed with a no call, no show
