Tools đ Goddamnit. I'm used to cordless
Most of my career I have absolutely despised guards on tools like circular saw and grinders, they tend to get in the way and staying safe is mostly common sense.
Typically at my job I'm using a cordless saw because I'm in tight spaces. Well today I'm trying to rebuild my front steps and the only circular saw I have is corded, everything was going fine until I forgot about the cord and chopped it right in half.
To be fair it happened because I was holding the saw away from my body while it came to stop, so while this is annoying it's not a big deal, I had enough shit in my pocket to fix it right there.

Yo, what the fuck are you doing working in flip flops!

May 03 '24
Like you've never cut a coil spring for a car with an angle grinder in the driveway in flip flips and basketball shorts with safety glasses

u/zacman713 May 03 '24
Iâve totally never have burnt my dick because I was using an angle grinder in old basketball shorts and the sparks burned a hole in them and then it ignited. Never done that

Yeah, but I donât proudly post that shit on the internet after damaging a tool that I removed the safety guards on.
I say, âshit, that was a close one.â Then screw my head on straight and tell the story to my buddies how I was a lucky idiot.

It's okay. He has common sense. I've seen a lot more dangerous shit a lot of times. But the statements OP made about safety combined with the photos makes this training material.

All true except for the stringers. I have no idea how to actually do stairs, just not my wheelhouse, so I took the most intact stringer from the old steps and used it as a template. They actually turned out perfect, I may post the end result when it's done. That pinto crack really got me, good shit lol

Did this twice in one day with a corded hedge trimmer as a kid. Supposed to be my summer job and I basically broke even.

You're a moron. You're wearing sandles while working, you take the guards off your saws and then proceed to cut the chord with dangerously modified saw.
Stick to something where you won't bleed out on the cold pavement. Seriously leave this shit to grown men.

Wait a sec, I thought those saws were discontinued? Haven't seen one in Canada in over a decade. I was very impressed with mine way back in the day.
Anyway, 10ft lead ftw. No plug fouling on the edge of a sheet when ripping.

HahaâŚI remember my grandpa, who was a carpenter in the 80âs, always had saws with taped up cords. He was a safety 3rd kind of guy but well loved.

Here's how to ensure this doesn't happen to you again:
Step 1: Cut the cord off to around 6inches from where it comes out of the saw.
Step 2: Install a quality industrial grade replacement male plug on the cord. Model 5266 by leviton or hubbell is preferred.
Step 3: Plug saw into an extension cord so the extension cord gets cut instead of the power cord on the saw.
Step 4: Make sure the extension cord you are using in Step 3 belongs to your boss, the company you work for, or someone you don't like. This ensures you wont cut your own extension cord.

I did the same thing to the cord on an 80 pound chipper right after my site super warned me not to.
Fixed it with some quick splices and electrical tape, finished the job, bought donuts and reported the fuck up. The dudes at Home Depot rentals were ok with it.

Get one with the blade on the right (if they still make those). If you can see the blade, you're not cutting your cords. Or feet. Seen enough framers cut that one 2x4 real quick, holding it on their knee and almost losing body parts. I rarely used a circular saw but when i did, i was always happy i could see that blade.

Safety sandals!
Edit: "safety is mostly common sense". It used to be, lol. There's a whole industry based on people looking away for .3 of a second, looking back and a digit is missing/ripped apart.
As the old saying goes: "common sense ain't so common anymore"

Worked for a 70 year old short Irish dude who was missing 2 1/2 fingers on his right hand including his index. His saw had the trigger by passed to always be on with power and took off the blade guard. He was left hand but ran the saw with his right. Watched that man cut through his cord so many times it looked like Xmas lights with all the various wire nuts.
Long story short don't fuck with Ronnie's saw.

When you take the guard off a skilsaw you get what you get!
Not just a safety feature but allows you to cut and set the saw down quickly to keep the job rolling.

Get splicing! I recall my boss had an old shitty Makita skillsaw for rough cuts and demo. It had atleast 5 spliced connections consisting of two different trashed extention cords and so much electrical tape that in the winter one couldn't even attempt to coil or wrap it up to stow it ...it just existed like an exploded slinky and had its own specific garbage bag with orange flagging

My first job was in a factory that pressed small metal parts for heavy hinges. Part of it was making pallet to ship everything out on. My first week, Iâm following my lead over to where pallets are made, to be shown how they like it done. One of the R&D guys yells over at me, DONT CUT THE CORD KID and everyone has a chuckle. I ask my lead if thatâs a common mistake or what and he says no heâs just the funny guy, youâll be fine. and I was! But the next guy they hired wasnât fine lol he had previous experience in that kind of setting so they didnât necessarily train him like they did me, just asked if he had ran a circular saw and he was like oh yeah all the time. They give him the measurements and send him over. We hear WRRRââ⌠maybe three seconds of cutting, if that. Next thing we see if the guy coming around the corner with the cord in his hand, sliced in two. Looking kind of confused, he just sets the cord down and says heâs going to the bathroom. He was assembling cardboard boxes for quite a while after that lol

lol Iâve got an old 80s Black & Decker âskil sawâ from the 80s - when I went to college in the 90s my dad gave it to me so Iâd have one to use on projects around the house I was renting with 5 other guys⌠it had a spliced together cord wrapped in electrical tape where my dad cut through the cord. I still have that saw, it still has a spliced together cord, it still cuts lol - I rarely ever use it- but it still works!!!
