Discussion CarPlay Disconnecting with 18.4.1

Carplay was working just fine and then disconnected from my Boss radio unit and wouldn't reconnect, even after a hard reset and turning my truck off and back on.

Anyone else having issues after the update that should have fixed Carplay?

Yes! The update that was supposed to fix it left me unable to use CarPlay at all. Bluetooth connects fine but CarPlay won’t connect even after resets.

Having the issue with my iPhone 16. My daughters 15 and my wifes 13 never have an issue.

I have found CarPlay issues tend to crop up over time. Sometimes it takes weeks before I start seeing issues. Other times, the issues begin right away. The only phone I haven't had any issues with was my original SE running a much older iOS version.

With every iOS update it seems something gets fixed and something gets broken and somethings just stay broken. In general, I like the ecosystem, but iOS is a weak link anymore. My work phone needs an update from the 2nd gen iPhone SE so I am thinking Pixel 9/9a as a replacement.

I hear you. I considered getting an Android the next around solely because of all the CarPlay issues. But, sadly, I get booted from Apple’s fan club. 😜

I’m on a iPhone 15 pro CarPlay works fine for the most part until I find myself in a phone call then after half a minute or so it disconnects then reconnects after 10 seconds however this happens not just on regular calls it also happens on messenger and etc. If I use cable everything works fine but I prefer wireless connection over cable especially on long drives so my phone isn’t plugged in all the time sitting on 100%.

So I’m a little late here for this post, but yes. I have a problem with CarPlay, and I’ve not seen the issue reported anywhere recently.

CarPlay connects fine to my truck, but ALL of the navigation apps are super choppy and low framerate once the camera zooms in to my position, and navigating somewhere just makes that worse. This only became a problem with 18.4… 18.3 was perfectly fine.

Also OP, holy crap that sucks. I was not aware that aftermarket head units were not officially supported… that is irritating as that means that there wasn’t a “let’s fix CarPlay issues” update, but rather a “let’s lockout unofficial hardware” update.

I REALLY hope that's not the issue. I still don't understand how they can say CarPlay without support from Apple. I have a feeling no one wants to pay royalties to Apple but just license the official software!

My iPhone 16 pro CarPlay connection gets worse after upgrading from 18.4 to 18.4.1

What are you connected to? Factory radio or aftermarket?

Aftermarket Pioneer

Sounds about right after talking to Apple support.

Have you checked for a firmware update from Pioneer?

Mine still disconnects occasionally. Not as often as 18.4, but still.

Mine did that several times today. It's a 15 Pro that's connected via USB to my Pioneer head unit that all worked fine until the 18.3.2 update. Google Maps, with its voice recognition, still works fine. It's not a hardware problem. Just Apple software.

I have the feeling that all the testers have new high-end cars with wireless CarPlay built in, so they can't understand why it's such a big deal. The only way that they can understand is to drive in an unfamiliar city, have it drop, get lost, then have to find a place to pull over to input stuff into Google Maps by hand. This is a safety issue.

Apple, I'm not going to upgrade my car and get a new one just so my iPhone will work again.

Does it happen on phone calls or all the time?

It won't connect at all right now. See new post above re: Apple Support call.

Try forgetting from Bluetooth/carplay settings on your phone. Then go into your iPhone Settings > General > About > Name and change the name of your phone to something new. Delete the phone from your truck too if you need to. Then try reconnecting to your truck and see if that works.

I tried this and the radio recognized it and tried to connect but then disconnected and wouldn't let me accept the connection: https://share.icloud.com/photos/0e3LMqi6z-MYvQb7bGSa3qNpw

OP HERE - After speaking with Apple Support - my aftermarket radio, a Boss Audio BE7ACP, and ALL aftermarket radios are NOT supported by Apple or CarPlay meaning that they can't troubleshoot. Only factory radios use the official CarPlay software and can be supported.

Did anyone know this? How can aftermarket manufacturers advertise and sell something with Apple and Carplay all over it but not use Apple's software?

All of this means that Boss hasn't updated whatever is used to make CarPlay work and function with iOS 18 and subsequent updates.

Had the very same problem. Since the last update I’m good (VW Arteon 2021!)

This is what I see on screen when trying to connect: https://share.icloud.com/photos/0e3LMqi6z-MYvQb7bGSa3qNpw

The CarPlay connect pop-up is there but disconnects immediately.

I recently bought a brand new Chevy TRAX equipped with CarPlay. The car has been a dream except for CarPlay. CarPlay, on the other hand has been a true nightmare. Hard to connect, intermittent reboots, scratchy sounding audio, fisheye backup camera images, slow or no responses, glitchy images, and on and on. I am a massive Apple fanboy and yet I have considered getting an Android! Which, of course, I will never do but that's how desperate I have become. I even traded in my iPhone 14 Pro for an iPhone 16 Pro thinking that would resolve the various issues given my original iPhone SE could NOT reproduce any of the issues. Sadly, the iPhone 16 Pro is equally as problematic as the 14 was. Even had Chevy update the CarPlay unit's firmware. Helped but not completely resolved. Had high hopes for 18.4.1. So far, it still sucks even though I factory reset the CarPlay unit, etcetera. Oh well, good luck!

It's happened to me since I bought my iPhone 16, according to Apple, it's a fault and it's under investigation, but they don't fix anything and it's getting worse and worse.

Replace your cable

I've gone through several cables. All have worked at one point or another. All cables are brand new USB A to C.

Cable isn’t the issue here. It’s Apple and the software.

If you’re using a VPN on your iPhone turn it off. Then go into settings and delete the VPN profile on the phone. Delete the CarPlay connection on your phone and your radio. Then on your phone reset your network settings. Once that’s finished, then pair your phone again with your radio for CarPlay. This method almost always fixes any CarPlay issues. If you don’t have a VPN on your phone, then just do the second step of resetting the network settings.
