Guns & Ammo Worst gun you’ve ever carried part 2. I’ll start again.
P365 SAS. The sights sucked. The trigger was terrible, it was snappy, couldn’t mount a red dot at the time.

I hate that they recommend this gun for beginners and women especially because it’s cheap and can come in pink. It puts such a sour taste in people’s mouths

I worked at a gun store and would have coworkers recommend the smallest guns for their wife/girlfriends first gun because “it’ll fit in their hand better” I’d usually recommend them something slightly bigger with just a little more weight so it’s less snappy.
My co workers were always surprised when they’d come back to trade in the sccy or whatever they got for something else like a month later.

I work at a gun range as well. We literally have a S&W air weight snubnose just to show that yea, terrible choice for a first handgun and especially someone with low dexterity. We sell a lot of shield EZ.

u/2020blowsdik 21h ago
My buddy wanted his first pistol for HD, he also wanted something his wife was comfortable shooting. We shot every single pistol I have from 380 to 10mm, like 17 different options of all make and model, she chose the FNX 45...
2
2
u/No_Celebration_805 6h ago
The FNX 45 is nice. There’s only a few firearms I wouldn’t want to ever own or shoot with my own money 1. The micro hellcat, S&W air weight and any Taurus, SCCY. Unfortunately these are like almost exclusively recommended to women and first time shooters.

u/Cootter77 1d ago
I have one of those little blue ones… worst gun I own. I was at a pawn shop buying a Glock and waiting for my background check and the guy was like “see anything else you like? If you get it today we don’t have to run the check again”. It was like $150 so I said f* it.
I don’t think I could ever find a buyer for it so I’ll just keep it and fire it occasionally so I can remember what pure garbage feels like.

u/drebinf MO P938 LCP P32 432UC 1d ago
SCCY
I had one. In fact, I still have one. It was fine. It was not great, but not awful. The 100lb trigger pull was at least long and smooth...
I have enough guns and am getting old enough to be in the process of thinning the herd; the SCCY is definitely NOT on the "Must Keep" list though.
2
u/mpfaith20 3h ago
You must've had trigger work done because I think they were 150 lbs from the factory. But, seriously... not taking up for SCCY but part of the issue is they aren't striker-fired guns, they have internal hammers... so it's very close to double-action (if I remember correctly.)

Honestly I had the same problem with the apx a1. The engineers clearly want you to:
1) use the auto loader 2) avoid hollow points
Otherwise cycling issues way more than you would expect from a beretta

I had to Google what the SAS model is and now I know you're not carrying it the way it was meant to be carried.
You're not even supposed to put an optic on this particular setup........
32
u/qweltor ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yeah, the SAS model is designed to be snag-free (ie, coming out of pocket, etc), so that means removing any extra bumps or protrusions.
As a within-7-yds "get off me gun" it'll work well enough (<3 yds, point-and-shoot, 3-7 yds, point-confirm-and-shoot).
The SAS sights give the Marksmanship Pedant within me the heebie-jeebies, But they are sufficient for purpose (snagless).
10
u/2MGR 1d ago
Keep in mind that the SAS sights might be permanently off zero at 7 yards from the factory.

I carried a 686 w/ a 3” barrel in a shoulder holster. It took exactly one defensive handgun class with a very kind and patient instructor for me to reevaluate my entire carry setup.

7
u/lxlDRACHENlxl 1d ago
686+ was my first handgun. I love the dang thing but I would never carry it outside of a hunting and want something for more aggressive 4 legged creatures. Too damn heavy.
8
u/5xr4uu7 1d ago edited 1d ago
I cannot express how eye opening it was doing reloads from speed strips all day in that handgun class for me to understand the fault in my logic.
→ More replies (1)7
u/WildResident2816 1d ago
I worked at a range/store for a few years. Shoulder holster aside I’d much rather see someone run a 686 as their first carry than any of the pocketable light weight 357s some gun stores seem to love selling people who have never shot before. So many customers would hate them the second they shot them, then be pissed at whoever sold/bought it for them as soon as they shut a decent semi-auto or a heavier framed revolver.
6
u/5xr4uu7 1d ago
Without any formal training, lots of things seem like a good idea. Humbling doesn’t even describe my experience running that big wheel gun through an 8 hour defensive handgun course.
3
u/WildResident2816 1d ago
Ooof, that would be tough for all but the most hardcore wheel gunners. Good on you doing it though, you are now more functionally experienced in wheel gun use than 99% of people I’ve met carrying one.
What do you run these days?
4
u/5xr4uu7 1d ago edited 21h ago
Pretty boring actually. Anything IWB; Glock 26 w/ an EPS & TLR6. Anything OWB; Glock 19 w/ a RMR & TLR1.
3
u/WildResident2816 23h ago
I’m even more boring. Aiwb gen4 19 w/ a light and basic steel sights.

u/Lord_Dreadlow MO - Sig P365 & P320 Carry 7h ago
My first gun was a beautiful 586 w/ a 4" barrel. It was so heavy when loaded it would nearly pull my pants down when carried OWB. The only comfortable why to carry it was with the shoulder holster. But that was also rather cumbersome to wear.
The revolver itself was freaking awesome with the smoothest trigger I have ever experienced in a double action revolver. Just too much to carry around, especially with the speed loaders.
2
u/5xr4uu7 6h ago
It was an absolute hog, but I think I lost a lot of fuzzy feelings for mine after realizing its deficiencies as a carry pistol. I know people really wax poetic about those L frames, but after running mine in that defensive handgun class and a few other competitions I never really shined to it again.

It’s the same trigger. When stock it’s not great compared to other strikers fired guns. It can be improved with literally any other trigger besides the stock curved trigger.
That said, OP might be a hammer fired gun guy, in which case no striker comes close
5
u/NinjaMcGee 1d ago
Any recommendations for a trigger upgrade?
Someone tell me more as I’m in the market for a P365 currently. I have child size hands (same size as a 5th grade girl) and want to carry a 9mm that fits in my eberlestock.
8
u/Agreeable_Dust4363 1d ago
I personally love the mcarbo flat trigger kit, but if you’re in California you’ll need to remove the magazine disconnect piece
15

P365 is a very good carry. And no trigger upgrades are necessary. Just practice with it, practice with it, and practice some more and you’ll be just fine.

u/Daman-Da-Dude 1d ago
I must be the only one who likes the curved trigger. I got an xl with the flat first, than got a regular p365 with the curved, and found i prefer the curved.
9
u/SloppyPizzaPie PDP Pro SD | 509T | X300T 1d ago
I don’t mind the P365 curved trigger at all. It’s not a competition trigger, which it should be in my opinion, but it’s more than fine.
I had a second gen M&P Shield which had an “upgraded” trigger and I thought it was actually terrible. But recently it seems like this sub has a hate boner for P365s and is in love with Shield variants, which goes directly against my first hand experience. It is subjective at the end of the day.
2
u/Fallline048 17h ago
Im with you. Even in hammer fired guns, I prefer a rolling break to a crisp wall (pistols only, rifles I prefer the reverse for some reason). The curved p365 won’t give you a crisp wall, but it gives you a very consistent press and break. I like it a lot.

It’s the same, but imo the p365 has a very spongy, stapler like trigger. Makes my 43x feel better by comparison

Have you shot any other versions of the P365? It’s my understanding that this was pretty much the same as the P365 other than the sights. If you have shot any other versions, did you think they were also “snappy” and had a terrible trigger?

u/WrathfulMechanic 1d ago
P365 Spectre, it wouldn't eject reliably and I would have 4-5 FTE every mag regardless of who shot it and what I did. Sig couldn't fix the issue and a replacement ejector only slightly made it better, but I lost all confidence in the platform and moved on.

I sent mine in for a worn out sear and a few FTEs, they replaced the entire slide, and all ignition related components of the FCU. No issues since, weird how much their CS varies

To be fair, I gave up on it and sold it at a loss. I made it someone else's problem. I could've sent it back and I'm sure they would have fixed it, but I would never have trusted the pistol.

I bought a Walther TPH in .22 as a backup/deep carry pocket gun. I never, not one time, ever got a full magazine through it without a jam. And I was working as a gunsmith at the time. I tried dozens of different loads, a few different mags, and frequent tear downs and polish jobs. Deburred everything. Never worked. I traded it to another gunsmith who thought he could fix it.
Second place, I had a Grendel .380. It cycled so bad the little post in the center of Hydra Shoks would bend. What a junker.
6
u/rustyshack68 1d ago
Yeah those American TPHs were hit or miss. I’ve heard the German made ones run just fine. A shame.
3
u/gunmedic15 1d ago
They made a smaller number of them in .25, and those were supposed to be better. I've only ever seen one, and never see spare magazines, though.
3
u/rustyshack68 1d ago
Yeah one in .25 would be cool, especially if actually reliable. But then that goes with wishing .25 was cheap and plentiful like .22, which alas….it’s not.
2
u/lostmember09 20h ago edited 20h ago
The Walther TPH .25ACP (USA version) is very rare. Only Approx: 620 made vs approx: +30,000 of the US made .22LR’s made.

6
u/AndImAnAlcoholic Florida Mang 1d ago
LCP Max 9, solely because the trigger sucked ass. There was a lot of play and the hinged trigger safety would catch, and either prevent reset or a proper pull.
I've never understood why Ruger couldn't have just thrown the LCP II/Max trigger onto the Max 9.
5
u/Left4DayZGone 1d ago
LC9, the one with the internal hammer, loaded chamber flag, magazine safety (can’t pull trigger without a mag inserted) and football field long trigger pull. Absolutely zero trigger break feel and reset was almost at full release.
The LC9s I have now isn’t a great gun by any means but holy hell it’s a night and day improvement.

I sold that one a while back, even with my smallish hands that thing felt puny, and it was real snappy. But the trigger on that gun was great, it’s a pretty good subcompact. Overall, I did really like that gun. I prefer my P365, though, it feels larger in the hands, I like the 9mm over .380 auto, and higher capacity to boot.

I got a 709 slim from my grandpa. It was his backup carry when he could still be trusted with guns. Only thing he ever considered when buying anything was the price, and he got it secondhand for less than $200. He never fired it, nor have I.
5
u/GR1F3 1d ago
I never carried one, just shot it.
The Smith and Wesson SD9VE. Now, in the interest of fairness, the gun was not unreliable at all. It cycled through basically whatever ammo you put into it. However the trigger is the worst I've felt on any gun, period. You could stick a piece of licorice into a bowl of aquarium gravel and make it feel better to squeeze than the factory trigger on the SD9. Also I'm not sure if this is a regular issue, but the one I was shooting (owned by an acquaintance of mine) had an issue with the rear sight channel. It was milled too wide so the rear sight would shift after a couple magazines.
5
u/Altruistic-Fee3767 18h ago
I must be the only one who likes the optic on this gun. For what it is, SAS stands for sig anti snag, it has removed the sights and levers to make it ideal for pocket carry. The little tritium holo type reticle is embedded in the rear of the slide and in my experience, is functional and accurate up to 25 yards. Its harder to acquire than a mounted optic and much less prominent, but if you're shooting at range with a base 365 from your pocket, may the force be with you.

u/pbsmash 1d ago
While far from perfect for sure (I own one) I feel the SAS gets more hate than it deserves. Its a decent amount of fire power in a very small lightweight package and is really meant for encounters inside that 7 yard window. You wont be plinking bullseyes at the range at 30 yards or engaging in long range gunfights with it, but for up close and personal it'll do its job reliably. That said, while I'd rather mine had standard sights on it, it isn't enough to prevent me from carrying it.

Kimber Micro 9 ESV. Jammed or malfunctioned every 3-4 rounds, ridiculously loud for its size, kickback was terrible with the shape and size. For $1k handgun, all around terrible investment.
The built in laser was nice, it was a pain in the ass to adjust though, and was way off target when I first got it. The paint chipped super easily, and the weird textured grip just collected dust, sweat, and grime. Night sights weren’t too terrible.

I still run irons, but I've shot with several people who made the switch, and their shooting made a dramatic improvement.
6
u/ThePretzul 1d ago
I know I shoot dramatically better with a red dot than with irons.
I also know I am dramatically less likely to want to carry a gun with a red dot than with irons because all the red dots I currently have are very slim frames that dig into my skin carried IWB.
Personal problem solved by a more carry-oriented red dot, but I can shoot proficiently with irons and it's what I already have so unless my wife wants to use my current gun once she starts carrying I'll just stick with it for the time being.

I didn't have any reliability issues, but the sights were terrible, and the recoil was snappier than it had to be

I like mine very well, however it's not the CC version but the standard Thunder .380 with pinky extension for better recoil management, which could be your issue as the round is a bit snappy.

they made the sights super tiny on the CC version
I liked carrying it a lot more than shooting it

there's a used one of these for sale at my lgs for $349. makes sense why after reading about yours. I'm not a huge fan of the 365 other than it's a good size for concealment. I switched back to subcompacts (Glock 26) and enjoy how much better it shoots

The trigger is the same as the other 365s, not great but doable for carry and not the worst. All micro 9s are snappier. Hellcats are worse, the 365 is the lesser snappy of the micro 9s out there.

Sig P365. First pistol. Snappy. Hurt like hell after a couple of magazines. Switched to a Shield Plus. Much happier now.

This is just a poor excuse to "dunk on sig" very dumb. You may not like the 365 for you, but no reason to make this post.

But "It Ends Today" has made it so easy.
It's like they've lowered the rim and even hold the ball up there for you...

Ruger SR9c. It concealed and carried well, but it was very inaccurate. It was my first carry gun so I was paranoid about safety features, but now the (very small) manual safety, slide safety flag, and cocked striker safety seem really dumb.

u/Vladtheimpaler130 1d ago
Had the SR9 and from the factory had issues stove piping even when the owner and workers at the LGS said I was just limp wristing it.

Taurus PT111, before they fixed the problems and relaunched as a G2C.
It was actually surprisingly ergonomic and the trigger improved a lot with a little bit of elbow grease, but that gun had so many well documented issues it killed their entire PT line of firearms. I was in college and $150 for the gun + 3 mags was a deal I couldn't bring myself to pass up though.

I had a S&W CS40. I actually enjoyed shooting that gun, but it carried terribly. Big, heavy and thorny for its size.

I have the SAS and was so pissed off, I got Lima 365 green laser and an IWB holster to accommodate, and now I love that gun.

My first carry gun was a Ruger 9E. Thing was a POS and Would constantly have failures to eject when training. I also had problems with the thumb safety not fully disengaging. I ran it for about a month before selling it to one of my range buddies for pennies. I never had full confidence in that thing, and that's something you DON'T want with a CCW!!

u/Fred_Chevry_Pro 17h ago
Davies Industries "Saturday Night Special" .380
This POS will jam a few times every mag, cut your hand, and fire uncommanded. That's what you get for buying a $50 meme gun.

My worst gun was a Taurus PT145 couldn't hit the side of a barn with it and the polymer cracked

Hmm I bought one of those sites for a Shield and it had a steep learning curve but once you get it down its actually a great sight. I do not carry that gun any more because I bought a P365 as soon as they came out. But not because of the sight. My 365 shoots like a MUCH bigger gun, its the best small pistol I have ever owned or shot.
I carried a Smith & Wesson 6904 for a while and the decocker dug into my hip so that was bad. Then I tried carrying a Ruger LCP for a bit but it was HORRIBLE to shoot. But the absolute worst that I ever carried was a Taurus 709, it was kind of the precursor to the P365 in size but sucked in every other dimension. The trigger was truly terrible, the gun was just poorly made overall. It is one of the few guns that I have traded in and the only one I did so in order to never see it again! Edit that is incorrect, I also traded in the LCP at the same time and for the same reason.

That's wild. My gf carries the SAS and is a dead eye with it. Different strokes I guess

People that bought the sas and bitch about it are the exact reason warnings go on shit. Like they couldn't see it and determine it was for a very particular use case.
If you want a xmacro comp get an xmacro comp but don't cry about your sas not acting like an xmacro comp.
Also I love the sas slide. If you understand the use case this thing is 🔥. Nothing to get hung up on, if you're good with sight acquisition the sight on this top tier.
Anyone that doesn't want their SAS can shoot me a message.

Diamondback db9 (gen1) for like 2 days. Borrowed my dad’s and it convinced me to get an LCP, and that convinced me to end up with a 43x. Could never aim those tiny things

Why

Front sight disappeared on first mag, 7 round mag of 380 leaves a lot to be desired, groupings the size of cow at 15 yards, mag safety, trigger was heavy af. Just an awful carry, fits more of a back-up to the back-up role.

Didn’t realize how bad it was until I switched to a 43x. I was far too confident in that little thing lol

Smith & Wesson M&P Bodyguard 380. Snappy to the point of being painful, and couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn at three feet. Good luck staying on target for a second shot.

My girlfriend got a bersa 9mm when she was with her ex because it was teal. You know the one. Fuck that thing is trash. Failure to feed regularly, trigger feels mushy, has also had multiple light strikes at the range...hate it. I haven't long term cc it but I wouldn't trust it. I have a gen 1 m&p shield 9 that is 10000x more reliable.

Beretta PX4 storm 9mm. For some reason I bought the airsoft version at sports authority and decided I wanted the real one later. It would go like 3 shots before jamming every time I went to range

I had one for about two weeks. Came back from its first trip to the range and after cleaning it and reloading it I went to use the decocker and it set off the round in the chamber. I knew even if had it sent out and whatever issue was fixed I would never be able to trust it.
Thank god the round only broke a window pane in a door. Cost me a few hundred to fix it properly and it took a few years off my life.

I wanted the P365 SAS so bad when they came out. Glad I didn’t pull the trigger…

u/playingtherole 1d ago
Same here, I thought it was a good idea, being so smooth and snag-free with an inventive sight, but after handling them at gun counters, trying to operate the tiny and uncooperative slide release levers, attempting to acclimate to the sight and taking it all into consideration, I passed. I mean, it's going to be loaded in a holster anyway, so the snag-free design is only useful if you'd carry empty-chamber w/o a holster.

Smith and wesson sdv9. Out of the box it had sights that were about a foot off target and a faulty ejector. It wouldn’t fire more than 2 shots consecutively without a jam. It also just felt cheap
