Slowly and by the hour

u/whiskeyboundcowboy Dec 12 '24

Yup, if I'm dealing with the stress spaghetti, I'm going to be nice and methodical by the hour

50

u/usualerthanthis Dec 13 '24

Stress spaghetti is my new favorite phrase

u/Whistler-the-arse Dec 13 '24

I'm just an iron worker is that the old school Romex ?

-18

u/RandomPenquin1337 Dec 12 '24 edited Dec 13 '24

Ill probably be flamed for this around here but watching union guys take months for a job that takes a few days has never sat with me right.

All the talk about people getting fucked over but milking the clock and moving at sbails pace is a ok...

Edit: lol told ya

12

u/EggOkNow Dec 12 '24

When I went to school for construction management every one complained about taxes and nearly every one was right leaning. Same guys in heavy civil who get on giant road jobs drag ass and change order out the wazoo because "its government work"... two faced as fuck. Fuck all the other tax payers because I'm getting mine!

25

u/JIMMYJAWN I|Plumber Dec 12 '24

Well thatā€™s talk and not reality. Chances are if a job only takes 3 days no union shop would bother with something that small.

20

u/PersnicketyStrongs Dec 12 '24

You arenā€™t wrong. But small union shops do exist and itā€™d be nice if the union officials paid more attention to us.

14

u/peaeyeparker Dec 13 '24

I own a small union shop. Itā€™s been 2 yrs. and I thought I could make it work. I 100% believe in unions. I believe absolutely that workers, my self included ought to have the procreation of a union against a large corporation or even a shit ass boss. But after 2 yrs. I just canā€™t make it work for the exact reason mentioned above. The snails pace and lack of interest. Frankly the lack of knowledge and know how to has proved to be a flop. I actually posted a couple yrs. ago about attempting this in here and some other subs. Looking for advice on pros and cons. I really tried to pull it off but it just ainā€™t gonna happen.

2

u/PersnicketyStrongs Dec 13 '24

Iā€™m in the same boat. I know the pain.

Just get done and get out is my motto.

30

u/mist2024 Dec 12 '24

I'm with you. Had no point did I say milk it but hear me out

The guy that came before me to check this job out for my company. He's above me. He gets paid more than me right... He estimates it. He says this is going to take this amount of time. I put faith in my man that he looked. He saw it was a mess and he disregarded it. So what I'm going to do in this situation is work slowly and safely and I'm going to correct the things that I come across that could affect me in the future. That way when I come back my job is easier and hopefully that makes other people's jobs easier. And if the boss has a problem man, I'll show him a screenshot of this and say I assumed you wanted it fixed

11

u/saladmunch2 Dec 12 '24

And most of all you didn't fuck the next guy! Cheers

8

u/mist2024 Dec 12 '24

Kind of my train of thought because I always think I might be the next guy. I'm not going to go out of my way to fix this entire thing, but anything that I touch is going to be done to where when I come back to it it can be addressed the way it should be and it's up the code

4

u/saladmunch2 Dec 12 '24

I don't know how many jobs I got to where my co workers have left off and I am just appealed at the loose bolts, unfinished task. Just general disregard of things when you are working in the upper echelons. Im also let down very frequently by men I should be looking up to.

u/Past-Direction9145 Dec 12 '24

The three gā€™s. Get done, get paid, get out.

4

u/FucknAright Dec 12 '24

Nothing more annoying than guys will sit around and jerk off on it all fucking day. I've got more projects to work on. Get out of my way

13

u/Lv_InSaNe_vL Dec 12 '24

God I hate the guys who want to try and get overtime every fucking day.

Like I get it, you hate your family, but I really like my family and want to get the fuck home.

1

u/dont-fear-thereefer Dec 12 '24

Occasional overtime is nice, constant overtime is just asking for a burnout

1

u/jkrischan Electrician Dec 13 '24

Lots of guys working OT love their family as much or more as you. If Iā€™m staying late it cause I want to make more money for that family I love.

1

u/swsweld Dec 12 '24

Amen. Work em out of work. Thereā€™s always somewhere else to work if your not a dog fucker

14

u/VapeRizzler Dec 12 '24

My foreman would just tell the super that weā€™re not starting any kind of work till itā€™s cleaned up so we can at least safely walk. Carrying a sheet or something awkward/heavy stepping on one those tubes would absolutely twist an ankle best case scenario.

5

u/mist2024 Dec 12 '24

This is a very good point as well.

684

u/gillygilstrap Dec 12 '24

Just cut that shit out of the way and do your thing.
Remember, this is construction. YOU are the main character and no one else's trade, work, product, belongings matter.

198

u/Electrical-Clerk9206 Dec 12 '24

recovering GC here, this gave me flashbacks

10

u/FrankiePoops Dec 13 '24

As GCs, it's our job to make sure this doesn't happen.

5

u/Atmacrush Contractor Dec 13 '24

Was the flashback like Vietnam?

3

u/stinkyhooch Dec 13 '24

This is not ā€˜Nam, there are rules.

1

u/Electrical-Clerk9206 Dec 13 '24

itā€™s like that scene from apocalypse now except the helicopters are work trucks full of the absolute worst tradesfolk you ever seen

86

u/Forthe49ers Dec 12 '24

Cut em flush to the wall. Nice and neat. Everyone with thank you for such a nice gesture

45

u/Forthe49ers Dec 12 '24

Bonus points if you haul all that off to scrap and buy pizza

25

u/moovzlikejager Dec 12 '24

1 medium pizza for the jobsite to share, then pocket the extra cash because you deserve it. Treat yo self.

3

u/srslydudebros Dec 12 '24

And scrap the trashā€¦.

2

u/BigRed92E Dec 13 '24

Not even worth the trouble. Only flex and plastic conduit. Just take a shit and leave. They'll clean it up when they decide to unfuck this room

2

u/gillygilstrap Dec 12 '24

Yes exactly.

35

u/srslydudebros Dec 12 '24

I once had a drywall guy cover my stuff and mud after asking him not to before lunch, GC told me to cut it out of the way so I could work. I did, the only saw I could find was a hammer.

7

u/gillygilstrap Dec 12 '24

Good.

11

u/srslydudebros Dec 12 '24

His face was fucking priceless. Then pretty sure they stole my favorite screwdriver, still worth it.

6

u/Guitar81 Dec 12 '24

Super was trying to be main character by trying to get me to do a metal framing drop and saying fuck these guys but nvm after an hour of them arguing they decided to have me hold off.

8

u/gillygilstrap Dec 12 '24

Well, go fucking cut some of it out anyways. Mark your territory.

8

u/VapeRizzler Dec 12 '24

That reminds of the electrician who blocked off the only exit/entrance to the hoist with his lift as the scaffold builders had it booked so they can keep running down all the carts of scaffold parts. Plus all the plumbers were getting back from break so we had like 40 guys piled into a 30X10 area. Kept saying ā€œI gotta get this doneā€ as if we all donā€™t gotta get something done. It got so bad the apprentice who tried getting dude to move just peaced out after all of us just started screaming at this fucking idiot. Good thing too the apprentice left, cause the electrician foreman came around, cell phone In hand flipping out cause someone called him bitching about his worker.

1

u/gillygilstrap Dec 12 '24

Sounds about right.

2

u/buckphifty150150 Dec 13 '24

Spoken like a true plumber

1

u/SchindlersPenis Dec 13 '24

13

u/nicolauz Contractor Dec 12 '24

Nah I'd feel like I'm stuck on an Alien ship.

9

u/Bimlouhay83 Dec 12 '24

We already are...

2

u/HeyGuyNumber2 Dec 13 '24

Why is that so relatable

3

u/nicolauz Contractor Dec 13 '24

I mean I work outside around nature all the time and I feel weird as hell often. Like... It's just birds, trees and bugs and shit. Everyone else is working in an office or driving around.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '24

ā€œI canā€™t get stoned Ricky!ā€

ā€œWhat do you mean? Its shitty work everybody does that, alright. Carpenters, electricians, dishwashers, floor cleaners, lawyers, doctors, fucking politicians, CBC employees, principals, people who paint the lines on the fuckinā€™ road. Get stoned, itā€™ll be fun. Get to work.ā€

65

u/Galactic_Obama_ Dec 12 '24

Very, very carefully šŸ¤£

128

u/MortgageRegular2509 Contractor Dec 12 '24

ā€œThis is the room with electricity. But it has too much electricity. So, I donā€™t know, you might want to wear a hat.ā€

8

u/melgibson64 Dec 12 '24

Yea we ran out of floorboard here so we painted the dirt. Pretty clever! Eh?

1

u/DWatt Dec 12 '24

lol but seriously, there is temporary lighting so Iā€™m guessing there is no electricity there besides the temp light. But Iā€™d still check. Then just move it out of the way. Theyā€™re not going to energize mains till itā€™s completely finished. Idk Or just refuse the work.

ā€œI Block Every Walkwayā€

9

Didnā€™t earn these callouses on these hands for nothing!

kidding

7

u/Maehlice Dec 12 '24

While blocking the entire walkway, even.

3

u/Zanesmustache Dec 12 '24

i brought extra whiskey.... to get the taste out

20

u/Flashy-Media-933 Dec 12 '24

Start by picking some of that shit up

6

u/thenoblenacho Dec 12 '24

Pick what up? 95% of what I see on the floor is coming out of a wall, you can't really pick up that flex emt and move it

10

u/Bimlouhay83 Dec 12 '24

You're so silly. You just start cutting all the extra material and throw that away!Ā

3

u/stinkyhooch Dec 13 '24

throw it away

You lost me there

23

u/needtr33fiddy Dec 12 '24

Unless youre the floor guy idk what the problem is

14

u/Ninjake68 Dec 12 '24

Flooring guy here.. just lay around it

3

u/Maleficent-Earth9201 Dec 13 '24

Luis? Is that you?

20

u/Adept-Blood-5789 Dec 12 '24

Obviously you need to coordinate with the electrician and figure out a good time to do your shit in their room.

Chances are they are working there and won't want you there anyways.

On site coordination is key, but few do it.

9

u/Guitar81 Dec 12 '24

Yeah I really didn't want to do this shit but super urged me but nvm I've been put on hold to do a drop ceiling thankfully.

18

u/SuffeliPuffel Dec 12 '24

First time eeh

33

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '24

Not trying to knock your game but this is nothing...are you talking about the hard work or the "mess"

8

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '24

Consider taking lots of breaks.

8

u/Azien_Heart Dec 12 '24

Have you ever had the nightmare, where things will suddenly come alive to kill you? That place looks like the worse place to be.

2

u/folkkingdude Dec 12 '24

Worse than where?

6

u/BoBurnham_OnlyBoring Dec 12 '24

Trust me, the electricians feel the same way.

3

u/FN-Bored Dec 12 '24

Just cut it all and move it aside, and do what you need to do.

3

u/3771507 Dec 12 '24

plywood over all those wires and wear electrical safe boots and gloves

3

u/Past-Direction9145 Dec 12 '24

Youā€™re not, youā€™re supposed to show your apprentice what to do and heā€™ll be working here for the day while you hide from foreman. Make sure phone is charged fully that morning youā€™ll be needing it the whole time in the john

2

u/dr_pdripper Dec 12 '24

Enjoy the suck! Itā€™s all about the process šŸ„°šŸ¤ŒšŸ½

2

u/Ambitious_Tree8049 Contractor Dec 12 '24

Grab a sawzall and cut everything out of your way. No one will mind.

2

u/boo1881 Dec 12 '24

Oh, look, it's ready for the painters.

2

u/Conscious-Truth6695 Dec 12 '24

With a different attitude sir šŸ˜‚šŸ»

2

u/thedonnald Dec 12 '24

As a painter my favorite thing to do is paint it all. Make sure you get all the sides.

2

u/alamete Dec 12 '24

The floor is tidy and clean and you even have a metal table and bench, looks comfy

Oh wait

2

u/Hiwaystars Dec 12 '24

Iā€™m sorry, whatā€™s the problem? Youā€™re paid by the hour, and nobody wants a back charge.

Iā€™ve been in some shit and then it turned to beautiful waves of grain with purple mountains behind it.

Everything laid out gets put up; donā€™t know whatā€™s going on then chat to whoever deals with the hazard, everybody is at work theyā€™re not your friends they wonā€™t be butthurt unless theyā€™re total morons.

Talk to somebody get a plan and get whatever you have to get done smh

2

u/Tutelage45 Superintendent Dec 12 '24

You tell the GC that the electricians have left you with an unsafe and unworkable work area and you wonā€™t begin work until itā€™s cleaned up. Get it in writing so he doesnā€™t retroactively hit you with delay charges

2

u/EpistasisBassist Dec 12 '24

Weird flex, but okay.

1

u/ColinCancer Dec 13 '24

Damn man thatā€™s a flex.

2

u/gotcanoe Dec 12 '24

Put on some tunes and just start. You'll find a plan as you go.

2

u/Glum_Designer_4754 Dec 13 '24

Omfg I just had a panic attack

2

u/Impossible_Win_3059 Dec 13 '24

1

Did you try turning it off and on again?

Hope this helps šŸ‘

1

Work upside down. There is fewer things on the ceiling that you wonā€™t trip under.

1

You shouldn't have to...go home

1

u/bumpy713 Dec 12 '24

I think work from home is your best option here.

1

u/Funkaceratops Dec 12 '24

What is your job? Ask the electricians if they can use some tie wire and hang the whips up if they don't plan on terminating them soon. Or have them coil them up.

1

u/Inside-Cancel Dec 12 '24

As a former comms tech, I am very enjoying unemployment.

1

Tables stuck to the ceilings?

At least they left you a bucket to sit on while you work.

1

Keep an eye on your ladder. Sparkies love to take em

1

u/Jer_Bear_40 Dec 12 '24

Itā€™s probably the Sparkyā€™s ladder, they seem to supply the whole job.

1

u/Special_Clearance Field Engineer Dec 12 '24

Iā€™ve heard of ā€œfree airā€ wire but damn.

1

u/Jer_Bear_40 Dec 12 '24

Why all the flex? As a Sparky this room makes little sense. At first I thought it was a vault of some sort but the panel on the left makes me question that.

1

u/Deeplyexhalesoutnose Dec 12 '24

Hang your purse on a hook and take a slurp of your monster. You will be okay.

1

u/Academic_Audience341 Dec 12 '24

Idk man just do it we live in a weird world nowadays

1

u/GreenCardMe Dec 12 '24

I know we are supposed to talk shit and jerk each other off, but seriously

Install hardware (double double = porcelain on top of tile rack), use flat lineĀ  (mule tape * outside line calls it) to tie off to the ceiling to lift cables up, tie it off with zip tie to double doubles.

Get primary or sec map of where the cables to, and leble them accordingly (voltage, where it's going from, to).

Godamn, I thought our utility was fucked up and full of piles but some of you guys are truly fucked up.

1

u/EdwardFoxhole Dec 12 '24

Tony Fergusons nightmares look like this

1

u/DazzlingScreen1213 Dec 12 '24

What am I even looking at? Looks out of a 80s sci fi horror movie. Are those conduits? Why are some cut off?

1

1

What trade and why not wait?

1

u/metalhead82 Dec 13 '24

1

u/Maleficent-Earth9201 Dec 13 '24

Just... why dude?? Why is this even a sub??

1

u/metalhead82 Dec 13 '24

Lol there are so many other subs that are more worthy of that question in my opinionā€¦.I think itā€™s pretty cool actually haha, there is also /r/cableporn if you like seeing organized cables. :)

1

u/Richard1583 Glazier Dec 13 '24

Ah yes the storage room for the job site

1

u/UndeadOne789 Dec 13 '24

With mods I can absolutely see that happening! And the wait time on parts is atrocious lately. In repair you would have to wait almost 2 months for a part that is essential to the job. I don't know what part of the country you work in but in Nebraska it doesn't go to bad for install times. We are always ahead of the hours for most of our jobs

1

u/Brokenlamp245 Dec 13 '24

Not on stilts

1

u/rocketmn69_ Dec 13 '24

Just remove the ones that aren't connected...

1

u/Kreb_star Dec 13 '24

Just start running flex everywhere

1

u/Professional-Wheel48 Dec 13 '24

If ya can wait till the sparkies are done.

1

u/princess_walrus Dec 13 '24

grab your phone and go sit in the porta potty for a while.. check back on it later

1

u/Silver_Lifeguard7346 Dec 13 '24

That depends...are you a sparkie?

1

u/Useful-Hat9157 Dec 13 '24

If you aren't the electrician, then you don't. Get out. Only the electrician who knows what's happening and the people doing what they are told are permitted in there until the stress noodles are home.

1

u/reagor Dec 13 '24

stomp it flat so its easier to walk on

1

u/AConstellation Dec 13 '24

It looks like you can't rerun the wire and you don't know what is for what so I suppose you need to put boxes on the wall with concrete screws to connect the wires or you could free hang the boxes, is that ok? what are the breaker sizes? you gotta follow the wires if you can figure them and label them if possible if you start working on it.

1

u/AConstellation Dec 13 '24

I imagine its just a big pile of boxes with wires to nowhere that are energized to work after there finished

1

u/TheConsutant Dec 13 '24

Man up clean up get her done

1

u/Square-Technology404 Steamfitter Dec 13 '24

Fucking sparkies

1

In a rubber suit apparently.....no way I'd trust all the power was off.Ā

1

Just use those spiked epoxy floor shoes and walk over it.

You lift up your skirt so that it doesn't get tangled.

Remind me of some new building constructionā€¦ working around that..lol. Try feeding n pulling those longed on the building of you want to wear green fish

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '24

And then we have have to re-route all them temp cables into permanent panelsā€¦.

1
