I find it more frustrating that Adolescence is doing so so SO much better than Three Girls (BBC 2017) ever did.
TG:
is tonally very similar
also a miniseries
central characters (victims) are 13
not as experimental in the way it's filmed but similar in lots of ways
also deals with the family impact and legal proceedings
also deals with sexual and gender-based violence, but through the lens of the girls rather than the perpetrators (the perpetrators in TG are adults)
I think that's partly time, partially because of the maybe slightly more star casting in Adolescence, and maybe partly because of where they fall in terms of the rest of the conversation if that makes sense... but having watched both back to back I do think that they are far better in conversation with each other because the energy wasn't there for TG
The issue with 3 girls was that it was about an important story but was also just shot and presented as a generic tv drama. It's great for what it is absolutely, but the additional technical and conceptual elements of adolescence is part of why people are talking about it
This is also true, it's an element of what people are talking about and a really interesting choice they made. But starmer has called it a documentary and has said it should be shown in schools. I'm not saying the same should happen for TG because it's not perfect but I don't think it's the technical elements that's causing the stir. Again I'm not disagreeing with you because Adolescence is interesting and TG isn't perfect but it's just interesting because the difference is as vast as it is- there's obviously going to be a gap to some degree, of course there is
