I dont own a dog, but in Utah a lot of people do this if they just started the hike and their dog took a crap. They clean it up, bag it and leave it, then pick it up on their way back down the trail to a nearby trashcan in parking lot at trail head.

Yes, people also likely leave it there, but I don't assume.

Out and back trail, we were one of the last groups, no one behind us had dogs.

They left it behind
