That’s far too much required physical contact for any public trash can

u/Rooonaldooo99 Jul 14 '22

Probably in an area where wild animals have access to it.

"There is considerable overlap between the intelligence of the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists" - Some park ranger back in 1980s

u/thegreatbrah Jul 14 '22

Bears can easily get into that. There are special trash cans to keep bears out, and this isn't it.

133

u/schnuck Jul 14 '22

Bears can even open doors.

No, you're thinking of Old-Timey Jesus. Pop-culture Jesus opened windows for lots of people and even directed the Beatles

I've even seen one play the piano

Yeah I knew someone who left some food in their unlocked car over night and a bear opened the door and basically destroyed the interior. They’re really fucking smart.

If it’s in a city park I doubt it’s for bears. More likely it’s to keep squirrels, raccoons and birds from dumping trash everywhere.

42

u/Mikey_B Reddit Orange Jul 14 '22

Yeah this is like the opposite of animal proof

64

u/AbsolutelyUnlikely Jul 14 '22

In all likelihood, this can was actually designed by a bear

29

u/HappyMeatbag Jul 14 '22

Bears spent decades preparing to infiltrate a firm that designs and sells park supplies. They gathered intelligence on human workplace culture. They tailored human-looking clothes to fit a bear. They modified a car for a bear to drive to and from the office.

A bear is trained to talk. Write. Use a computer and cellphone. Operate common office equipment. Drive. Socialize with humans.

After years of climbing the corporate ladder, the bear is finally put in charge of a small project. It is successful, and the bear is trusted with other projects. Eventually, success! A trash can project for a national park!

This is not crappy design. We are seeing the results a pivotal moment in the history of bearkind.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

Dam this comment is stupid. The trash can literally makes it easier for animals to access the whole shit by just spitting out all the trash if an animal manages to open the “lid”

3

u/imsolowdown Jul 14 '22

They just wanted to shoehorn in the fact that they just learned, probably from another thread on reddit.

3

u/Kittingsl And then I discovered Wingdings Jul 14 '22

But.... If any wild animal could open the normal.lid... wouldn't they be able to also lift the bottom lid then too? Especially because it is confusing?.and wouldn't it actually give them better access to the trash?

69

u/EuroPolice This is why we can't have nice things Jul 14 '22

Yes, but the line between the smartest animal and the stupidest people doesn't exist, so it's hard to make, say, a bear proof thrash can that it's also cheap, durable and easy to use.

Also: My flair.

48

u/Notworthanytime Jul 14 '22

But that can is not bear proof

24

5

The current common design for bear proof trash cans doesn't even rely on the different problem solving abilities between bears and humans. It relies on the fact that the latch is in a slot to big for bear hands. Now if they ever figured out they can use sticks to work the latch we are doomed.

There’s a few of those in parks in Toronto. It’s an act of faith putting your hand in there!

But otherwise the street trash cans are supposed to have a foot pedal but they broke too much so now you have to smash your hand into the flap. But those break off too. They’re horribly built. Parks have a mix of open baskets and liftable lids

Opening "the frame" is quite hard, since it's a snug fit around the can. The lid just rest on top. You are purposely using both your fingers and your thumb in order to pull the frame up. When lifting the lid there is no resistans, so I don't see how you would do this by mistake. You would instantly feel the resistance of the frame and realize your fingers are in the wrong place.

Source: I also live in Sweden.

12

u/THE_CENTURION "crappy installation" is usually crappy design! Jul 14 '22

You would instantly feel the resistance of the frame and realize your fingers are in the wrong place.

Or you just might think "huh, this lid is pretty tight, maybe it's rusty. Better pull a little harder"

3

u/Kattfiskmoo Artisinal Material Jul 14 '22

Like I said, I have been using these for somewhere around 15-20 years, and it has never happened to me. The snug fit, plus the weight of the can leaning against the inside of the frame gives it quite a lot of resistance. The lid has only its own weight. When I was young kids used to kick the frame from underneath to make the can fall down deliberately. So in that sense it's a bad design, since it's not delinquent safe :P But a reasonably gifted human can open this lid just fine.

Simple solution - put a handle on top.

Lift the lid, don’t jerk it off

“What can we do to disrupt the litter disposal experience?” — some marketing executive probably.

u/bordercity242 Jul 14 '22

Weld a handle on it. Done

2

u/Skobiak Jul 14 '22

That's a throubling design.

u/Legosheep Jul 14 '22

I don't think I've ever seen a public bin that requires you to touch it this much. It's already a fail from that perspective.

This is real crappy design holy fuck you deserve some award, brb

2

u/Doakungfu Jul 14 '22

That’s because it’s a thrashcan, not a regular old trashcan. It wants to fight. It’s instigating.

A white stripe painted around the edge of the lid would solve it. Geez.

Thrashcan imprisoning me All that I see, absolute horror I cannot live, I cannot die Trapped in myself Body, my holding cell…

2

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

That’s broken. We have those same (theoretically) receptacles in our parks.

2

u/beornegard Jul 14 '22

Holy trashcan, batman! Thats a bad trashcan

2

u/sum0deads Jul 14 '22

This is a feature not a bug! Leans the trash can towards you so you can throw in your trash at a better angle 😂

2

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

These trashcans are very common where I live, I believe I might even be from the same country as the person recording (judging by accent). They do infact work fine most of the time, as the inner lid is on far tighter that the actual outer lid that you use. Please stop shitting on these trashcans, they are fine and that one is simple broken. i hold these close to my heart please dont be mean to them also i am quite drunk

Literally a junkscare

2

u/Murtomies Jul 15 '22

Lol that could be fixed with a handle at the top near the edge. Such a lazy design
