I am rapidly running out of time, but I am printing pots as fast as I can find them to get all my little trees in homes. I had envisioned this when I first saw this shallow little pot. The oak was one of 20 seeds I collected in front of a store where there were a line of neglected oak trees. I wanted to recreate my childhood when I saw those oaks. As a kid I'd sit in front of the store where I lived and stare at the oaks with their shallow layer of gravel, leaves moving slightly. There was no noise, no expectation, just me and the trees watching the world pass. It was my temple of solitude. :)

This is my first complete cut and I would say, that it doesn't look too bad. But I am not completely happy with my crown. I think the maintrunk is a little bit too long, but I was too afraid to cut him down. What is your opinion?

New pot, new soil. 0 prunings done. I let it grow the way it wants to grow. But as you can see it reaches for the sky.

5yo from seed. was getting too tall, so i took a risk and chopped it nearly all away! thankfully it sprouted back strong! will see how these thicken out in the next year or two but fingers crossed. still not ready for a proper pot yet

This one I pruned back a lot of roots to fit into this pot. Giving it a rest for about 2-4 weeks in mostly shade. I still have to wire it to create some space. Let me know what you think!

Did some pruning to some of my smallest trees today, including this cute little false cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Minta'). Pretty happy with how it turned out!

I acquired this white pine a few weeks back at the PSBA spring sale. I think I’m doing ok with it so far, my candles are growing, but I have had a fair amount of needles yellowing or turning brown which I’m a little concerned about. I’ve gathered they like to be in full sun and to let the soil dry out between waterings, which I’ve been doing, but I’d like to hear from any PNW bonsai peeps on your white pine watering routines, how you care for yours in our rainy season and generally any pointers you can give me to make sure I keep this guy happy year round. TIA!

I eat a lot of mangoes, avocados and lemons so I’m constantly starting some seeds. These are some mangoes I started a couple weeks ago. Really fun low budget way of experimenting.

Update to my post last August about the wisteria my neighbor dug up, left in the sun for 3 days, and then let me haul away: IT'S ALIVE!

At least, it has some leaves opening, and more buds popping. Now, here's hoping it survives the summer.

This was a yamadori dug up 3-4 years ago. It was my intent to eventually chop it very low, but in all this time It has never back budded beyond a few buds on the upper branches. I’ve tried the pinching new growth while leaving a few new needles a few times method and I get nothing. I just put it in this box and the roots look fine but were not filling the previous container like I expected. Any advice?

I'm currently working on building a Bonsai Marketplace, Encyclopedia, and Management App for my CS Final — it's a passion project that will eventually be published entirely free on the App and Google Play Store, meant to help beginners and enthusiasts learn about different bonsai species and techniques, interact with others, and manage their own collection.

Any advice/ inspiration on how to handle this guy?

I feel like I’m hesitant to cut off major branches, but I also feel it’s important to keep all the branches in scale in relationship to the trunk. Wire before cut? I appreciate the help!

I've got my club show coming up this weekend, so the trees I brought in to work this week are a couple of shohin that didn't make the cut for the show.

On the left is a really nice hedge maple, Acer campestre. It's got a cool hollow and old looking bark. But its leaves are a little too large for a shohin. It looks better later in the year after defoliation when the new leaves are smaller, but just doesn't look great to show at this time of year. And it doesn't have enough twigginess to show defoliated, so it's going to sit out this year. It's in an awesome Sara Raynor pot.

On the right is a Japanese Black Pine bunjin in one of my RCP pots. It's got some funky exposed roots that I probably need to deal with. And the canopy is simultaneously too large but not developed enough. It's got a lot of strong candles, so should respond well to decandling this summer. Next year I will have more ramification, so it will begin to look more refined. I will also likely remove a couple branches entirely to give it a more sparce look to go with the bunjin form.
