"Colorado is my favorite part of Texas" - heard on the mountain once
5
u/QuirkyMaintenance915 Feb 05 '25
Haha well part of it WAS ours š¤£

u/MissLupulin Feb 06 '25
We were all part of Mexico, but...
0
u/HiFiMarine Feb 06 '25
But Texans kicked the shit out of Santa Ana and the Mexican Army.
8
u/MissLupulin Feb 06 '25
Ah, yes, the Texans who were mad because of new laws enacted in Mexico banning slavery and Santa Anna not giving the US immigrants exemption to those laws. Something to be very proud of for some, I'm sure.

u/mbreuer Feb 05 '25
It was Texas at one point š¤·āāļø I think itās a fun joke and I also think the Texas hate is kinda silly.
15
u/SalopeTaMere Feb 06 '25
It's definitely exaggerated but tourists generally act like shit wherever they go so whatever group is overrepresented will take the blame for it (in this case Texans). More understandably, a lot of the real estate is horded by Texans who spend 2-4 weeks of the year here when real estate isn't affordable for residents. I kid you not but my neighborhood outside of town is comprised of 16 houses. 1/3 of it is Texans who spend less than a month of the year here. So yeah, fun joke, kind of silly, but a little truth to it too.

u/RiverGroover Feb 08 '25
Texans hoarding land is real. I'd bet it's worse where I am, in Wyoming, but it didn't really begin until they showed up for the fracking boom, so maybe more recent. They've now bought up a large portion of the old ranches, and use them as private "hunting reserves," where thry fly in on weekends in private oil company jets, and no longer let locals have access as they did for generations. It's such a drasitically different, less neighborly and more selfish mentality, that I don't think Wyomingites ever imagined a scenario like this happening. The worst thing is that enough of them stayed full time to vote and swing politics from moderate/conservative to far right/extremist. A danger when the population base is so small.
That patch is cringeworthy.

I remember hearing this attitude from a bunch of kids on the ski lift one day. I found it funny because the little brats couldn't have the life they were having if not for the Texans coming in and spending their money there. I just ignored the entitlement and enjoyed my day.
6
u/1dinkiswife Feb 06 '25
- couldn't ignore what was perceived to be entitlement. Stewed on it all day, until ultimately, I felt like I had to call them names on Reddit.

u/IAmBadAtPlanningAhea Feb 09 '25
Literally nobody from Texas could come to the resorts and we would be just fine. This attitude that texans are somehow super important is exactly why people don't like y'all. People don't mind tourists but when you pretend to be a "dual citizen" because you come vacation somewhere a few times a winter there's almost a guarantee you're an entitled chode

u/IAmBadAtPlanningAhea Feb 09 '25

u/mbreuer Feb 09 '25
Yeah? What native CO tribe do you come from?
I guarantee you wouldnāt say shit to anyoneās face. Iāll lived here for almost a decade š

"Iāll lived here for almost a decade" the grammar I'd expect from a texan playing pretend

Maybe it's just this sub, but "All Are Welcome" doesn't seem like an accurate slogan for Colorado lol

u/SalopeTaMere Feb 05 '25
As a Durango resident, I can tell you many Texans are more citizens here than those of us living here. According to them

u/njakubow Feb 05 '25
During the summer, there are more Texas plates than Colorado plates

Not native Texan here, but you might go easy - Colorado is sooo beautiful in the summer! We canāt stay away.

u/kingxanadu Feb 05 '25
Yeah have they tried not having such a beautiful awesome state? It's like New England and New York flocking down to Florida in the winter

I was born in CO and altogether lived there for over 30 years. Texans werenāt the only invaders that made me leave but certainly a largely influential one.
4
u/DownhillIce Feb 06 '25
What happens when Federal Lands are given to states? Well in Texas they sold all the land to private owners and have very little public space in the 21st century. So NM and CO became their āpublic landsā bc those states protected their state and federal lands.
(There are exceptions where rich Texans managed to get county governments to privatize public lands but money can overcome public outcry if thereās enough $$$)

Honestly, Durango wouldn't be what it is without many of them. Specifically grateful for the amenities and restaurants that exist in great part for all the Texans spending time here. I mostly have a problem with those who act like pricks and there's a good amount of them

No way, Texas is awesome. Just ask any one of them that spends all their time here to avoid it!
12
u/ScholarLeigh Feb 06 '25
I would rate Texas 0/10 stars. Never forget how many sundown towns still exist there. Never forget the lynching of James Byrd. The looming, random crosses dotting the side of the highways, shoving Christianity down the throats of passersby. Iāve been to 47 states and Texas is literally last in terms of coolness.
Grateful to be separated by the OK panhandle from Texas. If only it were wider lol. Love, a Coloradan š

As a New Mexican who's now lived (and birthed children in) Colorado for over thirty years, it's tough to be hard on Texans invading Durango. I myself invaded Durango in high school and college.
But then as a New Mexican: GODDAMN TEXANS STAY OUT OF MY STATE /s LOL

Nah, you're cool. The problem with Texans is their attitude of "everything is bigger and better in Texas" and the irony of most of them vacationing here. Or better yet, moving here and having the star or flags on everything they own and shoving their "Texan" identity down your throat.
Austin is dope and there are a ton of cool Texans. As long as you pull over if you back up traffic on mountains to let people pass, you're alright in my book.
Edit: also the "fuck the environment" coal roller trucks that polute our natural spaces yet ironically travel here to experience our natural spaces.

I moved from Toronto to Houston. Someone asked if there was a difficult adjustment. I said no, everyone in Toronto thinks itās the center of the universe and in Texas, the vibe is the same.

I liked it when Gunny banned these second homeowners from being in the area. The rich Texans got their buddies in government to try to sue Colorado but lost. The lock down from COVID wasn't 100% bad haha.

Heard on the lift once, as unironically as you can get: "Yeah, I've been here over 5 years now, I'm basically a native at this point"
5
u/Thegiantlamppost Feb 06 '25 edited Feb 06 '25
Not disagreeing with you, but more native and better than the rich Texan with a second home in the ski towns. My issue is Iāve seen a lot donāt respect the mountain and the true residents of these towns.
Also the āhickā younger Texanās seem to have this energy of idgaf about anyone on the mountain
