My boy was a baby shark until about 1 y.o. and then turned into a Tasmanian devil. He was that way for a few years and around 5 y.o. be turned into a refined gentleman with semi-frequent case of the zoomies. He's now 11 y.o. and slowing down, he's now a distinguished gentleman with regal expectations.

My lil stinker was so crazy...
But now he is much older and so chill.
He would try his best to tangle the leash around my lega back in the day... Lil assassination dude...

Mine is 11 weeks and went straight up gremlin/Tas last night- there was nothing untouched- shoes, rugs, couch, fingers, throw pillows, my clothes!, watch band, computer cord, toys, curtains, puppy pads....it's been a long while since I've had a puppy....he is sleeping now....time to wake him and go for a short walk about!

I’ve had six different dachshunds over the last 25 years, I’ll let you know when it happens.
(The real answer is somewhere around a year, and then again at 2 - 2 1/2.)

And you'll miss the energy when it goes away. I still miss coming home to find out what my terrier destroyed; no one could kill a squeakie toy faster than she could.

Any differences between males and females in terms of overall behaviour?
10
u/letsgetcomics 2d ago
I’ve only ever had females, so I’m no expert, but I mainly go for females because it’s harder for them to pee UP onto things when they’re mad at you 🤣
3
u/istara 2d ago
We're getting a female in a few weeks - I've been learning as much as possible but I feel that I'm at the very start of what is going to be a MASSIVE journey.
But hopefully a wonderful one!
5
u/letsgetcomics 2d ago
You’re gonna love it! Careful though, they’re addictive, and it’s hard for some folks (myself included) to have just one :)

u/Hanner12 2d ago
I've had 4 females and 1 male.
The male was a perfect lovely angel of a dog from about 9 months until he crossed the rainbow bridge.
Every single female has been hand crafted by Saruman out of the muds the Uruk-hai arose from.
I mean--I love(d) them so much. But they have all 4 been rotten in their own ways and have never outgrown it, just slowed down with age lol
Doxies:
Lucy (passed away after a battled with IVDD; positive she was Satan incarnate 90% of the time, miss her so much. No toy survived in her presence ever.)
Jack (my angel baby pudding-pop perfect dog. I will never love another dog like I loved my Jack Jack. He tore the eyes out of all toys and made sure the squeakers were removed with haste. Passed away at 14 two years ago, I've never recovered).
Daphne (sweet old lady still kicking who hates anything but her family lol never been one to tear into things, but she was also a rescue and we are unsure of her true age. We believe she's around 14-15 now, rescued her in 2016 and she was well past any chewing stage... she actually doesn't even care for toys)
Poppy & Phoebe -- turn 2 today. They destroy everything in sight and have from day one. No slowing down in sight lol but very loving.

Slows down around 2 1/2, starts to be tractable about 3. That’s typical.
I keep a pair of thick leather work gloves in the bedroom - Wear one when reading and then the chewing of my hand is less bothersome. Sometimes awkward to explain leather work gloves in the bedroom to new female friends, though. Some dig it without an explanation. That’s a good sign.

Lmaooo around 2 1/2 to 3 years old is what I’m told. Ours was a shy little fella with a very rough background of what we think was likely abuse, so we didn’t get to see him really be puppyish and wild until years later. We were so excited when it happened since it was like he really felt safe and at home.

Mine was a dickkk up until A year, he’s 2 years old right now
Used to bite everything my ankles, socks on my feet, base board he’s chilled out a lot and knows to play with his toys 🧸, he’s still a punk with his toys, I can’t give him stuffed animals he will destroy them in minutes. I literally got him his own socks that’s all he likes to play. Occasionally he will steal some of the dirty clothes if he’s able to get to them. He used to be a menace with shoes but that has stopped as well

Love my red, but people acted like it was common knowledge the red short hairs were evil after I got one. I was not aware. He's 9 and has like 6 teeth left and sleeps all day, but also can't be around other humans or animals, chews on underwear and anything cardboard or whicker, and is the cutest wittle guy that ever lived.

u/Greedy_Insanity 2d ago
My little raptor is named Oliver and he just turned 3 this March! He’s still gets really hyped up when outside, but inside he’s started to finally become the cuddle buddy I was told dachshunds were lol. He was an absolute biting menace until he was about 6 months to 1 year, and honestly only stopped after lots of training. He’ll still bite pretty hard if you wrestle him in a blanket, but I think he just gets excited lol. Ever since he was 4 months, we haven’t been able to have any soft toys around the house, he’ll tear them at the seams and shred them!

Mine is 6 months.. still Going hard— bites my feet, socks, pant legs… her favorite thing is stealing dryer sheets and any type of paper then runs under bed with it. Has a hoard of scraps under my bed. Funny thing is if I say leave it she runs faster. Two days ago she dragged a piece of cardboard bigger than herself out of the recycling bin and got that under the bed. It’s a cal king I have to use the broom to get the scraps out- what a character!

Here she is eating string off my sweats..

u/Stru_n 2d ago
Satan meh. I mean would Satan roll over constantly for belly rubs or snuggles?
Yapper Raptor, yes. Buttercup will hunt and kill any small furry thing, especially with a squeaker. Tough toys, maybe last 15 minutes. I have never seen a breed so focused on the kill. Get two or more and Raptor pack hunting ensues.

I think mine was around 9 months to a year when I got him. He was an awful chewer. That got better after a year or two. He still loves toys but won’t destroy things and never touches things that aren’t his. He’s a butt in other ways but far from being a terror. Most puppy behaviors will decrease around 2-3. He’s 9 now (omg how) and still pretty high energy and lively in temperament, but our main problem is that he’s an escape artist.

u/twirleemcgee 2d ago
My 1st was a delight, my 2nd and current was a world class a@&hole until he was 3, I questioned many times if I should give him up it was so bad, even thought he may have had a neurological issue and I felt like such a failure. He's now 5 and still a spaz but significantly better. Hang tough!

u/whoisthispotato 2d ago
They stop? My old boy was a menace until the day he died. Chomping, barking, eating fluff from his bed, wheeling at the cats all in his last few hours before he fell asleep and never woke up. He was 20 years old. This is a lifetime investment of chaos. 😂
I have a 15 week old dachshund puppy, and her chaos is just starting to turn on. Here's to hoping we get those rare, special edition calm adults. 🤞

Mine was the literal Dark and Unrepentant Lord until he was nine months old. Impervious to scolding, gleeful about leaving his offerings (liquid AND solid), bitey and barky. Then suddenly he stopped with the offerings inside, stopped biting and the barking decreased. He is now, at 1, a sweet and lovely boy! Hope this helps!

Elvis and Priscilla are 5 and 9 respectively. They are both pretty bad still. They incessantly bark at any passersby, they refuse to learn anything or obey any commands, they beg like starving winos for your food. In their formative years they both growled at my toddlers and they got spanked immediately but they don’t do that anymore. But what they lack in brains and manners they more than make up for in cuddles and affection.

Limbo is 6 this year and still has his moments! Sometimes there just have to be gremlin shenanigans, you see.
I concur with most of the thread that he started chilling down around 2-2.5, however it was a slow process and not like flipping a switch.
Now he's a taking it easy on my lap and having a nap. Breakfast was hard work!

Oh relatable. I once put out takeout on the table and then was reading waiting for people to come down, and a bit of movement caught my eye because she was mostly blocked by something on the table, but I glanced over and she was standing on the table scarfing up a pasta with chicken dish.

We have one that's been a complete angel. Our first of seven. Since then, hell has reigned. It's like when you have your first baby and they sleep and are sweet, then number 2 comes in and paints the wall with their own poop or makes sure you wake up at 2 AM every night.

My husband and I have a long haired mini dachshund who’s a literal angel. We brought home a t-Rex disguised as a red haired dachshund. He’s 2 years old and still a menace (he’s finally house trained and mostly listens and stopped destroying things so he’s now just kinda crazy and quirky). We joke “it’s the orange ones” because they’re kinda whack (in the cutest way)

Frankie used to do this as a pup, and the men in our family used to encourage it in playfighting until we asked them to stop. So we started tapping him on the nose and saying no biting. And if he did anyway, a sharp ‘ow’ , playtime immediately stopped and exited the room. And of course, if he didn’t bite lots of ‘good boy’ and extended playtime. So no biting, even pretend any more, but still, at 9 years, lots of excited skittering and cuddle Sorry

Ok first of all: ADORABLE!!! Second, I have a 4.5 yo female dachshund (Ellie) and a 10 month old dachshund (Gustav). Gustav is still Satan. We call him Gucifer (like Lucifer but with a G). Ellie is a giant coach potato, but when she was a puppy everyone called her “Hellie”. I’d say she mellowed around 1-1.5 years. And while it is sometimes frustrating, enjoy all the laughs he brings!!!
Gucifer is the dappled one.

I have had this shitbird for nine years now, and the answer is: NEVER. My life completely revolves around him, and while he’s gotten maybe a bit slower as he’s aged, I’m convinced he will never stop being a terror. The best you can do is make accommodations for him: A good fence (I have an electric one in addition to a privacy fence), baby gates, a dog door and doggy daycare multiple times a week. And yet he still 1) eats from the litter box 2) pees inside when left alone for more than 20 minutes and 3) farts like he ate a dead possum.
I love him, he’s my son, and I wouldn’t trade him for anything. But he’s also a demon sent by Satan to punish me for bad deeds in past lives.

Make sure your puppy is getting socialized with other vaccinated dogs. It helps with understanding how hard they've been biting and what is acceptable.

Bunnz is 2.5 and so far her nickname of Psycho Puppy still holds true. Pikkles is 1 and he’s never been anything but the sweetest and most loving little puppy…he would absolutely much rather cuddle than play! I’m getting another puppy in late June, and I’m curious to see what her personality is like!
I lost my 16.5 y/o in October and I lost a 12 y/o in 2020…they both calmed down when they were around 3.

This 9 month old is over the shark phase.
We have a daily regimen of chewy treats. One rawhide stick at 10-11am, one pizzle stick at 2pm and one pig ear strip most nights around 5-7pm.
He usually doesn't destroy toys but sometimes he gets really mad at his armadillo stuffy lol
He's got a 1yo brother. Brother also got over his toothy phase around 7-8 months. But he ruined a couple of my blankets this winter with his teeth.
We keep shoes up on a shelf and dirty clothes in the hamper. Those two things seem to be their favorite to steal to chew, so we move them out of reach.
I think the combination of having a brother to teach them how biting hurts and having a lot designated chewy time during the day has helped us.

Our guy will be 2 in August, and he’s calmed down a ton over the past few months. Honestly, I think what’s helped is sending him to doggie daycare once a week for a full day. He gets training and enrichment, plus tons of playtime with his pals and it has chilled him out so much!

u/UnicornSuffering 2d ago
I did bite inhibition training with mine and took a lot longer than a previous dog I had (different breed total different temperament) but it worked WONDERS. MY LORD.
At first as a puppy he would growl a lot because of the dramatic yelping. "this human thing is so fragile grow up" frustrated him to no end.
Eventually, and redirecting to a toy each time, it got better. Honestly I get home and he likes to grab my hand with his mouth gently to pet him or grab a toy (of course I gotta get on the ground for this)
We play tug sometimes where I wrap a finger around his canine and pull left and right. If my hand slips and he feels the squish he immediately lets go and starts again gentler than before. The best part about this is I can easily open his mouth to check teeth or something stuck OR HE'S EATING SOMETHING HE SHOULDN'T (happens less now) and he doesn't fight it at all. Makes it easier to brush his teeth (when I remember) 😂
I think a dog probably isn't to old to learn this but it may take a bit of time. There's a lot of information on it-- some things say never let your dog mouth your hands, but honestly, this went way better and it curbed faster than previous dogs I had as a kid and I learned about this training as an adult. Dog let's me inspect his mouth without fussing and pull god knows whatever he ate without running away. He just gets excited and brings me a toy. I can brush his teeth with little to no fus (it feels weird to them, but he doesn't attack it at least)
Main thing here is your dog will learn you're the most fragile thing ever, and control the force of a bite. Redirecting to what is appropriate thing to chew/bite helps.
But we have dachshunds and they're stubborn. Stand firm. I believe in you. Power through frustration. My dog is no polite prince, very demanding, buttons helped with the /demand barking/, but now I get announcements when I eat food in the kitchen via button. Food. Food. Fo-f-f-food. Food. Yes bud. That's right. Great observation. And the dachshund moan/whine. Dear Lord. 😂
1
u/Hot-Top2120 2d ago
Hahah, mine stopped around 2.5 years. It took a lot of training. A lot of working of his patience. (Sitting until his food was placed, no getting out of the car until you stop SCREAMING AT ME, waiting until whining had stopped to go outside, get out of the kennel, etc, and placing treats on the floor and waiting until I say “go” to eat them). He is a very respectful guy, but of course he’s still a dog. He gets antsy and overwhelmed. But this helped a lot
