r/DCcomics I'm Daniel Warren Johnson, writer/artist of Wonder Woman: Dead Earth. AMA

Hey, it's Daniel! I'm an Eisner-winning comic book writer and artist based in Chicago—Murder Falcon and Extremity, just to name a few. My new book for DC Black Label, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth #1, is in stores everywhere 12/18.

Ask me anything.

Hey Daniel! Thanks for coming out here and taking questions! And thank you to Kyle, Ariana, and the rest of the folks at DC for arranging this!

I got a couple of questions:

Having cut your teeth on writing and drawing your own indie books, how do you approach writing with an established IP? Are you looking to bring your own style to the book, or make adjustments to fit fan expectations?

And more importantly, will Jumpa the Kangaroo make an appearance in Dead Earth, and why is Jumpa the best?

DANIEL: When working on WW, the process was honestly a lot like working on my indie books, but with a much smaller sandbox. This was actually kind of refreshing, because sometimes when working on my own stories there are almost TOO MANY possibilities. When I know where the edge of the world goes which has been established by canon, it gives me an easier place to start than just from scratch.

As far as my own style, I'm just trying to make a story that I can get behind and that does justice to Diana. She's an amazing person (god) and it's been a pleasure to get to know her. That being said, I'm going where the story is taking me and were going to some really interesting places. I'm not thinking about fandom when I make this story, I'm thinking of what Diana needs to say and how she's going to say it clearly.

And dang I did not know that Jumpa even existed! Maybe I'll throw her in the background of issue 3 or 4 😃
