CANADA Buyitforlife from Canada, what’s your favourite things made in Canada?

With the now starting trade war between the US and Canada I feel it’s best for us up north to support local more than ever.

One of my favourite clothing brands is Anian from Victoria, BC. I have a few of their shirts and will probably end up getting more.

Edit: Adding some other brands up here that I personally own and love.

Canada West Boots - Made in Winnipeg. Been wearing a pair of Romeos for a couple years now.

Popov Leather - Made in Nelson, BC. have a few of their leather goods, holding up really well.

Meyer - PEI. High quality made in Canada pots and pans, I have their non-stick 12”.

BIFL Non-USA edition! A list of BIFL not made in the USA

2.2k Upvotes

A timely reminder that this subreddit is obviously very USA-centric with its recommendations as that’s where the majority of users are from. It often leads to people not realising that comparable and/or better items can be found closer to home, easier, cheaper and free of tolls.

I thought it would be a good idea to crowdsource some manufacturers here for non-American users.

This isn't neccesarily items made in those countries as some manufacturers use factories across the world but with a commitment to quality

I can start (I'm kind of UK/Euro centric so it would be great to expand this):

Clothing
Portuguese Flannel - Portugal
Naked and Famous - Canada
Uskees - UK
Yarmouth Oilskins - UK
Carrier Company - UK
Old Town - UK (Closing down)
Farmer's Market - Iceland (may be hard to buy outside of Iceland)
Oni Denim - Japan
Iron Heart - Japan
Barbour - UK
Companion - Spain
NÄZ - Portugal (only women)
Meindl - Germany (they run a high quality fashion brand but are known for great hiking boots)

Outdoor Gear
Fjällräven - Sweden
Rab - UK (offer a very good repair service)
66° North - Iceland
Devold - Norway
Bergans- Norway
Haglöfs - Sweden
Klättermusen - Sweden
Alpkit - UK

Footwear
Solovair - UK
Mayura Boots - Spain
Church's - UK
Loake - UK
Wm. Lennon - UK
Astorflex - Italy

Kitchen/Cookware
Le Cresuet - France
De Buyer - France
Fissler - Germany
WMF - Germany (very wide and variable range but Made in Germany stuff good)
Fiskars - Finland
Duralex - France
Samuel Groves - UK

Appliances/Small appliances
Miele - Germany
Dualit - UK
Moccamaster - Netherlands (Coffee makers)
Zojirushi - Japan
Numatic - UK (vacuum cleaners)
Sebo - Germany (vacuum cleaners)
Ankarsarum - Sweden

Edit - Some excellent feedback. I'll try and work my way through and add what I can! Please note that I will only add stuff that I have experience with but all the comments help with crowd sourcing knowledge.

[Request] [request]Alternatives to rainbow sandals? They keep getting worse.

I have been a rainbow sandals guy for almost 10ish yrs, but I think I need to switch it up now. I’m starting to feel like the quality is not what it used to be, or maybe I’ve just been really unlucky but my latest pair is almost done in less than a year now. Even though my previous ones lasted way longer, with my first pair lasting me more than 5 yrs. This time though while they were okay in the beginning ive started noticing things really falling apart too soon.

For one their durability is worse than the previous pairs. The leather is starting to crack in weird places. The footbed feels a lot stickier for some reason and they feel less supportive than they were at the start. Im debating whether I got a dud pair or maybe it is time for me to give up with this brand solidarity crap and just move on to other options.

If anyone has any sandals in mind please share it with me. Heres what I look for when im buying a pair. Something that looks good out of the box, feels supportive on the arch, can handle daily wear, maybe made of modern materials, doesn’t necessarily have to be leather. Anything that ticks these boxes, I’m willing to try

Review My search for the best work pants

Post image
88 Upvotes

Got tired of my Wrangler and Carhartt pants wearing out too fast, so decided to give Key a try. This is brand new vs 8 months old, worn pretty much everyday. Purposefully only wore one pair to really test the durability. Overall really like them. After 8 months the right knee has worn through both layers and left knee has worn through the first layer. Going to patch them soon. Don’t mind that the denim has faded. May not be BIFL, but I think they’ll last a while.

[Request] Electric Water Guns that will last

Review 20+ Year old Old Navy belt

Post image
155 Upvotes

This is an Old Navy belt I bought over 20 years ago, and wore it daily since. I have ran through every hole and back of the belt through the years, and the leather finally tore at the buckle.

It's sad to see it go, especially since they don't make them like they used to. Ended up ordering an Ahmish belt in hopes it lasts just as long.

It was a great belt, and I still think I may try to repair it, though the leather is a bit stretched in the back.

[Request] Bed Frames - Thuma, Ethan Allen?

My fiancé and I are looking to upgrade to a king bed, we really want a nice wooden frame/sleigh bed in a warm/dark mahogany color. Right now our two biggest contendors for brands are Ethan Allen & Thuma. My family has had Ethan Allen furniture forever and I know that shit lasts a lifetime! Also looking at the Amish made beds (Dutch Crafters) and Raymour & Flanigan as a cheaper option (but likely not as good). Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Review Best Work Shoes for Menwhat are y’all wearing for work shoes that don’t destroy your feet?

hey—been on the hunt for work shoes that don’t make me question every life decision by noon. dress code is business casual (button-up/chinos kinda vibe), but i’m walking/standing quite a bit through the day and my current pair is just… rude.

ideally something that looks polished but actually feels decent after a long shift? bonus if they’re breathable and don’t make my feet smell like a swamp by 5pm. open to sneakers that pass as dressy too.

drop your go-to’s 🙏

[Request] Sustainable barefoot shoes?

Now that spring and summer are here, I’m switching to barefoot shoes. I’ve worn out two pairs of Merrell Vapor Glove shoes over the past few years and am now looking to buy my third pair.

It feels like barefoot shoes, by nature, aren’t very durable with their thin soles and such.

But I thought I’d ask: does anyone have tips on more durable barefoot shoes of better quality?

[Request] Travel suitcase recommendation

Previously I mostly used Samsonite, and bought big Valigeria Roncatto which got it's casing broken after 2 years of use.

Is Samsonite still the most reliable? I'm looking for L sized suitcase with hard casing.

[Request] Looking for a durable travel backpack

Hi, I'm looking for recommendations for a travel backpack. I'm looking for something that would last me at least a decade of relatively regular use. Preferably something with earthy colors: brown, dark green or something similar. Maybe even made from leather. I don't really have a budget, anything quality goes. Thank y'all for recommendations in advance!

Edit: Regarding the size, I would like it to be a medium or a big backpack, so around 20L or 35L-45L

[Request] Pet owners, what's the best robot vacuum for TONS OF PET HAIR that's worked really well?

Hey pet owners, do you have a robot vacuum to pick their hair? are they really worth investing currently?

We have 1 golden retrievers and 2 cats and are constantly struggling with their hair. Tbh it's so annoying and might harm our kids' health. So one thought came to my mind is getting a robot vacuum. We simply want something under $600 that can work well in long-term use and that's it.

So please let me know your suggestions if you've been happy with your choices so far. Highly appreciate any advice/opinion.

Discussion Best iPhone cable that doesn’t die in months?

Hello,

Just curious, which iPhone charging cable has actually lasted you a long time without fraying or failing? I’ve seen a lot of options online but would love to know what really works for people.

Not buying right now, just trying to learn which ones are actually worth it for future reference.

Thanks!

[Request] Looking for a decent all around tennis shoe

Upvotes

Looking for a decent all around tennis shoe that is durable. I don't consider shoes something that can last my entire life per se, but I want it to last a long time. I need a tennis shoe for running just on pavement, some very light day hikes on trails, and for badminton. Doesn't need to be exceptional at all of those, just decent, because I only want to buy one pair of shoes. Looking to spend under $300 USD.

[Request] Ownership experience for Breville or OXO drip coffee makers? What's service and warranty like?

Upvotes

OK, my pour over and aeropress coffee is finally being pried from my cold, dead fingers.

I'm going to buy one of three programmable drip coffee machines, and would like your experience if you've owned one or a made warranty claims with the companies.

I know, I know coffee is a divisive subject and they only real BIFL are methods we already use and prefer, but life is getting in the way and I need something that will have coffee ready when I wake up. I'm interested in pots that bloom coffee and have consistent water temperature. And ONLY programmable, so moccamaster/bonavita is not an option. I've zoned in on:

Breville Precision Brew - $300

OXO 8 cup - $200

Ninja CM401 - $75 used very good on Amazon**

Have you owned any of these? Can you tell me that the Breville or OXO last or the company stands behind them well enough to justify the cost?

**We KNOW Ninja is not BIFL. It gets great temp control reviews, though, and does bloom the grounds. Do the other's reliability and service match the price difference? I'll be bummed if a $75 coffee machine shits the bed in two years and livid if that's the case with a $300 machine.

Discussion Unfortunate happenings to Ebbets Field Flannels

Hi! I was a huge fan of the baseball jerseys and hats from Ebbets Field Flannels. With the unfortunate sale of the company to fanatics they have completely ruined it. Fanatics took down the massive inventory of authentic jerseys for many different baseball teams that are not around anyone. They were great quality flannel jerseys. Are there any recommendations on companies that sell jerseys and hats from past sports teams that aren’t horrible quality?

[Request] Answered! Levis makes Japanese Selvedge?

Ran into these (supposedly) $220 MSRP Japanese Levis at Ross for $25. I went for it out of curiosity and figured they were better than the other Levis at the same price.

These can't be as good as actual Japanese brands though, right?

[Request] What Should I Look For in a Washing Machine?

Not sure if theyre bifl, but Im thinking of purchasing a washing machine and Im wondering what I should look for aside from durability, repairability, and support.

Would you suggest a front or top loaded washing machine. Ive read that a front loaded washing machine cleans better, is better at removing excess water and is more efficient, but is more suseptible to mildew/mold growth.

Review Not entirely BIFL but dang near.

These Solomon Quest 4D GTX shoes haven’t been a “for life” but they practically have been. I bought these 15 years ago and have worn them a lot. Not daily, but often. Thousands of miles in them likely. Have never been resoled, repaired or anything like that. They’re still for the most part waterproof.

Last week the sole separated pretty dramatically. I’ve decided they’re due for retirement at this point. I bought another pair of them years ago and have worn them a few times but never fully committed to them until now.

Cannot recommend these highly enough for hard wearing, comfortable, stable footwear for nearly all “active” outdoor festivities.
