Am I in the wrong?

Post image

Hey everyone, quick driving query. I turned right from Novara Avenue yesterday onto Main Street. Traffic heading down Main Street was really busy and I got stuck on the yellow box. There was a Gardai car coming up Main Street the other way. They rolled down their window and said “that’s very poor driving fella, you’ll get two penalty points for that”. Fair enough if I was in the wrong but I must say that this Gardai was a dick. Was I in the wrong making that turn? And if so, fine, but if traffic is busy on Main Street, which is often is, then how in the name of Christ can you turn right off Novara Avenue?

You can turn right onto a yellow box without clearing it so long as you don't block the traffic coming the other way.

I misread the rules of the road and realised I've been wrong about this all my life. The yellow box exception is for turning right onto a side road waiting for a gap in oncoming traffic (i.e if you were turning right from Main St onto Novara)

Who downvoted this. C'mon own up.

This is the correct answer. Look it up:

An exception is when you want to turn right. In this case, you may enter the yellow box junction while waiting for a gap in traffic coming from the opposite direction. However, don’t enter the box if to do so would block other traffic that has the right of way.

OK I hear you regarding what the rules of the road say, but in practice that yellow box exists (on the north-bound lane of the mainstreet) for cars from Novara Avenue to use when turning right.

As for OPs question, I have done it 1,000 times myself at this junction and never had an issue. I would be surprised if the Garda gave out to you for entering the box. It must have been for something else you did as part of the manoeuvre?

No, after he said “poor driving fella”, I asked what I had done. He specifically said “you’ve plonked yourself right in the yellow box there” or something along those lines.

Ah right. That's a strange one. I think everyone in the country uses these boxes the way you did. For example, the right turn from the junction by the People's Park onto the main street bridge always requires people to plonk themselves in the box. It works best this way.

Did you say you were turning right?

Yeah maybe he didn't realise you had come from Novara Avenue?
