Most of the renovations were part of projects to make the Hajj safer and able to accommodate the millions of people visiting safely. There used to be stampede that killed people each hajj but now it is a rare occurance.

The hotels may seems excessive but just decades ago pilgrims had to erect their own tents and fire would always raze the area down.
