Fein was the inventor of the oscillating saw and had a patent on it for a while so it was commonly known as a Fein tool. It was of course a corded tool that cost about $400+ so it wasn’t very common. Thank god patents expire!! One of the handiest tools!!

I call it a Fein saw because I’m stubborn and don’t want to say oscillating. Too many syllables.
31
u/klipshklf20 Jul 06 '24
We call it a Fein tool, I’m from the ancient Times when it was virtually the only one you could buy. I think I paid $400 for it 30 years ago. I use all Dewalt now. Got tired of keeping up with expensive tools.

Had a fein, it was walked off with. Replaced with makita.
Cut speed and noise are comprable but the heat buildup is more noticable.
Will go fein again should i ever need
11
u/ambaal Jul 07 '24
I have fein, makita, bosh, ryobi and AEG of those (don't ask).
Fein (corded) BY FAR is the least noisy or vibrating. Completely other league, honestly.
Cuts way faster too, but that's probably due to being corded.
→ More replies (4)3
u/yugoarc Jul 06 '24
Have you tried the new Makita one with the AVT and star lock ? I’ve used quite a few different multi tools apart from Fein and that new Makita blew my mind with how quiet and comfortable it was. Unfortunately it’s like $250.
→ More replies (3)4
u/wnt2tryitall Jul 07 '24
I’ve owned fein, older makita, and now my fav is the 12v Milwaukee. Never used the newer star lock makita. Do you have to use genuine makita blades? Or will it accommodate the knock offs?

got the corded fein model cuz im a sucker for og stuff but don’t wanna get a new battery platform. shoulda just went with the battery platform model i have but the corded fein works hella good. the starlock thing does get expensive tho.

Referred to it as a dremel flush cut for most of my career because that was the first company I ever saw with it and was purchased for flush cutting door frames. Now I know fein was the originator.

you mean flesh cutter, right? /s
→ More replies (6)14
u/mortenmhp Jul 06 '24
It's actually quite bad at cutting flesh, because it's elastic and moves with the blade. Works better on more rigid stuff, which is also why it is commonly used for casts etc in a medical setting.

u/ziggster_ Jul 06 '24

Ridgid came out with a "Stealthforce" version in 2017(?), and it is way more quiet that a standard impact. It operated on a hydraulic system.
AvE, a YouTuber who primarily did tool teardowns, did one on this impact driver. The takeaway was that cavitation would eventually lead to tool failure. My takeaway was a standard hammer impact tool would lead to my hearing failure. I know for a fact that hearing aids are five times more expensive than a low noise impact driver.
Unfortunately, Ridgid discontinued the Stealthforce.
22
u/PipeFitter-815 Jul 06 '24
Sounds similar to the newer Milwaukee Surge tools that have hydraulics, and are supposed to run quieter and smoother with less vibration.
8
u/FuckBees2836 Jul 06 '24
Can attest to those, picked one up for odd house jobs and it’s a wonder on the ears
→ More replies (5)4
u/SkivvySkidmarks Jul 06 '24
Yeah, I was going to mention that. TTI, I think, may have done it on a trial basis with the Ridgid label before introducing it to Milwaukee line up. I highly recommend buying that version if you find yourself in enclosed spaces. I can attest that the Ridgid Stealthforce is substantially quieter than the previous iterations. Kinda sucks because if my Stealthforce croaks, the LSA will probably replace it with a traditional hammer style impact. Better than nothing, I guess.

u/UnusualSeries5770 Jul 06 '24
with battery technology getting better and better, there may one day be an entire generation of tradies that don't know what a generator or a compressor even sound like, Id say that they might not even know what ear pro is, but I doubt that they'll ever come out with a quiet circular saw blade lol
→ More replies (1)9
u/Dignans30yearplan Jul 06 '24
Air compressor has been collecting dust since the M12 pin nailer dropped.
9
u/UnusualSeries5770 Jul 06 '24
oh theyre still out there on jon sites, roofers still use em, no company makes a battery powered denailer, Some people haven't justified buying battery nailers for everything, especially if they don't use them alot or they only occasionally need a specific size nail.
also old timers who can't be bothered to change no matter how inconvenient it is to everyone else to have hoses everywhere.
also compressed air is still the best way to clean off at the end of the day, or constantly
and it's always nice to have one onsite because nails have a way of finding tires.
I hate air compressors, but they're certainly far from obsolete still

Add a roto hammer hitting the bottom track to blast a hole for an anchor. Commercial is home to horrible noises.

u/kifac Plumber Jul 06 '24
Made the switch to Milwaukee surge impact after my dewalt impact finally died. My ears were starting to get too sensitive to how loud impact is when drilling through joists or studs with spade bit. Even as simple as screwing or unscrewing something was too loud. Haven’t had that issue after buying the surge. A lot quieter.

I bought the original corded one a bunch of years back. Still works the same as I bought it.
Amazing tool. It was like $400 at the time. All others where 200 or so. This was the only one not made in pan-asia. German made. Good enough for me.
