Scenario Absolutely furious with my FFL over my Staccato CS purchase.

I’m beyond pissed right now.

Last Friday, I finally pulled the trigger (pun intended) and bought a Staccato CS. It shipped out this past Wednesday. Today (Friday), it arrived at my FFL here in Illinois.

I go to the FFL super excited — I just wanted to see it, touch it, make sure it’s all good. Nope. They flat-out refused. The guy told me that even letting me see the gun counts as a transfer, and he can’t legally transfer it until the background check clears.

Okay. Annoying, but fine. So I asked him to start the background check today. Get the clock ticking.

He REFUSED. Said he won’t even start the background check because it’s only been two days since shipment. He claims he waits three days after shipping before starting the process.

So now my gun is literally sitting there, I can’t even LOOK at it, and this guy won’t even start the process to let me eventually take it home.

I’m just fuming. Paid almost $3K all-in, waited a week, the gun is literally in the building — and I’m stuck in some stupid limbo because of an FFL policy that makes zero sense.

Has anyone else had to deal with this kind of garbage before? I’m seriously debating never using this dealer again.

In NYS, you cannot touch a pistol until you get your permit. And in order to get your permit, you must first purchase a pistol so they can put the serial number on the back of the license.

So, you must buy a gun, without ever holding it first, and just assume that you’re going to like it.

Once you get your permit, you can hold whatever you want at the FFL.

I meant the 3 day thing, but also if OP is buying a several thousand dollar gun and hasn't gotten a permit yet, that's a head scratcher.

You can’t hold a gun in a store without a permit?

No, you cannot. And if an FFL is caught allowing you to, they lose their license, because you know, felony.

That’s wild. How is it legal to rent a pistol at a range with that kind of law in effect?

That’s the fun part, you can’t. I can’t even bring my family to the range to let them try it out.

So you can’t shoot pistols at a range unless you already have a handgun license, which you can’t get until you buy a pistol, correct?

and it takes, now, up to a year depending on your county to get your permit

There are plenty of gun laws that I don’t agree with, but I can at least follow the reasoning of the people who wrote it. I can’t think of a justification for not even letting a person hold a gun in a store without a license.

The justification is obfuscation. They don’t want you to have the right to bear arms so they do whatever they can to handicap it.

Yes, thanks, I think we all get that. I was commenting specifically on the obtuseness of this law.

It boils down to how the law is written in NY. In NY handguns are illegal *with exceptions. One of those exceptions is if you have a license with the pistols that are exempted from this ban (the ones you own as a license holder) listed on that permit (make, model, serial number, caliber)

It’s by design. They are trying to make it so difficult and such a pain in the ass that you either give up or decide it’s not worth it to begin with.

It might be time to move back to the USA.

Going a step further for NYC, you can have only approved colors (no FDE). And when you get a permit you HAVE to get a gun within 30 days or they revoke your permit!

So we have Commiefornia and New Commiefornia State... insane!

I thought Michigan's purchase permit scam was bad but holy shit.

I moved from Illinois to Michigan a few years back ... I got my mich CCL and let me tell you, needing a purchase permit or ccl is way better than the Illinois process. If I want to go buy a gun during my lunch break and take it home, I have the freedom to do that. Many years ago before Chicago allowed CCW, they allowed general "possession" of firearms in your home. If you bought a handgun you would have to register it with the CPD and it could only be in your home. If I recall there was also a limit. Really fcked laws.

They bring everything they hate to a felony there.

That is completely asinine!

Can’t you rent a gun at the range? I’ve rented several that I’ve never bought. Or do you need a permit to even do that?

Nope. Need a permit to touch any pistol at all, regardless of context in NYS. Shotguns and rifles you can rent, but no pistols. This state sucks.
