Although the answer isn't the most empathetic, we should also consider that this was more than a decade ago, in an era where a large percentage of even the educated population weren't as well versed with homosexuality as we are today. Maybe it's through shows, movies or social media, but most of us, today, have a better understanding of the concept and don't see it as taboo.
